Semi-Analytical Simulation of Titanium-Indiffused Lithium Niobate–Integrated Optic Directional Couplers Consisting of Curved Waveguides

Integrated optic directional couplers consisting of curved waveguides are simulated analytically by solving the Riccati equation. The coupling coefficient between the curved waveguides with a parabolically varying gap and the condition of total power transfer between the waveguides are derived. In order to compute the overall coupling coefficient and hence the power distribution along the waveguides for Ti:LiNbO ₃ curved waveguide directional couplers, the coupling coefficient for straight waveguide couplers is computed for different gaps using the effective-index-based matrix method (EIMM). Finally, the power distribution in the curved waveguides along the length is computed. The method is mostly analytical except the effective-index method and is computationally simple.     

Effect of V cut in perforated twisted tape insert on heat transfer and fluid flow behavior of tube flow: An experimental study

ABSTRACT

Present study investigates the heat transfer and friction characteristics of heat exchanger tube fitted with perforated twisted tape (PTT) insert having V cuts. A copper tube of 1 m length and 0.032 m inner diameter is used as test section to collect the experimental data by varying the twist ratio of PTT from 2 to 6 for the Reynolds number range of 2,700–23,400. V cuts are introduced in the PTT and the V-cut relative pitch ratio is varied from 1 to 2. The maximum thermo-hydraulic performance parameter is found to be 1.58.     

Optical properties of polyvinyl alcohol doped (Se80Te20)100–xAgx (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) composites

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) doped (Se₈₀Te₂₀)_100–xAg_x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) thin films were prepared by the spin-coating technique on a quartz substrate. The optical parameters of PVA-doped (Se₈₀Te₂₀)_100–xAg_x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) composites at the same chalcogen concentration (S₀ = 0.1 mg ml^?1) and PVA/(Se₈₀Te₂₀)₉₆Ag₄ composites at three different chalcogen concentrations viz. S₁ = 0.3 mg ml^?1, S₂ = 0.6 mg ml^?1 and S₃ = 1 mg ml^?1 have been studied. The semi-crystalline nature of the as-deposited thin filmsisdetermined by X-ray diffraction. The transmission and reflection spectra of PVA-doped Se–Te–Ag thin films were obtained in a 350–650 nm spectral region. The optical-band gap has been calculated from the transmission and reflection data. The refractive index has been calculated by the measured reflection data. It has been found that the optical-band gap increases, but the refractive index, extinction coefficient, and the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant decrease, with increase in Agcontent in PVA-doped (Se₈₀Te₂₀)_100–xAg_x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) thin films. Such type of behavior is explained on the basis of decrease in density of the defect states. However, the optical-band gap has been found to be decreased and all other optical parameters show increase in their values with increase in concentration of (Se₈₀Te₂₀)₉₆Ag₄ glass in PVA-doped composites. The results have been explained on the basis of cluster-size formation at the time of dissolution. This study shows that the optical properties of new composites are affected by the change in silver and chalcogen concentration.     

Buckling of laminated plates - A simple finite element based on higher-order theory

A four-noded rectangular element with seven degrees of freedom at each node is developed for buckling analysis of laminated plate structures having any number of layers with a constant thickness of individual layers. The displacement model is so chosen that it can explain adequately the parabolic distribution of transverse shear stresses and the non-linearity of in-plane displacements across the thickness. A geometrical stiffness matrix is developed using in-plane stresses. A wide range of plates from thick to thin are examined under uniaxial loading conditions. The results are compared with the existing analytical and numerical solutions. The present formulations confirm its applicability for buckling analysis of a wide range of plates.     

Aligned magnetic effects through varying permeable bed

The aligned magnetic effects on a steady laminar, viscous, incompressible, conducting fluid down an open inclined channel bounded below by a bed of varying permeability has been studied when the free surface is exposed to atmospheric pressure. Beavers and Joseph slip condition at the interface of the free flow region and the fluid flow in the porous bed and the Darcy’s law in the porous medium have been used. The expressions for velocity, magnetic strength and the mass flow across the cross-section of the channel are obtained.     

Non-linear axisymmetric vibration of orthotropic thin circular plates on elastic foundations

This study deals with the large amplitude axisymmetric free vibrations of cylindrically orthotropic thin circular plates resting on elastic foundations. Geometric non-linearity due to moderately large deflections has been included. Movable and immovable simply supported plates and immovable clamped plates resting on Winkler, Pasternak and non-linear Winkler foundations have been considered. The von Kármán type governing equations have been employed. Harmonic vibrations are assumed and the time t is eliminated by the Kantorovich averaging method. An orthogonal point collocation method is used for spatial discretization. Numerical results are presented for the linear natural frequency of the first axisymmetric mode and for the ratio of the non-linear period to the linear period of natural vibration. The effects of foundation parameters, the orthotropic parameter and the edge conditions on the non-linear vibration behaviour have been investigated.     

Thermodynamics of textures in superfluid 3He

The contribution of the textures in the B-phase of superfluid ³He to the specific heat has been calculated. The specific heat is found to be divergent near T_c.     

Evaluation of one-centre electron interaction integrals over slater type atomic orbitals

Simplified expressions for one-centre electron interaction integrals in general and Slater-Condon parameters as well as repulsion integrals of the type (aa|aa) in particular have been obtained over Slater-type atomic orbitals. Results calculated using these expressions are in agreement with those due to other authors.     

Hyperfine magnetic fields at sp-sites in Co2YZ Heusler alloys

The systematics of hyperfine magnetic fields at sp impurities on the Z-sites in Co based Heusler alloys are investigated. New TDPAC measurements of Cd hyperfine fields are reported.
