Synthesis, characterization, structures and cytotoxic activity of palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes containing bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine and saccharinate

New palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes containing bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (bpma) and saccharinate (sac), [Pd(bpma)(sac)](sac)·2H₂O (1), [Pt(bpma)(sac)](sac)·2H₂O (2), [Pd(bpma)Cl](sac)·2H₂O (3) and [Pt(bpma)(sac)]Cl·1.5H₂O (4), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR and TG-DTA. A single-crystal X-ray analysis of 3 and 4 proved a distorted square-planar geometry around the metal ions with one tridentate bpma ligand and one Cl or sac monoanion. The [Pd(bpma)Cl]⁺ ions in 3 form dimers by intermolecular N-H?Cl and Pd?Pd interactions. The cations reside in the centers of a hydrogen-bonded honeycomb network formed by the uncoordinated sac ions and the lattice water molecules, while the cations of 4 are connected by N-H?Cl and OW-H?O hydrogen bonds into one-dimensional chains. Cyclic planar tetrameric and trimeric water clusters were observed in 3 and 4, respectively. Cytotoxicity of 1-4 was tested against A549, C6 and CHO cells. Although 2 and 4 have no cytotoxicity, the best results were achieved for 1 and 3. In particular, the cyctotoxic activity of 3 is comparable to cisplatin.     

Drying characteristics of garlic (Allium sativum L) slices in a convective hot air dryer

The effects of drying temperatures on the drying kinetics of garlic slices were investigated using a cabinet-type dryer. The experimental drying data were fitted best to the Page and Modified Page models apart from other theoretical models to predict the drying kinetics. The effective moisture diffusivities varied from 4.214 × 10^?10 to 2.221 × 10^?10 m² s^?1 over the temperature range studied, and activation energy was 30.582 kJ mol^?1.     

Levels of cesium radionuclides in lichens and mosses from the province of Ordu in the Eastern Black Sea area of Turkey

Chemobyl nuclear power plant accident in Ukraine in April 26, 1986 has affected Scandinavia and European countries, the Balkans and the northside of Turkey. Radioactive clouds depending on meteorological conditions had contaminated soil surface and flora in the region of Thrace and the seaside of the Black sea. This study has been done on mosses and lichens in which radioactive isotopes can live for a long time. These specimens have been collected in various regions of Ordu located in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. On the basis of the results of this study the geographic distribution of pollution on the flora has been done.

19F Dynamic Nuclear Polarization and SEM in Suspensions Consisting of Fluorobenzene Derivatives and Asphaltene Extracted from MC-800 Liquid Asphalt

A variety of analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy and ¹⁹F dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) methods, are applied to characterize asphaltene extracted from MC-800 liquid asphalt in fluorobenzene derivatives at 1.53 mT and at room temperature. Different solvents show variable affinities for the asphaltene surface. The low field EPR spectrum of the asphaltene/hexafluorobenzene sample was recorded. The DNP parameters were determined. Additionally, the interactions between the nuclei of the solvent and the electrons delocalized on the asphaltene are interpreted. Not only dipolar but also scalar interactions between the nuclear spin and the electron spin were found.     

Asymmetric epoxidation of enones using cumyl hydroperoxide and in situ generated zinc complexes of chiral pyrrolidinyl alcohols

The homogeneous asymmetric epoxidation of a range of enones was carried out using cumyl hydroperoxide, diethylzinc, and chiral pyrrolidinyl alcohol-containing ligands to afford the corresponding epoxy ketones with enantioselectivities of ≤97% ee. Examination of the enantioselectivities obtained in the asymmetric epoxidation of enones using a range of chiral ligands indicated that synergy between the sterically bulky bicyclo[2.2.2]octane skeleton and the substituents attached to the carbinol moiety played an important role in determining the reaction enantioselectivity. The position and nature of the substituent on the aromatic ring of the enone also had a pronounced effect on the observed enantioselectivity.     

Electronic and interface state density distribution properties of Ag/p-Si Schottky diode

Electronic and interface state distribution properties of Ag/p-Si Schottky diode have been investigated. The diode indicates non-ideal current-voltage behavior with an ideality factor greater than unity. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristic is linear in reverse bias indicating rectification behavior and charge density within depletion layer is uniform. From I-V and C-V characteristics, junction parameters such as diode ideality factor and barrier height were found as 1.66 and ?_B(I-V) = 0.84 eV (?_B(C-V) = 0.90 eV), respectively. The interface state density N_ss and relaxation time τ of the Schottky diode were determined by means of Schottky capacitance spectroscopy method. The results show the presence of thin interfacial layer between the metal and semiconductor.     

Design and characterization of Bodipy derivatives for bulk heterojunction solar cells

Two electron rich Bodipy dyes with strong absorptivities in the visible region were designed and synthesized as potential electron donors in bulk heterojunction photovoltaic constructs. Overall efficiency is above 1%, with impressive responsiveness at both UV and near-IR ends of the visible spectrum. Computational studies reveal an unexpected effect of meso-substituents on the electron transfer efficiency.
