QR‐SCMEH‐MO calculations on the complex [Pt (SnCl3)5]3−: Electronic structure,UV–visible spectrum,magnetic properties,and bond energy

A molecular orbital study via the QR‐SCMEH‐MO (quasi‐relativistic self consistent modified extended H?ckel molecular orbital) method has been carried out on the unusual Pt 5‐ coordinated complex Pt (SnCl₃). The computed UV–Visible spectral data and NMR parameters are found to be in good agreement with the reported experimental values. In addition, the magnetic susceptibility and Pt? Sn bond energy have been calculated, although there are no reported experimental data with which to compare these results. Pt? Sn bond energies of other Pt‐SnX₃ (X = Cl, Br) systems and are compared with proposed bond energy trends based on NMR and observed bond distances. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Quantitative UV-Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy of Solid Powders

In spite of difficulties in attaining high resolution, the determination of UV-VIS-NIR spectra via diffuse reflectance spectro-scopic measurements on solid powders; provides several advantages. Compounds which are difficult to obtain as suitable single crystals, or are found to be unstable or insoluble in liquid solution, can only be studied by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Also, since no solvents are required, any effects due to solvation are eliminated. However, it is not possible to resolve the observed spectrum into its anisotropic components, as in the case of single crystal spectra.     

Full-field imaging-based instantaneous hyperspectral absolute refractive index measurement

Multispectral refractometers typically measure refractive index (RI) at discrete monochromatic wavelengths via a serial process. We report on the demonstration of a white light full-field imaging-based refractometer capable of instantaneous multispectral measurement of absolute RI of clear liquid-gel samples across the entire visible light spectrum. The broad optical bandwidth refractometer is capable of hyperspectral measurement of RI in the range 1.30-1.70 between 400 and 700 nm with a maximum error of 0.0036 units (0.24% of actual) at 414 nm for an η=1.50 sample. We present system design and calibration method details as well as results from a system validation sample.

Elastic properties of the Ta–V system: bcc Ta0.33V0.67 and C15 TaV2

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy was used to measure the elastic constants of bcc Ta_0.33V_0.67 over the temperature range 3.5–300?K; the results were compared to earlier measurements on C15 TaV₂. The temperature dependence of the polycrystalline shear modulus is completely different in the two phases; that of the bcc phase decreases with temperature whereas that of the C15 phases increases in an anomalous fashion. This difference is consistent with a model involving doubly-degenerate levels at the X point of the Brillouin zone in the C15 phase with the Fermi level lying near the doubly degenerate level. This model accounted for the unusual behaviour of the C15 phase. Debye temperatures were determined from the ultrasonic measurements: 295?K for the C15 phase and 315?K for the bcc phase.     

Irradiation of a cone by a magnetic dipole

Th electromagnetic field produced by a magnetic dipole in thepresence of a perfectly conducting cone of arbitrary cross-sectionis determined. The solution is used to find out how a currenton the cone travelling towards the apex is reflected. Some valuesof the reflection coefficient are calculated. In particular,it is shown that there is a sort of resonance with the reflectionincreasing significantly as the cone approaches a plane.     

Structural studies and T c dependence in La2−x Dy x Ca y Ba2Cu4+y O z type mixed oxide superconductors

A new series of mixed oxide superconductors with the stoichiometric composition La_2−x Dy _x Ca _y Ba₂Cu_4+y O _z (x=0.0 − 0.5, y=2x) has been studied for structural and superconductiong properties. Our earlier studies on La_2−x (Y/Er) _x Ca _y Ba₂Cu_4+y O _z series, show a strong dependence of T _c on hole concentration (p _sh). In the present work, the results of the analysis of the neutron diffraction measurements at room temprerature on x=0.3 and 0.5 samples are reported. It is interesting to know that Ca substitutes for both La and Ba site with concomitant displacement of La onto Ba site. Superconductivity studies show that maximum T _c is obtained for x=0.5, y=1.0 sample (T _c ∼ 75 K), for La_1.5Dy_0.5Ca₁Ba₂Cu₅O _z (La-2125).
