UVB exposure of skin results in various biologic responses either through direct or indirect damage to DNA and non-DNA cellular targets via the formation of free radicals, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammation. Bucillamine [N-(2-mercapto-2-methylpropionyl)-l-cysteine] is a cysteine-derived compound that can replenish endogenous glutathione due to its two donatable thiol groups, and functions as an antioxidant. In this study, we investigated the effects of bucillamine on UVB-induced photodamage using the SKH-1 hairless mouse model. We have demonstrated that UVB exposure (two consecutive doses, 230 mJ cm(-2)) on the dorsal skin of SKH-1 mice induced inflammatory responses (edema, erythema, dermal infiltration of leukocytes, dilated blood vessels) and p53 activation as early as 6 h after the last UVB exposure. Bucillamine pretreatment (20 mg kg(-1) of body weight, administered subcutaneously) markedly attenuated UVB-mediated inflammatory responses and p53 activation. We have also demonstrated that the stabilization and upregulation of p53 by UVB correlated with phosphorylation of Ser-15 and Ser-20 residues of p53 protein and that bucillamine pretreatment attenuated this effect. We propose that bucillamine has potential to be effective as a photoprotective agent for the management of pathologic conditions elicited by UV exposure. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of monoliths composed of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) to which N-methacryloyl-(L)-cysteine methyl ester (MAC) was polymerized for removal of heavy metal ions. Poly(HEMA-MAC) monolith was produced by bulk polymerization. Poly(HEMA-MAC) monolith was characterized by FTIR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The poly(HEMA-MAC) monolith with a swelling ratio of 89%, and containing 69.4 μmol MAC/g were used in the adsorption studies. Adsorption capacity of the monolith for the metal ions, i.e., Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ were investigated in aqueous media containing different amounts of the ions (10–750 mg/L) and at different pH values (3.0–7.0). The maximum adsorption capacities of the poly(HEMA-MAC) monolith were 68.2 mg/g for Zn2+, 129.2 mg/g for Cu2+, 245.8 mg/g for Pb2+, 270.2 mg/g for Hg2+, and 284.0 mg/g for Cd2+. pH significantly affected the adsorption capacity of MAC incorporated monolith. The competitive adsorption capacities were 587 μmol/g for Zn2+, 1646 μmol/g for Cu2+, 687 μmol/g for Pb2+, 929 μmol/g for Hg2+, and 1993 μmol/g for Cd2+. The chelating monolith exhibited the following metal ion affinity sequence on molar basis: Cd2+ > Cu2+ > Hg2+ > Pb2+ > Zn2+. The formation constants of MAC–metal ion complexes have been investigated applying the method of Ruzic. The calculated values of stability constants were 5.28 × 104 L/mol for Cd2+, 4.16 × 104 L/mol for Cu2+, 2.27 × 104 L/mol for Hg2+, 1.98 × 104 L/mol for Pb2+, and 1.25 × 104 L/mol for Zn2+. Stability constants were increased with increasing binding affinity. The chelating monoliths can be easily regenerated by 0.1 M HNO3 with higher effectiveness. Poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) nanoparticles with an average size of 150 nm in diameter and with a poly-dispersity index of 1.171 were produced by a surfactant free emulsion polymerization. Specific surface area of the PHEMA nanoparticles was found to be 1779 m(2)/g. Reactive imidazole containing 3-(2-imidazoline-1-yl)propyl(triethoxysilane) (IMEO) was used as a pseudo-specific ligand. IMEO was attached covalently onto the nanoparticles. PHEMA-IMEO nanoparticles were used for the affinity binding of immunoglobulin-G (IgG) from human plasma. To evaluate the degree of IMEO loading, the PHEMA nanoparticles were subjected to Si analysis by using flame atomizer atomic absorption spectrometer and it was estimated as 64.5 mg/g of polymer. The nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). IgG binding onto the PHEMA nanoparticles was found to be 5.2 mg/g. Much higher binding values (up to 843 mg/g) were obtained for the PHEMA-IMEO nanoparticles. IgG could be repeatedly bound and eluted on PHEMA-IMEO nanoparticles without noticeable loss in the IgG binding capacity. 相似文献

This study aimed at assessing the effect of gum arabic (Acacia senegal) oral treatment on the metabolic profile of chronic renal failure (CRF) patients. A total of 36 CRF patients (under regular haemodialysis) and 10 normal subjects participated in this study. The patients were randomly allocated into three groups-group A: 12 CRF patients under low-protein diet (LPD) (<40 g day(-1)) and gum arabic (50 g day(-1)) treatment; group B: 14 CRF patients under LPD and gum arabic, iron (ferrous sulphate, 200 mg day(-1)) and folic acid (5 mg day(-1)) treatment; group C (control group): 10 CRF patients under LPD and iron and folic acid treatment and group D: 10 normal volunteers (on normal diet) under daily dose of 50 g gum arabic. Each of the above treatments was continued for three consecutive months. Blood samples were collected from each subject before treatment and twice per month "pre-dialysis" for 3 months. Biochemical parameters measured were: serum urea, serum creatinine, serum uric acid, serum calcium and serum phosphorus. By the end of the 3 months of treatment, serum urea levels significantly decreased by 31.2 and 44.18% for group A and B, respectively, compared with the baseline (0.01 < p < 0.001) and control group (p < 0.05). Serum creatinine levels significantly decreased in the groups of gum users (A, B and D) by 9.94, 12.65 and 11.7%, respectively, compared with the control group (p < 0.001). There was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in serum uric acid levels by 14 and 19.9% for group A and B, respectively, compared with the baseline. Serum calcium levels increased by 12.64, 15.75 and 8.75% for group A, B and D, respectively, and these increases were significantly different (0.05 < p < 0.001) from baseline and control group for groups A and B. Serum phosphorus levels significantly decreased by 22.54% for group A, 17.69% for group B and 7.71% for group D, compared with the baseline (0.05 < p < 0.001). From this study, we conclude that oral administration of gum arabic could conceivably alleviate adverse effects of CRF. 相似文献

A nonconforming (Crouzeix–Raviart) finite element method with subgrid viscosity is analyzed to approximate advection‐diffusion‐reaction equations. The error estimates are quasi‐optimal in the sense that keeping the Péclet number fixed, the estimates are suboptimal of order in the mesh size for the L2‐norm and optimal for the advective derivative on quasi‐uniform meshes. The method is also reformulated as a finite volume box scheme providing a reconstruction formula for the diffusive flux with local conservation properties. Bees Algorithm is one of the swarm intelligence based heuristics which tries to model natural behaviour of honey bees in food foraging and used to solve optimization problems. On the other hand, Two-sided Assembly Line Balancing Problem is a generalization of simple Assembly Line Balancing Problem where different assembly tasks are carried out on the same product in parallel at both left and right sides of the line. Two-sided assembly lines are generally employed for the assembly of large-sized products such as buses and trucks. Furthermore, many real life problems contain imprecise objectives and Fuzzy Multi-objective Programming gives an opportunity to handle such situations. In this study, Two-sided Assembly Line Balancing Problem is considered more realistically by employing positional, zoning and synchronous task constraints and by utilizing fuzzy approaches so as to maximize work slackness index and line efficiency, and minimize total balance delay. We report on the first measurement of the F(2) structure function of the neutron from the semi-inclusive scattering of electrons from deuterium, with low-momentum protons detected in the backward hemisphere. Restricting the momentum of the spectator protons to ?100 MeV/c and their angles to ?100° relative to the momentum transfer allows an interpretation of the process in terms of scattering from nearly on-shell neutrons. The F(2)(n) data collected cover the nucleon-resonance and deep-inelastic regions over a wide range of Bjorken x for 0.65

Due to their unique layered microstructure, the presence of various functional groups at the surface, earth abundance, and attractive electrical, optical, and thermal properties, MXenes are considered promising candidates for the solution of energy- and environmental-related problems. It is seen that the energy conversion and storage capacity of MXenes can be enhanced by changing the material dimensions, chemical composition, structure, and surface chemistry. Hence, it is also essential to understand how one can easily improve the structure–property relationship from an applied point of view. In the current review, we reviewed the fabrication, properties, and potential applications of MXenes. In addition, various properties of MXenes such as structural, optical, electrical, thermal, chemical, and mechanical have been discussed. Furthermore, the potential applications of MXenes in the areas of photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, nitrogen fixation, gas sensing, cancer therapy, and supercapacitors have also been outlooked. Based on the reported works, it could easily be observed that the properties and applications of MXenes can be further enhanced by applying various modification and functionalization approaches. The present study investigated and compared the quality and chemical composition of Moroccan walnut (Juglans regia L.) oil. This study used three extraction techniques: cold pressing (CP), soxhlet extraction (SE), and ultrasonic extraction (UE). The findings showed that soxhlet extraction gave a significantly higher oil yield compared to the other techniques used in this work (65.10% with p < 0.05), while cold pressing and ultrasonic extraction gave similar yields: 54.51% and 56.66%, respectively (p > 0.05). Chemical composition analysis was carried out by GC–MS and allowed 11 compounds to be identified, of which the major compound was linoleic acid (C18:2), with a similar percentage (between 57.08% and 57.84%) for the three extractions (p > 0.05). Regarding the carotenoid pigment, the extraction technique significantly affected its content (p < 0.05) with values between 10.11 mg/kg and 14.83 mg/kg. The chlorophyll pigment presented a similar content in both oils extracted by SE and UE (p > 0.05), 0.20 mg/kg and 0.16 mg/kg, respectively, while the lowest content was recorded in the cold-pressed oil with 0.13 mg/kg. Moreover, the analysis of phytosterols in walnut oil revealed significantly different contents (p < 0.05) for the three extraction techniques (between 1168.55 mg/kg and 1306.03 mg/kg). In addition, the analyses of tocopherol composition revealed that γ-tocopherol represented the main tocopherol isomer in all studied oils and the CP technique provided the highest content of total tocopherol with 857.65 mg/kg, followed by SE and UE with contents of 454.97 mg/kg and 146.31 mg/kg, respectively, which were significantly different (p < 0.05). This study presents essential information for producers of nutritional oils and, in particular, walnut oil; this information helps to select the appropriate method to produce walnut oil with the targeted quality properties and chemical compositions for the desired purpose. It also helps to form a scientific basis for further research on this plant in order to provide a vision for the possibility of exploiting these oils in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food fields. 相似文献
