The Chemcatcher passive sampler, which uses Empore? disks as sampling phase, is frequently used to monitor polar organic chemicals in river water and effluents. Uptake kinetics need to be quantified to calculate time-weighted average concentrations from Chemcatcher field deployments. Information on release kinetics is needed if performance reference compounds (PRCs) are used to quantify the influence of environmental conditions on the uptake. In a series of uptake and elimination experiments, we used Empore? SDB disks (poly(styrenedivinylbenzene) copolymer modified with sulfonic acid groups) as a sampling phase and 22 compounds with a logK ow (octanol–water partitioning coefficient) range from ?2.6 to 3.8. Uptake experiments were conducted in river water or tap water and lasted up to 25 days. Only 1 of 22 compounds (sulfamethoxazole) approached equilibrium in the uptake trials. Other compounds showed continuing non-linear uptake, even after 25 days. All compounds could be released from SDB disks, and desorption was proportionally higher in disks loaded for shorter periods. Desorption showed two-phase characteristics, and desorption was proportionally higher for passively sorbed compounds compared to actively loaded compounds (active loading was performed by pulling spiked river water over SDB disks using vacuum). We hypothesise that the two-phase kinetics and better retention of actively loaded compounds—and compounds loaded for a longer period—may be caused by slow diffusion of chemicals within the polymer. As sorption and desorption did not show isotropic kinetics, it is not possible to develop robust PRCs for adsorbent material like SDB disks.  相似文献

The effect of montmorrilonite clay (MMT) platelets on the morphology of polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composite latex particles prepared via PMMA-seeded (semi-) batch emulsion polymerization of styrene was studied. It was found that the particle morphology obtained greatly depended on the ability of the clay platelets to diffuse through the polymer particle. Indeed, when the reactions were strictly under kinetic control, i.e., where the clay platelets were unable to diffuse during polymerization, anisotropic core-shell-like morphologies with split core were observed. A better mobility of the clay platelets could more or less restrict the diffusion of the second-stage polymers within the host polymer, leading to original kinetically controlled morphologies. In the case of a full migration of the clay platelets to the particle surface, the penetration of the second-stage polymer species in the seed latex was found to be more limited, enhancing the formation of secondary particles.  相似文献

Savings in analysis time in capillary GC have always been an important issue for chromatographers since the introduction of capillary columns by Golay in 1958. In laboratories where gas chromatographic techniques are routinely applied as an analytical technique, every reduction of analysis time, without significant loss of resolution, can be translated into a higher sample throughput and hence reduce the laboratory operating costs. In this contribution, three different approaches for obtaining fast GC separations are investigated. First, a narrow-bore column is used under conventional GC operating conditions. Secondly, the same narrow-bore column is used under typical fast GC conditions. Here, a high oven temperature programming rate is used. The third approach uses a recent new development in GC instrumentation: Flash-2D-GC. Here the column is placed inside a metal tube, which is resistively heated. With this system, a temperature programming rate of 100°/s is possible. The results obtained with each of these three approaches are compared with results obtained on a column with conventional dimensions. This comparison takes retention times as well as plate numbers and resolution into consideration.  相似文献

Because of its high sensitivity and specificity, hyphenated mass spectrometry has become the predominant method to detect and quantify metabolites present in bio-samples relevant for all sorts of life science studies being executed. In contrast to targeted methods that are dedicated to specific features, global profiling acquisition methods allow new unspecific metabolites to be analyzed. The challenge with these so-called untargeted methods is the proper and automated extraction and integration of features that could be of relevance. We propose a new algorithm that enables untargeted integration of samples that are measured with high resolution liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). In contrast to other approaches limited user interaction is needed allowing also less experienced users to integrate their data. The large amount of single features that are found within a sample is combined to a smaller list of, compound-related, grouped feature-sets representative for that sample. These feature-sets allow for easier interpretation and identification and as important, easier matching over samples. We show that the automatic obtained integration results for a set of known target metabolites match those generated with vendor software but that at least 10 times more feature-sets are extracted as well. We demonstrate our approach using high resolution LC–MS data acquired for 128 samples on a lipidomics platform. The data was also processed in a targeted manner (with a combination of automatic and manual integration) using vendor software for a set of 174 targets. As our untargeted extraction procedure is run per sample and per mass trace the implementation of it is scalable. Because of the generic approach, we envision that this data extraction lipids method will be used in a targeted as well as untargeted analysis of many different kinds of TOF-MS data, even CE- and GC–MS data or MRM. The Matlab package is available for download on request and efforts are directed toward a user-friendly Windows executable.  相似文献

A new generation of designer solvents emerged in the last decade as promising green media for multiple applications, including separation processes: the low‐transition‐temperature mixtures (LTTMs). They can be prepared by mixing natural high‐melting‐point starting materials, which form a liquid by hydrogen‐bond interactions. Among them, deep‐eutectic solvents (DESs) were presented as promising alternatives to conventional ionic liquids (ILs). Some limitations of ILs are overcome by LTTMs, which are cheap and easy to prepare from natural and readily available starting materials, biodegradable, and renewable.  相似文献

Biological membrane fusion is a highly specific and coordinated process as a multitude of vesicular fusion events proceed simultaneously in a complex environment with minimal off-target delivery. In this study, we develop a liposomal fusion model system with specific recognition using lipidated derivatives of a set of four de novo designed heterodimeric coiled coil (CC) peptide pairs. Content mixing was only obtained between liposomes functionalized with complementary peptides, demonstrating both fusogenic activity of CC peptides and the specificity of this model system. The diverse peptide fusogens revealed important relationships between the fusogenic efficacy and the peptide characteristics. The fusion efficiency increased from 20% to 70% as affinity between complementary peptides decreased, (from KF ≈ 108 to 104 M−1), and fusion efficiency also increased due to more pronounced asymmetric role-playing of membrane interacting ‘K’ peptides and homodimer-forming ‘E’ peptides. Furthermore, a new and highly fusogenic CC pair (E3/P1K) was discovered, providing an orthogonal peptide triad with the fusogenic CC pairs P2E/P2K and P3E/P3K. This E3/P1k pair was revealed, via molecular dynamics simulations, to have a shifted heptad repeat that can accommodate mismatched asparagine residues. These results will have broad implications not only for the fundamental understanding of CC design and how asparagine residues can be accommodated within the hydrophobic core, but also for drug delivery systems by revealing the necessary interplay of efficient peptide fusogens and enabling the targeted delivery of different carrier vesicles at various peptide-functionalized locations.

This paper presents a detailed study of a water adlayer adsorbed on Pt(111) and Rh(111) surfaces using periodic density functional theory methods. The interaction between the metal surface and the water molecules is assessed from molecular dynamics simulation data and single point electronic structure calculations of selected configurations. It is argued that the electron bands around the Fermi level of the metal substrate extend over the water adlayer. As a consequence in the presence of the water layer the surface as a whole still maintains its metallic conductivity-a result of a crucial importance for understanding the process of electron transfer through the water/metal interface and electrochemical reactions in particular. Our results also indicate that there exists a weak bond between the hydrogen of the water and the Rh metal atoms as opposed to the widespread (classical) models based on purely repulsive interaction. This suggests that the commonly used classical interactions potentials adopted for large scale molecular dynamics simulations of water/metal interfaces may need revision. Two adsorption models of water on transition metals with the OH bonds pointing towards or away of the surface are also examined. It is shown that due to the very close values of their adsorption energies one should consider the real structure of water on the surface as a mixture of these simple "up" and "down" models. A model for the structure of the adsorbed water layer on Rh(111) is proposed in terms of statistical averages from molecular dynamics simulations.  相似文献

Density functional theory is in principle exact and includes also long-range interactions, such as the van der Waals interactions. These are, however, part of the exchange-correlation energy functional that needs to be approximated, and are absent in the local and semilocal standard implementations. Recently a density functional which includes van der Waals interactions for planar systems has been developed, which we show can be extended to provide a treatment of planar molecules. We use this functional to calculate binding distances and energies for dimers of three of the smallest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)--naphthalene, anthracene, and pyrene.  相似文献

The syntheses of transition metal promoted (M = Co, Cr, Fe, Mo) supported vanadium phosphate (VPO) catalysts (TiO2 (anatase), γ‐Al2O3) and their characterization by N2‐adsorption, X‐ray diffractometry (XRD), FTIR‐spectroscopy and determination of V‐valence state is reported. The catalytic properties were checked in the heterogeneous catalytic ammoxidation of 2, 6‐dichlorotoluene to the corresponding nitrile. The catalyst samples were prepared by synthesis of the precursor compound VOHPO4 · 0.5 H2O, impregnation using various metal salt solutions and mixing with the support materials. The characterization revealed increased surface areas for all the promoted samples in comparison to the basic materials. XRD showed the formation of (VO)2P2O7 after calcinations as well as patterns of support materials (anatase, γ‐Al2O3). The formation of crystalline proportions of mixed oxides were not observed. The catalytic ammoxidation runs revealed a significant effect of the promoter metals on the catalytic properties by an increase of yield by ca. 20 % compared to bulk VPO. Almost complete conversion of 2, 6‐dichlorotoluene and 81 % yield of nitrile were observed using a 25 %VPCoO/γ‐Al2O3 catalyst.  相似文献
