An image processing study of a reentrant discotic cholesteric – biaxial cholesteric phase transition

In this work, we study and characterize the cholesteric sequence of phases (Ch_Dr ? Ch_B ? Ch_D), where the first Ch_Dr is the reentrant cholesteric discotic phase, Ch_B is the cholesteric biaxial phase and the second Ch_D is the cholesteric discotic phase. This sequence of phases is studied through polarized light microscopy and image processing technique, where, for the first time, the domains and borders of these transitions are established and characterized. They are also investigated and optically characterized throughout their textures.     

Conformally flat sources for the Linet–Tian spacetime

We investigate the matching, across cylindrical surfaces, of static cylindrically symmetric conformally flat spacetimes with a cosmological constant $\Lambda $ , satisfying regularity conditions at the axis, to an exterior Linet–Tian spacetime. We prove that for $\Lambda \le 0$ such matching is impossible. On the other hand, we show through simple examples that the matching is possible for $\Lambda >0$ . We suggest a physical argument that might explain these results.     

声表面波对GaAs(110)量子阱发光特性的调制

A high statistics measurement of the Lambda(+)(c) lifetime

A high statistics measurement of the Lambda(+)(c) lifetime from the Fermilab fixed-target FOCUS photoproduction experiment is presented. We describe the analysis technique with particular attention to the determination of the systematic uncertainty. The measured value of 204.6 +/- 3.4 (stat) +/- 2.5 (syst) fs from 8034 +/- 122 Lambda(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+) decays represents a significant improvement over the present world average.     

Production of a bose einstein condensate of metastable helium atoms

We recently observed a Bose-Einstein condensate in a dilute gas of ⁴He in the 2³S₁ metastable state. In this article, we describe the successive experimental steps which led to the Bose-Einstein transition at 4.7 μK: loading of a large number of atoms in a MOT, efficient transfer into a magnetic Ioffé-Pritchard trap, and optimization of the evaporative cooling ramp. Quantitative measurements are also given for the rates of elastic and inelastic collisions, both above and below the transition. Received 15 October 2001     

Letter: Bounds on the Deficit Solid Angle Parameter from Solar System Tests

We analyze the Mercury perihelion precession, the bending of starlight, and the radar echo delay in the Schwarzschild field modified by the presence of a solid angle deficit. By using the experimental data we obtain that the parameter characterizing the solid angle deficit is less than 10^–9, 10^–8 and 10^–9, respectively, on the length scales associated with such phenomena. In particular, if the solid angle deficit is generated by a global monopole, it is shown that within the length scales associated with such phenomena, the observational data available constrain the monopole energy scale to lower bounds which are in considerable agreement with the limits derived from grand unified theory and cosmology.
