Calculation of the spectra of potassium-like multicharged ions

The energy levels and oscillator strengths for dipole transitions between the levels of low-lying configurations are calculated for ions of the KI isoelectronic sequence. The calculations are based on the energy approach to the effective potential method with the most important polarization effects taken into account, including core polarization by the outer electron. The results, some of which are obtained here for the first time for potassium-like ions, can be useful in a number of related fields, such as laser physics, plasmas, and so on.Odessa Hydrometeorological Institute. Plant processing by simultaneous lactic acid fermentation and enzyme hydrolysis

Traditional ensiling of plant material by anaerobic lactic acid fermentation was combined with enzymatic hydrolysis (ENLAC for short) with cell wall degrading enzymes (hemicellulases, cellulases, and pectinases) to increase fiber digestibility or to increase the recovery of cell content from plants. Such findings were made using 0.015% (w/w, wet basis) Phylacell® enzyme preparation by ENLAC of corn and corn-sorghum mixtures, but not of forage grasses. Addition to alfalfa of a mixture of cell wall degrading enzymes, such as NOVO Viscozyme® together with NOVO Celluclast® each at 0.2–1.0% (w/w, wet basis), resulted in more rapid ensiling and improvement of rumen digestibility of silage by 20%. After 20 d of ensiling at 25 °C when the same enzymes were added to alfalfa at the 1.0% level, protein recovery by pressing increased by 35%, β-carotene recovery by 80%, and chlorophyll/xanthophyll recovery by 30%. ENLAC with the same enzymes also increased the recovery of sclareol from muscatel sage by 400%.

Effect of plasma treatment of the dielectric on electroforming of a thin-film MIM system

It was found that when a thin dielectric film is exposed to the plasma of a low-voltage gas discharge, channels with elevated conductivity form in the film and these channels significantly facilitate the subsequent electroforming of the MIM system. It is concluded from the experimental data that even in the case of metallic electrodes highly conducting channels are formed in the dielectric by electronic processes occurring under the conditions of a strong electric field and not by diffusion of the electrode material.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 10, pp. 94–98, October, 1991.     

Effect of dynamic loading on the structure of amorphous alloy Fe66Ni12Si20B2

Transmission- and depth-selective-conversion-electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (DCEMS) were applied to study variation of structural state in the bulk and in the surface layer (500, 1000, 1500 Å thick) of amorphous alloy under certain optimum conditions of the dynamic loading. The alloy structure remains amorphous. However, a certain variation of the short range order. An amorphous oxide Fe₂O₃ is formed on the amorphous alloy surface.     

Laser stabilitron

We consider a new method for producing intensity stabilization of cw lasers. This method incorporates negative feedback from a nonlinear saturable absorber to provide wideband noise-reduction and may produce an output beam for which shot noise is below the quantum limit.
