Landau theory for isotropic,nematic, smectic-A,and smectic-C phases

ABSTRACT

We use the Landau theory of phase transitions to describe the phase diagram of a liquid crystal displaying the isotropic (i), nematic (N), smectic-A and smectic-C phases. The order parameter of the smectic-C phase is defined as the projection of the director on the plane of the smectic layers, vanishing in the smectic-A phase. We present a detailed phase diagram that shows transition between any two of these phases, containing a triple point INA, a Lifshitz point NAC, a tricritical at the NA line, and a critical end point IAC. As one approaches the NC line from the smectic-C phase, the tilt angle approaches a nonzero value, but if the AC line is approached, the tilt angle vanishes according to the distance to the AC line to the power 1/2.     

Reversible click chemistry at the service of macromolecular materials. Part 1: Kinetics of the Diels-Alder reaction applied to furan-maleimide model compounds and linear polymerizations

The model Diels-Alder reaction of furfuryl acetate with N-methylmaleimide and the linear polymerization of the corresponding difunctional monomers were followed by both UV and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained from this study provided clear-cut indications about the most appropriate conditions to be applied in the preparation of novel macromolecular materials based in part on renewable resources and possessing thermoreversible, mendable and recycling features, among other properties.     

Über Herstellung von Quecksilbersolen durch Reduktion

Zusammenfassung Es wurden zwei Methoden zur Darstellung von kolloidem Quecksilber durch Reduktion von Merkurisalzen ausgearbeitet. Der Dissoziationsgrad der angewandten Merkurisalze ist von gro?em Einflu? auf das Gelingen der Soldarstellung. Es erwies sich, da? nur dann bei der Reduktion von Quecksilbersalzen das Metall in kolloider Form erhalten wird, wenn schon als Zwischenprodukt ein Sol auftritt. Und zwar ist Bedingung, da? dieses Sol Teilchen enth?lt, welche, wie die von Quecksilbersol, negativ geladen sind. Diese Bedingung wird z. B. von Merkuro-, nicht dagegen von Merkurioxydsol erfüllt.     

Effectiveness of Photodynamic Therapy in Elimination of HPV‐16 and HPV‐18 Associated with CIN I in Mexican Women

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT), using δ‐aminolevulinic acid (5‐ALA), in the elimination of premalignant cervical lesions in Mexican patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and/or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Thirty women diagnosed with CIN I and/or positive for HPV participated in the study. Topical 6% 5‐ALA in gel form was applied to the uterine cervix; after 4 h, the lesion area was irradiated with a light dose of 200 J cm^?2 at 635 nm. This procedure was performed three times at 48‐h intervals. Clinical follow‐up was performed at 3, 6, and 12 months after the initial PDT administration, by colposcopy, cervical cytology, histopathological analysis, polymerase chain reaction, and hybrid capture. Of HPV‐infected patients without evidence of CIN I, 80% cleared the infection, while HPV associated with CIN I was eliminated in 83% of patients (P < 0.05). At 12 months, CIN I had regressed in 57% of patients, although this response was not statistically significant. PDT using 6% 5‐ALA is concluded to be effective in eliminating HPV infection associated or not with CIN I.     

First observation of trapped high-field seeking ultracold neutron spin states

Ultracold neutrons were stored in a volume, using a magnetic dipole field shutter. Radial confinement was provided by material walls. Low-field seeking neutrons were axially confined above the magnetic field. High-field seeking neutrons are trapped inside the magnetic field. They can systematically shift the measured neutron lifetime to lower values in experiments with magnetic confinement.     

NMR spectroscopic characterization of new 2,3‐dihydro‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole derivatives

The ¹H and ¹³C NMR resonances of twenty‐seven 2,2‐dimethyl‐5‐(2‐nitrophenyl‐5‐substituted)‐2,3‐dihydro‐1,3,4‐thiadiazoles, and twenty‐seven 3‐acyl‐5‐(2‐amino‐5‐substituted)‐2,2‐dimethyl‐2,3‐dihydro‐1,3,4‐thiadiazoles were assigned completely using the concerted application of one‐dimensional and two‐dimensional experiments (DEPT, HMQC and HMBC). NOESY experiments, X‐ray crystallography and conformational analysis confirm the preferred conformation of these compounds. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Intercompany Study to Evaluate the Robustness of Capillary Isoelectric Focusing Technology for the Analysis of Monoclonal Antibodies

Interlaboratory comparisons are essential to bringing emerging technologies into biopharmaceutical industry practice and regulatory acceptance. As a result, an international team including 12 laboratories from 10 independent biopharmaceutical companies in the United States and Switzerland was formed to evaluate the precision and robustness of capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) to assess the charge heterogeneity of monoclonal antibodies. The different laboratories determined the apparent pI and the relative distribution of the charge isoforms of a representative monoclonal antibody (rMAb) sample using the same CIEF method. Statistical evaluation of the data was performed to determine within and between-laboratory consistencies and outlying information. The apparent pI data generated for each charge variant peak showed very good precision between laboratories with percentage of RSD values of ??0.5%. Similarly, the percentage of RSD for the rMAb charge variants percent peak area values are ??4.4% across different laboratories with different analysts using different lots of ampholytes and multiple instruments. Taken together, these results validate the appropriate use of CIEF in the biopharmaceutical industry in support of regulatory submissions.
