Dealing with external actions in belief causal networks

Graphical models are efficient and simple ways to represent dependencies between variables. We introduce in this paper the so-called belief causal networks where dependencies are uncertain causal links and where the uncertainty is represented by belief masses. Through these networks, we propose to represent the results of passively observing the spontaneous behavior of the system and also evaluate the effects of external actions. Interventions are very useful for representing causal relations, we propose to compute their effects using a generalization of the “do” operator. Even if the belief chain rule is different from the Bayesian chain rule, we show that the joint distributions of the altered structures to graphically describe interventions are equivalent. This paper also addresses new issues that are arisen when handling interventions: we argue that in real world applications, external manipulations may be imprecise and show that they have a natural encoding under the belief function framework.

Echiofruzine, a novel naringenin diglycoside from Echiochilon fruticosum growing in Tunisia

The aerial parts of the Tunisian plant Echiochilon fruticosum yielded a novel flavonol diglycoside: naringenin-5-O-beta-D-glycopyranoside-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside, named Echiofruzine (1), together with the known compounds vomifoliol-9-O-beta-D-glucopyraroside (2), 1-oxo-alpha-ionyl-9-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3) and 1-O-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl(1 --> 6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl] eugenol (4), described for the first time in the indicated plant. The structures of the four isolated compounds were established on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence.     

Production of natural fruity aroma by Geotrichum candidum

Based on its aromatic potential, Geotrichum candidum isolated from olive vegetation water was tested for the production of volatile compounds. When G. candidum was cultivated on media with glucose as the carbon source, flavor volatile compounds were produced and accumulated in the broth. Fruity flavoring compounds (pineapple-like) such as esters and alcohols were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, including ethyl esters of acetic acid and butyric acid, methyl-3-butan-1-ol, and methyl-2-propan-1-ol. Their synthesis corresponded to the stationary growth phase of the strain. Production of the volatile compounds reached 9.5 g/L of 2-hexanoic acid ethyl ester and 1.6 g/L of benzaldehyde as the main concentrated molecules. Ethyl alcohol seems to be an intermediate metabolite in this pathway.     

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of New 1,2,3‐Triazolopyrimidine Derivatives and Their Glycoside and Acyclic Nucleoside Analogs

New [1,2,4‐oxadiazolyl]methyl‐3H‐[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5‐d]pyrimidin derivatives were synthesized starting from N′‐Hydroxy‐1‐naphthimidamide. The N‐substituted acyclic nucleoside analogs as well as the substituted glycosides were also prepared by reaction with the corresponding reagents. The antimicrobial results indicated that most of the tested compounds exhibited moderate to high antimicrobial activity whereas few compounds were found to exhibit little or no activity against the tested microorganisms.

Viscoelastic behaviour of ferro- and antiferroelectric phases

We have investigated the viscoelastic behaviour exhibited by chiral smectic C* phases in homeotropic orientation. For an appropriate scattering geometry and using the light scattering technique, the orientational diffusivities associated with the Goldsone mode in ferro- and antiferroelectric phases of C₁₁thiobenzoate and C₈tolane compounds have been measured. (SmC_A*) is about 100 times weaker than (SmC*). This divergence may be largely attributed to the mode of the molecular arrangement in ferro- and antiferroelectric phases, in spite of the same helical structure observed in the two phases.     

An efficient memetic algorithm for the graph partitioning problem

We consider the component testing problem of a device that is designed to perform a mission consisting of a random sequence of phases with random durations. Testing is done at the component level to attain desired levels of mission reliability at minimum cost. The components fail exponentially where the failure rate depends on the phase of the mission. The reliability structure of the device involves a series connection of nonidentical components with different failure characteristics. The optimal component testing problem is formulated as a semi-infinite linear program. We present an algorithmic procedure to compute optimal test times based on the column generation technique, and illustrate it with numerical examples.
