Crystal Structures of 1,3-Calix[4]-bis-crown-6·3CH3CN and 1,3-Calix[4]-bis-(benzo-crown-6)·3 CH3CN

The crystal structures of a new solvate of the ditopic receptor 1,3-calix[4]-bis-crown-6, Bis-C6, and of 1,3-calix[4]-bis-(benzo-crown-6), Bis-benzoC6, are reported. Bis-C6.3 CH3CN (1) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, a = 14.388(3), b = 26.947(8), c = 14.707(4) Å, = 113.19(3)°, V = 5241(5) Å3, Z = 4. Refinement led to a final conventional R value of 0.092 for 2723 reflections. The structure of (1) differs from the previously reported structure of Bis-C6.4 CH3CN by the conformation of one crown either chain. Two acetonitrile molecules are in the close neighbourhood of the crown ether cavities. Bis-benzoC6.3 CH3CN (2) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c, a = 10.391(4), b = 17.264(11), c = 30.426(9) Å, = 94.62(3)°, V = 5440(7) Å3, Z = 4. Refinement led to a final conventional R value of 0.106 for 2965 reflections. Two acetonitrile molecules are located near the crown ether cavities, as in (1). One of the crown ether conformations is the same as in the binuclear caesium complex of Bis-benzoC6, supporting the hypothesis of a preorganization of this ligand towards the complexation of this ion; the second crown ether chain is partially disordered.     

Four new triterpene glycosides from Thalictrum squarrosum

Four new triterpene glycosides were isolated from the dried aerial parts of Thalictrum squarrosum (Ranunculaceae). They were designated as squarroside I, being a cycloartane-type glycoside, and squarrosides II, III and IV, being oleanene-type glycosides. Their structures were established by using two dimensional (2D) NMR techniques.     

Enantioselective uptake of amino acid with overoxidized polypyrrole colloid templated with L-lactate

An overoxidized polypyrrole colloid, which can recognise enantiomers of amino acids has been prepared by a newly developed molecular imprinting technique. A polypyrrole colloid, which had been polymerised from a mixture of pyrrole (monomer), polyvinylpyrrolidone (steric stabiliser), peroxodisulfate (oxidant) and L-lactate (dopant), was overoxidized to create a dopant-complementary cavity. The enantioselectivity of the overoxidized colloid was evaluated by comparing the uptake of L-alanine and L-cysteine with that of the respective D-enantiomers. The L/D uptake ratios for these amino acids were about 2, while phenylalanine showed suppressed uptake for both the enantiomers. The absence of phenylalanine uptake can be explained in terms of the molecular size, which is too large to be accommodated by the cavity created by L-lactate. In contrast, a colloid templated with L-phenyllactate took up L-phenylalanine with a higher enantioselectivity of about 7. A colloid templated with L-lactate was applied to surface chirality analysis through enantioselective adsorption on cysteine-modified gold surfaces. Quartz microbalance experiments and scanning electron microscope observation of the gold surface revealed that the colloidal particle has higher affinity to a surface modified with L-cysteine than to one modified with D-cysteine.     

Synthesis of cyclic sulfites of stereoisomeric 3,4-caranediols

Pyrimidines

The condensation of -substituted acetophenones with benzylidenebisurea in an acid medium has given 5-R-2-oxo-4,6-diphenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidones. The analogous condensation of propiophenone forms 5-methyl-2-hydroxy-4,6-diphenylpyrimidine. The tetrahydro derivatives obtained are readily dehydrogenated to 5-R-2-hydroxy-4,6-diphenylpyrimidines.For part XX, see [1].     

Coaxial electrospinning core-shell fibers for self-healing scratch on coatings

Polystyrene (PS) fibers with core-shell structure were prepared by coaxial electrostatic spinning using liquid epoxy or curing agent as the core and PS solution as the shell. Scratch self-healing coatings were realized by using the healant-loaded core-shell fibers in the matrix.     

Heterometallic lead-titanium oxyalkoxide precursors to lead titanate thin films

Two lead titanium oxyalkoxides with composition Pb₂Ti₄O₂(O₂CCH₃)₂(OC₂H₅)₁₄ and Pb₂Ti₂O₂(O₂CCH₃)₂(OCH(CH₃)₂)₈ have been isolated and characterised by elemental analysis, IR, ²⁰⁷Pb NMR and molecular weight measurements. X-ray structural analysis of the 1:2 complex confirmed the presence of two Pb₂Ti₂O units which are linked by a common Pb···Pb edge and are held together by alkoxide and acetate bridges. The acetate groups have migrated from the Pb to the Ti centres during the reaction. Hydrolysis of the 1:1 Pb/Ti complex produced clear gels providing the H₂O/complex ratio was less than 4. Heat treatment of the gel results in loss of residual organics below 400°C. The XRD pattern indicates the presence of the pyrochlore and perovskite phases after heating at 500°C but the sample is poorly crystalline. Complete conversion to the perovskite phase of lead titanate occurs on heating to 600°C for 1 hour. Thin films of lead titanate were deposited by dip-coating a solution of this complex in isopropanol. Analyses of the films, carried out using electron microprobe, Scanning Auger Spectroscopy and Rutherford Backscattering, indicated that they were of excellent quality, crystalline after heating at 600°C and with relatively sharp substrate-coating interface.     

Crystallochemical causes of the different thermal properties of [Cu(py)2(NCS)2] and [Cu(4-Mepy)2(NCS)2] complexes

The crystal structures and thermal behaviour of [Cu(py)₂(NCS)₂] (at 293) and [Cu(4-Mepy)₂(NCS)₂] and 180 K) complexes have been compared with their different temperature behaviour. It was found that the thermal stability of coordinated thiocyanate ligands in the course of thermal decomposition depends not only on the properties of the ligand L, but it is related to the arrangement of the thiocyanatocopper chains in the crystal structures.     

Structure and Electric Conductivity of (La,Sr)(Ga,Mg)O3-α Solid Electrolyte

Electric conductivity, Raman spectra, and thermal expansion of La_0.88Sr_0.12Ga_0.82Mg_0.18O_2.85 solid solution (LSGM1218) based on lanthanum gallate were studied at various temperatures, and Xray phase analysis was performed at room temperature. Dilatometric measurements showed that secondorder phase transitions occur at 775±10$ and 880± 20 K. The transition around 880 K is confirmed by Raman spectra and by a change in the conductivity activation energy in this temperature range. This transition is associated with a symmetry change in the oxygen sublattice.
