High-performance optics for thermal microscopy

We have developed a thermal microscope which has an InSb detector and optics optimized for the camera. Using this system, we evaluated maximum resolution of a 30×/numerical aperture 0.71 lens made of silicon and germanium, and achieved the cutoff frequency of around 300 line pairs/mm, which is almost a diffraction-limited performance. The thermal microscope is installed on the THEMOS-1000, a product of Hamamatsu Photonics, for thermal emission analysis.     

An extended class of minimax generalized Bayes estimators of regression coefficients

We derive minimax generalized Bayes estimators of regression coefficients in the general linear model with spherically symmetric errors under invariant quadratic loss for the case of unknown scale. The class of estimators generalizes the class considered in Maruyama and Strawderman [Y. Maruyama, W.E. Strawderman, A new class of generalized Bayes minimax ridge regression estimators, Ann. Statist., 33 (2005) 1753–1770] to include non-monotone shrinkage functions.     

Porphyrin nanochannels reinforced by hydrogen bonding

Carboxyl groups were introduced at the peripheral positions of dodecaphenylporphyrin to link nanochannel structures with intermolecular hydrogen bonds to make the supramolecular structures robust.     

Application of high‐resolution ESI and MALDI mass spectrometry to metabolite profiling of small interfering RNA duplex

We investigated the application of a high‐resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source and a matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization‐time‐of‐flight (MALDI‐TOF) mass spectrometer to the metabolite profiling of a model small interfering RNA (siRNA) duplex TSR#34 and compared their functions and capabilities. TSR#34 duplex was incubated in human serum in vitro, and the duplex and its metabolites were then purified by ion exchange chromatography in order to remove the biological matrices. The fraction containing the siRNA duplex and its metabolites was collected and desalted and then subjected to high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with a reversed phase column. The siRNA and its metabolites were separated into single strands by elevated chromatographic temperature and analyzed using the ESI‐Orbitrap or the MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometer. Using this method, the 5' and/or 3' truncated metabolites of each strand were detected in the human serum samples. The ESI‐Orbitrap mass spectrometer enabled differentiation between two possible RNA‐based sequences, a monoisotopic molecular mass difference which was less than 2 Da, with an intrinsic mass resolving power. In‐source decay (ISD) analysis using a MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometer allowed the sequencing of the RNA metabolite with characteristic fragment ions, using 2,4‐dihydroxyacetophenone (2,4‐DHAP) as a matrix. The ESI‐Orbitrap mass spectrometer provided the highest mass accuracy and the benefit of on‐line coupling with HPLC for metabolite profiling. Meanwhile, the MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometer, in combination with 2,4‐DHAP, has the potential for the sequencing of RNA by ISD analysis. The combined use of these methods will be beneficial to characterize the metabolites of therapeutic siRNA compounds. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Chloro­[N′,N′‐diethyl‐N,N‐bis(2‐pyri­dyl­methyl)­ethyl­enedi­amine‐κ4N]copper(II) perchlorate

The title mononuclear copper(II) complex, [CuCl(C₁₈H₂₆N₄)]ClO₄, shows a square‐pyramidal coordination with the diethyl­amino N atom at the apical position. Large anisotropies in the displacement parameters of the non‐H atoms of the ligand seem to be due to rotational disorder of the ClO₄^? anion.     

Synthesis and Reactions of 1-Phenylbenzo[b]thiophenium Salts

1-Phenylbenzo[b]thiophenium salts are prepared and reacted under thermal and photochemical conditions. The chemical behaviors are discussed.     

Deprotection of dithioacetals with 30% hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by tantalum(V) chloride–sodium iodide or niobium(V) chloride–sodium iodide

The reaction of dithioacetals with 30% hydrogen peroxide in the presence of catalytic amounts of tantalum(V) and iodide ion effectively produced carbonyl compounds in high yields. Dithioacetals also can be deprotected using the niobium(V) catalyzed oxidation of iodide ion by hydrogen peroxide under mild conditions.     

The resonant secondary emission of the F center in alkali halides

The secondary radiation after resonant excitation of F center and its linear polarization P correlated to the polarization of resonant light have been measured for five alkali halides at low temperatures. In KC1, the spectrum of P over the whole Stokes region is divided into three successive regions, the depolarization range at the one-phonon Raman scattering, the near plateau range, and the depolarization range down to vanishing. The former two have common relevance to resonant energy and symmetries of coupled phonons. These relevances are interpreted adopting a configuration coordinate model for 2s- and 2p-like excited states.     

H Nmr Spectra of Oligosaccharide Substituted Cyclodextrins

ABSTRACT

¹H NMR spectra of some oligosaccharide substituted cyclodextrins composed of only α-D-glucose units are analysed. Chemical shifts of protons of each glucosyl group of the chain were determined by experiments with the HOHAHA pulse technique. In spite of the similar kinds of protons, dispersion of chemical shifts is observed. The most dispersed proton is the anomeric proton, and the largest change in the chemical shifts is 0.5 ppm.
