Studies on the charge transfer complex and polymerization. XVI. Spontaneous copolymerization of cyclopentene and sulfur dioxide

The alternating copolymerization of cyclopentene and sulfur dioxide was studied. It takes place spontaneously at ?15°C. The rate of copolymerization in toluene was found to be proportional to [CPT]³ and [SO₂]² with the overall activation energy of 16.5 kcal/mole. Terpolymerizations with eight different third monomers were carried out to examine the character and behavior of the copolymerization system of CPT and SO₂. However, the polymerizations with styrene and methyl methacrylate as the third monomers were found to be extraordinary, in that all the three components are not incorporated into the polymer chain.     

Acoustic radiation from a viscoelastic beam impacted by a steel sphere

The acoustic radiation from a viscoelastic beam impacted by a steel sphere has been studied both theoretically and experimentally. Transverse vibrations of free-free viscoelastic beams have been analyzed by employing the modal analysis technique and an approximate method, with the Hertz theory used to evaluate impact forces. The wave equation was solved to determine the acoustic pressure radiated from impacted beams of circular and elliptical cross-sections. The theoretical predictions are compared with the experimental results for the radiation from PMMA beams of circular and rectangular cross-sections. It is shown that for beams of circular cross-sections the theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement and that for beams of rectangular cross-sections the radiation is well predicted by modeling them as beams with elliptical cross-sections.     

A reduction method for problems of vibration of orthotropic plates

It is shown that the problem of vibration of an orthotropic plate can be reduced to that of another orthotropic plate by a simple co-ordinate transformation, and reduction formulae are obtained. To justify the reduction formulae, fundamental natural frequencies of orthotropic rectangular plates with various boundary conditions and of a clamped orthotropic elliptical plate are discussed. As an example, an exact natural frequency of a simply supported generally orthotropic skew plate with special flexural rigidities is obtained from that of a simply supported isotropic rectangular plate.     

Synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans by platinum-olefin-catalyzed carboalkoxylation of o-alkynylphenyl acetals

The PtCl2-catalyzed cyclization reaction of o-alkynylphenyl acetals 1 in the presence of 1,5-cyclooctadiene produces 3-(alpha-alkoxyalkyl)benzofurans 2 in good to high yields. For example, the reaction of acetaldehyde ethyl 2-(1-octynyl)phenyl acetal (1a), acetaldehyde ethyl 2-(cyclohexylethynyl)phenyl acetal (1c), and acetaldehyde ethyl 2-(phenylethynyl)phenyl acetal (1f) in the presence of 2 mol % of platinum(II) chloride and 8 mol % of 1,5-cyclooctadiene in toluene at 30 degrees C gave the corresponding 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans 2a, 2c, and 2f in 91, 94, and 88% yields, respectively.
