The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen production from gaseous methanol and water: IR spectroscopic approach

IR spectroscopic and volumetric study under reaction conditions of the mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen production from gaseous methanol and water revealed that CO₂ and H₂ were produced by reaction between adsorbed CH₃O(ad) and H₂O. Another reaction path for H₂ production, CH₃ OH(ad) → H₂ + HCHO, was suggested which is dominant in the absence of water.     

Substituent effects on the kinetics for the chemiluminescence reaction of 6-arylimidazo[1,2-a]pyrazin-3(7H)-ones (Cypridina luciferin analogues): support for the single electron transfer (SET)-oxygenation mechanism with triplet molecular oxygen

Kinetics of chemiluminescence reactions of 2-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[1,2-a]pyrazin-3(7H)-one (1c, Cypridina luciferin analogue) and substituent effects of the 6-aryl group of derivatives 1 strongly suggest that the rate-determining step is a single electron transfer from an anion derived from 1 to a triplet molecular oxygen (O₂) in the oxygenation process.     

Quantitative estimation of interaction between carbohydrates and concanavalin A by surface plasmon resonance biosensor

We measured the affinity of more than 20 sugars with concanavalin A (ConA) by an optical biosensor (surface plasmon resonance sensor) using asialofetuin (ASF) as an immobilized binding partner of ConA. We determined kinetic parameters of the effects of sugars on the dissociation of ConA from ASF quantitatively, and the structural requirements of the functional groups of sugars for binding with ConA. We found that the affinity of ConA for sugars is dependent on its conformation induced by interaction with the binding partner. In addition, the results showed that optical biosensor system is well mimics the interaction of ConA with sugars in biomembrane.     

Synthesis,surface accumulation,and micellar properties of amphiphilic block copolymers

Amphiphilic block copolymers, i.e., poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-dimethylethylammoniumethyl methacrylate), were synthesized by the reaction between two prepolymers. Carboxyl-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) and hydroxyl-terminated poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) were prepared by radical polymerization of the corresponding monomers in the presence of thioglycolic acid and 2-mercaptoethanol as a chain transfer agent, respectively. Two condensation methods, i.e., DCC and the acid chloride method, were used for the reactions of these prepolymers. The subsequent quarternization produced the amphiphilic block copolymers. Surface property of poly(methyl methacrylate) films containing this amphiphilic block copolymer was examined by measuring contact angles for water. The addition of only 0.5 wt% of the block copolymer was sufficient to make poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces hydrophilic. The block copolymer formed a polymeric micelle in acetone–water mixed solvent.     

Optically detected magnetic resonance study of the lowest excited triplet state of aromatic thioketones: Xanthione

The aromatic thioketone xanthione has been investigated by means of the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique in a n-hexane matrix at ≈ 1.1 K. It was established that the short-lived red emission, which is characteristic for many thione molecules, is phosphorescence. At high temperatures (77 K) this phosphorescence originates mainly (>80%) from the T₁^z (n, π*) sublevel (k_z^(r) >k_x^(r), k_y^(r). At low temperature (1.1 K) the intersystem crossing following S₂ (π, π*) ← S₀ excitation is a highly spin-sublevel selective process which populates predominantly the T₁^x and T₁^y, levels. Hence, the slow spin—lattice relaxation phosphorescence at low temperature originates from these sublevels. A value of 0.0611 cm^?1 was obtained for the zero-field parameter |E|/hc. A lower limit of 0.66 cm^?1 has been found for the zero-field parameter |D|/hc. This value is considerably larger than those observed for ketones, and it is shown that spin—orbit coupling contributes strongly to the zero-field splitting.     

Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometric determination of ruthenium in iron meteorites

A procedure for the determination of ruthenium in iron meteorites involves its oxidation to RuO₄ by sodium periodate in hydrochloric acid and extraction of the tetroxide into chloroform. Various parameters of the method were studied: sample dissolution, optimum amount of oxidant, shaking time, distribution ratio and stability of the complex. The relative standard deviation assessed from replicate analyses of the North Chile iron meteorite was 6.6%. There are no certified standards for iron meteorites, but the value of 20.0 μg g^? obtained for this meteorite compares well with a reported abundance of 19.3 μg g^?1 obtained by radiometric neutron-activation analysis (RNAA). The analysis of 15 meteorites that had previously been analysed by RNAA gave values averaging 11% below those reported by the latter method, but within the standard deviation of the RNAA data. It is considered that the present method is a more practical alternative to RNAA for the determination of ruthenium in iron meteorites.
