Second-harmonic generation in an optically poled azo-dye/polymer film

The power dependence of the optical poling process of a new azo chromophore in the polymethylmethacrylate matrix at room temperature has been investigated. The existing theory is found to be inconsistent with the experiment. A simple model based on the rate equation is proposed to describe the writing process of the chromophore/polymer system. The measured growth rate and the plateau second-harmonic generation intensity as induced by all optical poling are found to be in good agreement with the prediction of the simple model.     

Determination of pyrethroid metabolites in human urine by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Summary An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of the pyrethroid metabolites cis and trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid, cis 3-(2,2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid, 3-phenoxybenzoic acid and 4-fluoro-3-phenoxybenzoic acid in human urine samples is described. The urine is subjected to acid-induced hydrolysis followed by exhaustive solvent extraction, covering both conjugated and free acids, followed by a common derivatisation step yielding the corresponding methyl esters. Quantitation was by diastereomeric, capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. It appears that 4-fluoro-3-phenoxybenzoic acid is a characteristic urinary marker for cyfluthrin exposure. The limits of determination are 0.5–1.0 g L^–1 urine depending on the metabolites concerned. The applicability of the method was tested on urine samples from pest control operators exposed occupationally to cypermethrin and cyfluthrin.     

Synthesis of a tweezer-like bis(arylthiaalkoxy)calix[4]arene as a cation sensor for ion-selective electrodes: an investigation of the influence of neighboring halogen atoms on cation selectivity

Two novel tweezer-like 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-bis(phenylthiaethoxy)calix[4]arenes 6 and 7 were synthesized by the reaction of 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-bis(bromoethoxy)calix[4]arenes 3 and 4 for the evaluation of their ion-selectivity in ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). X-ray structural analysis indicated that calix[4]arene 7 is in an interesting infinite linear aggregate via self-inclusion. For investigation of the influences of substitutes on the behavior of the ISEs, the halogen substituted aryl analogues of 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-bis(arylthiaethoxy)calix[4]arenes 8-12 were also synthesized and their ISE performances were evaluated under the same conditions. ISEs based on 6-12 as neutral ionophores were prepared, and their selectivity coefficients for Ag+ (log KAg,M(pot)) were investigated against other alkali metal, alkaline-earth metal, lead, ammonium ions and some transition metal ions using the fixed interference method (FIM). These ISEs showed excellent Ag+ selectivity over most of the interfering cations examined, except for Hg2+ having relative smaller interference (log KAg,Hg(pot) < or = 2.1). The 19F NMR spectra of 9 and 9.AgClO4 were recorded for investigation the fluorine environments in the complex. The 19F NMR spectra strongly suggested that the fluorine atoms on ionophore 9 participated in ligation with silver cation.     

Non-quadratic-intensity dependence of two-photon absorption induced fluorescence of organic chromophores in solution

We have provided a model to interpret the non-quadratic-intensity dependence behavior commonly observed in the two-photon fluorescence (TPF) experiment excited with high laser intensity. The model also provides one with a different technique to measure the two-photon absorption cross section of an organic chromophore in solution. In contrast to the commonly used low intensity technique that depends on the quadratic-intensity law, the present technique is based on the non-quadratic-intensity dependence of two-photon fluorescence. Auxiliary data such as two-photon quantum efficiency and fluorescence collection efficiency, essential in the low intensity method, are not required in the present technique. TPF measurements of Rhodamine B in methanol are carried out to demonstrate the validity of the present method. The method is used to determine the two-photon absorption cross section of a new chromophore attached with tricyano-derivatized furan as the electron acceptor. The two-photon absorption cross section measured using this method is also compared with that using a conventional transmission technique.     

Aerobic catalytic photooxidation of olefins by an electron-deficient Pacman bisiron(III) mu-oxo porphyrin

The synthesis and oxygen atom transfer (OAT) photoreactivity of a diiron(III) mu-oxo meso-tripentafluorophenyl bisporphyrin appended to a dibenzofuran spacer are presented. Reaction of 4,6-diformyldibenzofuran under standard Lindsey conditions furnishes the parent cofacial porphyrin architecture in a single step. These cofacial porphyrins photocatalyze the oxidation of sulfides and olefins using visible light and molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant. High turnover numbers reflect the enhanced stability of the electron-deficient diiron(III) mu-oxo bisporphyrin core appended to a dibenzofuran spacer under aerobic conditions.

Samarium(II) Monoalkyl Complex Supported by a β-Diketiminato-Based Tetradentate Ligand: Synthesis,Structure, and Catalytic Hydrosilylation of Internal Alkynes

The synthesis and catalytic applications of trivalent rare-earth metal alkyl complexes have been well developed, but the chemistry of divalent rare-earth metal alkyl complexes lagged much behind. Herein, we report the synthesis, structure, and catalytic applications of a samarium(II) monoalkyl complex supported by a β-diketiminato-based tetradentate ligand, [LSmCH(SiMe₃)₂] (L=[MeC(NDipp)CHC(Me)NCH₂CH₂N(Me)CH₂CH₂NMe₂]⁻, Dipp=2,6-(iPr)₂C₆H₃). This complex is synthesized by the salt metathesis reaction of samarium iodide [LSm(μ-I)]₂ and KCH(SiMe₃)₂ in 63 % yield. Its structure is characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing a distorted square-pyramid coordination geometry. This samarium(II) monoalkyl complex exhibits high catalytic activity in the hydrosilylation of aryl and methyl-substituted unsymmetrical internal alkynes with secondary hydrosilanes, selectively providing the α-(E) products in high yields.     

Combined effect of modified zeolite 13X and β-nucleating agent on improving β-crystal content and toughening polypropylene random copolymer

Although addition of β-NUCLEATING agent directly into homo-polypropylene(PPH) is a useful method to improve β-CRYSTAL content and toughen PPH, polypropylene random copolymer(PPR) makes this method powerless due to its random structure and low crystallinity. In this study, the-nucleated PPR with high β-CRYSTAL content was prepared by a novel high effective β-NUCLEATING system which consists of-nucleation agent(TMB-5) and modified zeolite 13X(M13X). It was found that M13X and TMB-5 had a synergistic influence on improving β-CRYSTAL content and toughening PPR. The content of β-CRYSTAL in PPR/M13X/TMB-5 was significantly larger than the sum of that in PPR/M13X and PPR/TMB-5. Besides,fracture behavior, phase morphology and relaxation of matrix chain segments were also investigated. The results showed that M13X and TMB-5 improved the mobility of amorphous chain segments at low temperature and contributed to much energy dissipation. This work provides a powerful method to modify PPR.     

Parameters optimization and phase analysis of decentered grating stretchers

A decentered grating stretcher for chirped pulse amplification systems is analyzed with oblique meridional ray tracing. Several formulae and conclusions are developed to design and optimize the stretcher. On basis of an analytical phase expression with an explicit significance, the expressions of the second-, third- and approximate fourth-order phases at the central wavelength are presented with only independent variables. These simplify the parameter design for this kind of stretcher and the phase compensation design of the whole amplifier system, which has been demonstrated with a practical example.
