Relaxation dynamics in glycerol-water mixtures: I. Glycerol-rich mixtures

We discuss the relaxation dynamics of glycerol-water mixtures, as studied by dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range from 1 Hz to 250 MHz and at temperatures between 173 and 323 K. The experimental results obtained for the glycerol-rich mixtures suggest that the main dielectric relaxation process, as well as the so-called high-frequency "excess wing" (EW) and dc conductivity, follow the same temperature dependence. This result indicates that all of these processes are induced by the same molecular origin. A new phenomenological function is proposed to describe the whole dielectric spectrum in the covered frequency range, and some possible mechanisms of dielectric behaviors through the dc conductivity, the main relaxation process, and the EW are discussed.     

Preparation and characterization of silica—polyimide composite membranes coated on porous tubes for CO2 separation

Silica-polyimide microcomposite membranes were prepared on γ-alumina-coated α-alumina support tubes, and their gas permeation properties were evaluated with He, N₂ and CO₂. Smoothing of the substrate surface and hybridization of silica and polyamic acid were both effective to form defect-free thin composite membranes. The CO₂ permeance of a membrane with a silica content of 68 wt% was one order of magnitude higher than that of a polyimide membrane having the same thickness. The permselectivity of CO₂ to N₂ was 30 at 30°C and 13 at 100°C. Contributions of the silica and polyimide phases to permeance of the composite membrane were analyzed with a two-phase permeation model. The effective thickness of the rate-controlling polyimide phase was less than one-tenth of the total thickness of the silica-polyimide membrane.     

Phase-transfer catalytic activity of soluble polystyrenes containing crown ether moieties and hydroxyl groups adjacent to the macrorings

Soluble polystyrenes with crown ether structures and hydroxyl groups adjacent to the macrorings were prepared by the reaction of epoxide-containing polystyrenes with monoaza-15-crown-5 or monoaza-18-crown-6. Rate of formation of the polymer-bound alkali cation-crown alkoxide ion pair from the soluble polystyrenes and aqueous NaOH or KOH depended on the loading of crown ether and hydroxyl units and on the size of the macroring. The elimination of HCl from less reactive 2-chloroethylbenzene with aqueous NaOH or KOH in the presence of the soluble polystyrene catalysts under two-phase conditions was limited mainly by the intrinsic reaction rate. The elimination of HBr from more reactive 2-bromoethylbenzene in the presence of the less (11%) ring-substituted polymer catalyst with 18-crown unit was limited by the alkoxide formation rate. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Photoinduced ionic polymerization. VII. Cationic polymerization of cyclohexene oxide in solid state

Photopolymerization of cyclohexene oxide in the presence of electron acceptors was studied in a bulk system (in liquid as well as in solid states). The polymerization was proved to proceed by a cationic mechanism in both states by the effect of inhibitors. In a liquid phase the light intensity dependence of the rate of polymerization and the molecular weight distribution showed a contribution of a free ionic polymerization. Any discontinuous phenomenon in the rate as well as in the molecular weight was not discerned between liquid(above ?36°C) and plastic crystal (between ?36 and ?81°C) phases. A quantum yield of monomer consumption as high as 8 × 10³ was observed in the plastic crystal phase. Below ?81°C in the normal crystal phase the rate as well as the molecular weight was remarkably suppressed.     

Synthesis of Ag2S quantum dots in water-in-CO2 microemulsions

Ag2S nanocrystals with a mean diameter of 5.9 nm (sigma= 1.65 nm) and characteristic surface plasmon resonance absorption at 330 nm have been synthesized in water-in-supercritical CO2 reverse microemulsion using the commonly used AOT surfactant with 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoro-1-pentanol (F-pentanol) as cosurfactant.     

A new route to methyl (R,E)-(-)-tetradeca-2,4,5-trienoate (pheromone of Acanthoscelides obtectus) utilizing a palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allene formation reaction

[reaction: see text] A formal total synthesis of the sex attractant of male dried bean beetle, methyl (R,E)-(-)-tetradeca-2,4,5-trienoate, was achieved by a new efficient route utilizing the Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allene synthesis reaction. It was found that the atropisomeric biaryl bisphosphine (R)-segphos showed better enantioselectivity than (R)-binap in the Pd-catalyzed reaction for preparing alkyl-substituted axially chiral allenes.     

A study of novel heat-resistant polymers: Preparation of photosensitive fluorinated polybenzoxazole precursors and physical properties of polybenzoxazoles derived from the precursors

A series of novel photosensitive polybenzoxazole precursors were prepared from polycondensation of 2,2-bis(3,3′-amino-4,4′-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane with photosensitive dicarboxylic acid chlorides such as p-phenylenediacryloyl chloride and benzophenone-4,4′-dicarboxylic chloride. The precursors are soluble in common organic solvents owing to the presence of perfluoromethyl groups in the chain structure, and insolubilized in the solvents on irradiation with the light. Polybenzoxazole patterns with high resolution as well as high aspect ratio were reproduced by baking the precursor patterns at 300°C. The pattern shrinkage on the conversion to polybenzoxazole was slight. The polybenzoxazole films offered good heat-resistance up to 400°C in addition to good electrical properties.     

Supersonic jet fluorescence spectrometry of perylene and benzo[a]pyrene

A supersonic jet instrument for fluorescence spectrometry is described. It consists of a high-temperature free expansion nozzle for continuous sample introduction and a vacuum chamber equipped with a high-speed pumping system. Rotationally cooled spectra obtained with the supersonic jet are compared with gas-phase spectra measured at high temperature for perylene and benzo[a]pyrene molecules. Each component of the unresolved band structure in the high-temperature spectra was found to be composed of a rotational congestion of several vibrational bands. For a 1:1 mixture of perylene and benzo[a]pyrene, selective detection is possible by using supersonic jet spectrometry. The detection limit for perylene is 100 ng. The advantage of this technique over other low-temperature spectrometric methods based on Shpol'skii and matrix isolation effects are discussed.     

Photoinduced face-inversion of conjugated tetraene ligands on a Pd-Pd-Pd moiety

The linear sandwich tripalladium complexes [Pd3{Ar(CH=CH)4Ar}2[BArf]2 (Ar = Ph, p-t-Bu-C6H4, p-styryl-C6H4) undergo photoinduced isomerization involving face-inversion of the tetraene ligands. Irradiation of these complexes with visible light (>510 nm) resulted in rac (staggered sandwich) to meso (eclipsed sandwich) isomerization. The structures of rac and meso isomers are determined by X-ray crystallographic analyses.     

Studies on aldose reductase inhibitors from natural products. II. Active components of a Paraguayan crude drug "Para-parai mí," Phyllanthus niruri

Aldose reductase (AR) inhibitory activity-directed fractionation of the 70% ethanolic extract of Para-parai mí, Phyllanthus niruri, has led to the isolation of three active components, ellagic acid (1), brevifolin carboxylic acid (4) and ethyl brevifolin carboxylate (5). Among them, 1 showed the highest inhibitory activity, being about 6 times more potent than quercitrin, which is a known natural inhibitor of AR.
