Synthesis and utility of 3-silylthiophenes having perfluoroalkyl groups

The synthesis of a novel class of 3-silyl substituted thiophenes possessing perfluoroalkyl groups on the silicon atom was investigated. The treatment of 3-bromothiophene with n-butyllithium followed by the reaction with halosilanes proceeded to afford the corresponding 3-silyl substituted thiophenes 1 in good yields. The chemical polymerization of the resulting 1 did not work well. However, the electropolymerization of 3-silylthiophenes 1a and 1b provided the corresponding polymers 5a and 5b with head-to-tail regioregularity. The cyclic voltammogram of the resulting polymers 5a and 5b indicated both n- and p-doping properties.

Liquid Crystal Display Research in Japan

The technology development of liquid crystal display started having a remarkable influence on the technology innovation of up-to-date electronic calculator. While a digital display using liquid crystal display has been developed in its earlier stage as the segment type which sets a limit of display to numeric and certain symbols, it is also spent an effort to develop the X - Y matrix type which can display alpha-numeric and moreover kana characters. As a practical application of the X - Y matrix type liquid crystal display, an alpha-numeric type scientific electronic calculator and electronic translator will be reported.

Further, the present status of liquid crystal display applications and trend of R&D in other consumer and industrial electronic industries in Japan will be reported. Finally, activities in the Japanese academic circles will be presented.     

Rhodium/chiral diene-catalyzed asymmetric methylation of N-sulfonylarylimines with trimethylboroxine

A hydroxorhodium complex coordinated with a chiral diene ligand catalyzed the asymmetric addition of trimethylboroxine to N-sulfonylarylimines to give high yields of chiral 1-aryl-1-ethylamines with high enantioselectivity.
