An algorithm to locate perinatal facilities in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro

In order to reduce infant mortality in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro it is desired to encourage all mothers-to-be to attend the appropriate health care facilities. A 3-level hierarchical prenatal–neonatal health care system is described together with a basic model for optimising accessibility to facilities. A genetic algorithm to solve the basic model is developed and some numerical experience reported. Extensions to the basic model and planned future research are briefly indicated.     

On bases of identities of finite inverse semigroups with solvable subgroups

It is shown that every finite inverse semigroup having only solvable subgroups, viewed as a semigroup with the additional unary operation of inversion, has no finite basis of identities, unless it is a strict inverse semigroup.     

On coherent states for the simplest quantum groups

The coherent states for the simplest quantum groups (q-Heisenberg-Weyl, SU _q (2) and the discrete series of representations of SU _q (1, 1)) are introduced and their properties investigated. The corresponding analytic representations, path integrals, and q-deformation of Berezin's quantization on , a sphere, and the Lobatchevsky plane are discussed.

An automatically controlled Nd:YAG laser with variable pulse width

The development of a high-energy, pulsed Nd:YAG laser system for materials-processing and medical applications is reported here. A variable pulse width in the range of 0.3–10 ms and a variable pulse repetition rate up to 50 pps are provided. An automatic operation system using a microprocessor-based driver/ controller enables safe operation of the laser system and automatic material processing when integrated in a laser/robot system.

Pseudodifferential operators with real analytic symbols and approximation methods for pseudodifferential equations

This paper introduces some methods (including an approximation method) for investigating pseudodifferential equations and related problems (Cauchy problems, boundary value problems,…) based on the technique of pseudodifferential operators with real analytic symbols.

Polymer-assisted complexing controlled orientation growth of ZnO nanorods

The growth of the oriented zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on silicon substrates based on a simple novel chemical transformation and thermal hydrolysis by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as self-assembling complex polymer was introduced in this paper. All the polymers were removed after chemical oxidation and only the carbonized grid backbones remained that confines the ZnO nanorod’s diameter and enhance the absorption and diffusion of ZnO at the tips of the nanorods during growth. The ZnO nanorods are investigated by FTIR, XRD and FE-SEM. The results indicated that these nanorods have fine hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure and their diameter varies from 20 to 90 nm and the length up to about 1 μm. A polymer-localized ZnO growth model is proposed, which well explains the growth behavior of ZnO nanorods.This revised version was published online in August 2005 with a corrected issue number.     

Chirped fibre Bragg grating based multiplexer and demultiplexer for DWDM applications

A multiplexer/demultiplexer for 100 GHz channel spacing based on chirped fibre Bragg gratings with different bandwidths and optical circulators is presented. The spectral characteristics, specifications and operation of these passive devices are described, showing its potential use in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) applications.
