Removal of phenol from aqueous phase by using neutralized red mud

The objective of this study is to remove the phenol from aqueous solution by using the neutralized red mud in batch adsorption technique. The study was carried out as functions of contact time, pH, initial phenol concentration, red mud dosage and effect of salt addition. The experiments demonstrated that maximum phenol removal was obtained in a wide pH range of 1-9 and it takes 10 h to attain equilibrium. The adsorption data was analyzed using the Langmuir and the Freundlich isotherm models and it was found that the Freundlich isotherm model represented the measured sorption data well. The influence of addition of salt on phenol removal depends on the relative affinity of the anions for the red mud surface and the relative concentrations of the anions.     

Palladium‐catalyzed regioselective C2‐arylation of 5‐aminoindole

Pd(II)‐catalyzed C‐H arylations of 5‐aminoindole using iodobenzenes as aryl source was studied. Despite pivalamide directing group at 5‐position of the indole, the direct C2‐arylation of the indole observed in high yields and with high regioselectivity.     

Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) as a matrix for immobilization of lipase

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was found to be suitable for the immobilization of lipase fromCandida rugosa. The best result based on hydrolytic activity was obtained by adsorption of the purified unbuffered enzyme solution onto PMMA beads without any modification of the beads. Prolonged exposure of the protein to the beads increased its adsorption but the expressed activity decreased after 1 h of exposure. The magnitude of the immobilized activity also varied with the size of the beads. Immobilization of the lipase shifted its optimal reaction temperature from 37 to 45°C. The immobilized enzyme is also more stable than the free enzyme in solution. The operational half-life of the immobilized lipase packed in a column and assayed in a closed system is 40 d.

Novel and Stereospecific Synthesis of (2S)‐3‐(2,4,5‐Trifluorophenyl)propane‐1,2‐diol from D‐Mannitol

A stereospecific synthesis of (2S)‐3‐(2,4,5‐trifluorophenyl)propane‐1,2‐diol from D ‐mannitol has been developed. The reaction of 2,3‐O‐isopropylidene‐D ‐glyceraldehyde with 2,4,5‐trifluorophenylmagnesium bromide gave [(4R)‐2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolan‐4‐yl](2,4,5‐trifluorophenyl)methanol in 65% yield as a mixture of diastereoisomers (1 : 1). The Ph₃P catalyzed reaction of the latter with C₂Cl₆ followed by reduction with Pd/C‐catalyzed hydrogenation gave (2S)‐3‐(2,4,5‐trifluorophenyl)propane‐1,2‐diol with >99% ee and 65% yield.     

Development of one-pot benzylic amination reactions of azine N-oxides

An efficient one-pot synthetic methodology has been developed for the benzylic amination reactions of methyl-substituted azine N-oxides that operate under mild conditions. The reaction was found to tolerate quinoline and isoquinoline N-oxides with electron donating and withdrawing substituents as the electrophilic reaction partners as well as a broad range of nucleophilic primary, secondary and aromatic amines, affording the benzylic amination products in up to 82% yield.
