Riordan group involutions

We study involutions in the Riordan group, especially those with combinatorial meaning. We give a new determinantal criterion for a matrix to be a Riordan involution and examine several classes of examples. A complete characterization of involutions in the Appell subgroup is developed. In another direction we find several examples that generalize the RNA matrix but are of independent interest.     

Nonexistence of a code for

In this paper, we shall prove that there is no [3q⁴-q³-q²-3q-1,5,3q⁴-4q³-2q+1]_q code over the finite field for q11. Thus, we conclude the nonexistence of a [g_q(5,d),5,d]_q code for 3q⁴-4q³-2q+1d3q⁴-4q³-q.     

Observation of the crystallization and supersaturation of mixed component NaNO3-Na2SO4 droplets by FTIR-ATR and Raman spectroscopy

We present here a study of the phase behavior of mixed component NaNO(3)-Na(2)SO(4) (SNS) droplets with NaNO(3) to Na(2)SO(4) molar ratios of 1:1, 3:1, and 10:1, comparing observations with thermodynamic predictions. Measurements are made by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection and micro-Raman spectroscopy for SNS droplets deposited on ZnSe and quartz substrates, respectively. The conventional deliquescence/efflorescence hysteresis in phase behavior is observed. On drying, heterogeneous crystallization leads to phase behavior that is consistent with bulk solution thermodynamics, with the formation of the mixed salt NaNO(3)·Na(2)SO(4)·H(2)O, Na(2)SO(4) (s), and NaNO(3) (s) all observed to form at relative humidities that coincide with predictions by the aerosol inorganics model. However, conditioning of the droplet at high relative humidity prior to drying is observed to lead to quantitative differences between the fractions of different salts formed. When substrate effects do not influence the crystallization process, supersaturated solutions are formed, and this leads to the observation of contact ion pairs. Such measurements of the phase behavior of mixed component droplets are important for testing the reliability of thermodynamic models.     

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near √s = 10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e(+)e(-) annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered π(+)π(-) pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb(-1) data sample that contains 711 × 10(6) π(+)π(-) pairs and was collected at and near the Υ(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider.

Monolayer assembly and striped architecture of Co nanoparticles on organic functionalized Si surfaces

We present a new strategy to fabricate a monolayer assembly of Br-terminated Co nanoparticles on functionalized Si surfaces by using chemical covalent bonding and microcontact printing method. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the Co nanoparticles formed on the hydroxyl-terminated Si surface exhibit two-dimensional island networks with locally ordered arrays via covalent linkage between nanoparticles and surface. On the other hand, SAMs of the nanoparticles on the aminopropyl-terminated Si surface show an individual and random distribution over an entire surface. Furthermore, we have fabricated striped architectures of Co nanoparticles using a combination of microcontact printing and covalent linkage. Microcontact printing of octadecyltrichlorosilane and selective covalent linkage between nanoparticles and functionalized Si surfaces lead to a hybrid nanostructure with selectively assembled nanoparticles stripes on the patterned functionalized Si surfaces. Measurement of the tau lepton mass and an upper limit on the mass difference between tau+ and tau-

The mass of the tau lepton has been measured in the decay mode tau-->3pinutau using a pseudomass technique. The result obtained from 414 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector is Mtau=[1776.61+/-0.13(stat)+/-0.35(sys)] MeV/c2. The upper limit on the relative mass difference between positive and negative tau leptons is |Mtau+-Mtau-|/Mtau<2.8 x 10-4 at 90% confidence level.     

Analyses of the TCR repertoire of MHC class II-restricted innate CD4+ T cells

Analysis of the T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire of innate CD4⁺ T cells selected by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II-dependent thymocyte–thymocyte (T-T) interaction (T-T CD4⁺ T cells) is essential for predicting the characteristics of the antigens that bind to these T cells and for distinguishing T-T CD4⁺ T cells from other types of innate T cells. Using the TCR^mini Tg mouse model, we show that the repertoire of TCRα chains in T-T CD4⁺ T cells was extremely diverse, in contrast to the repertoires previously described for other types of innate T cells. The TCRα chain sequences significantly overlapped between T-T CD4⁺ T cells and conventional CD4⁺ T cells in the thymus and spleen. However, the diversity of the TCRα repertoire of T-T CD4⁺ T cells seemed to be restricted compared with that of conventional CD4⁺ T cells. Interestingly, the frequency of the parental OT-II TCRα chains was significantly reduced in the process of T-T interaction. This diverse and shifted repertoire in T-T CD4⁺ T cells has biological relevance in terms of defense against diverse pathogens and a possible regulatory role during peripheral T-T interaction.
