A Water-Soluble Sodium Pectate Complex with Copper as an Electrochemical Catalyst for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

A selective noble-metal-free molecular catalyst has emerged as a fruitful approach in the quest for designing efficient and stable catalytic materials for CO₂ reduction. In this work, we report that a sodium pectate complex of copper (PG-NaCu) proved to be highly active in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO₂ to CH₄ in water. Stability and selectivity of conversion of CO₂ to CH₄ as a product at a glassy carbon electrode were discovered. The copper complex PG-NaCu was synthesized and characterized by physicochemical methods. The electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) proceeds at −1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl at ~10 mA/cm² current densities in the presence of the catalyst. The current density decreases by less than 20% within 12 h of electrolysis (the main decrease occurs in the first 3 h of electrolysis in the presence of CO₂). This copper pectate complex (PG-NaCu) combines the advantages of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts, the stability of heterogeneous solid materials and the performance (high activity and selectivity) of molecular catalysts.

Fundamental role of crystal structure curvature in plasticity and strength of solids

In the paper, we use the nonlinear multiscale approach of physical mesomechanics to demonstrate that the scales of local crystal structure curvature in solids play a fundamental role in the generation of strain-induced defects and cracks. It is shown that strain-induced defects arise at the interfaces of 2D planar and 3D crystal subsystems by the mechanism of “laser pumping” and cracks nucleate as structural phase decay in the zones of crystal structure curvature where the nonequilibrium thermodynamic potential or so-called Gibbs energy is higher than zero. Nonlinear fracture mechanics eliminates the problem of singularity 1/r in equations of crack growth but requires accounting for local lattice curvature at the crack tip.     

A novel chelatofore functionalized spiropyran of the 2‐oxaindane series

A novel chelatofore functionalized spiropyran of the 2‐oxaindane series, namely 8‐formyl‐7‐hydroxy‐3′,3′‐dimethylspiro[2H‐chromene‐2,1′(3′H)‐2‐benzofuran], C₁₉H₁₆O₄, is reported. In the crystalline state, dimers are formed as a result of the π–π stacking of aromatic groups of the 2H‐chromene part of the molecule and C—H...O interactions. The C_spiro—O bond length in the pyran ring is 1.4558 (10) Å, which is longer than or equal to the bond length in thermo‐ and photochromic 2‐oxaindane spiropyrans synthesized previously, except for the 7,8‐benzo/6‐NO₂ derivative, in which this bond length is 1.465 (2) Å.     

On the density of states for the periodic Schrödinger operator

An asymptotic formula for the density of states of the polyharmonic periodic operator (?δ) ^l +V inR ⁿ ,n≥2,l>1/2 is obtained. Special consideration is given to the case of the Schrödinger equationn=3,l=1,V being a periodic potential, where the second term of the asymptotic is found.

Synthesis of New Heteroatomic Podands from Ethyl 2-[(2-Aminophenylamino)Methylidene]-3-Oxoalkanoates and Thiophene-2,5-Dicarboxaldehyde

Condensation of two moles of ethyl 2-[(2-aminophenylamino)methylidene]-3-oxo-3-(polyfluoroalkyl)propionates with 2,5-thiophene-dicarboxaldehyde results in new heteroatomic podands. X-ray data showed that in the solid state these molecules arrange in two independent chelating fragments of b-amino enone type, thiophene fragment being a spacer.
