Solute-solvent interactions in water-tert-butyl alcohol mixtures. III. ΔG θ, ΔH θ, and ΔS θ for dissociation of aliphatic carboxylic acids in water-rich media

Standard Gibbs free energies, enthalpies, and entropies for the dissociation of various aliphatic carboxylic acids are obtained through potnetiometric and calorimetric measurements in water-tert-butyl alcohol mixtures. Results are discussed in terms of solvent structural effects for the proton exchange reaction and in terms of the compensation law to explain enthalpic and entropic effects.Part I, ref 4; Part II,Thermochimica Acta 6, 283 (1973).     

Interactions solutès-solvants dans les mèlanges eau-alcool tert.-butylique: V. enthalpie de dissolution des chlorures de sodium,potassium, rubidium et cesium

By using a calorimetric method, solution enthalpies of sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium chlorides in mixtures containing from 0 to 45% by weight of alcohol are obtained. Standard enthalpies and transfer enthalpies are estimated. From previous data concerning Gibbs energies of transfer from water to the same solvent mixtures, transfer entropies are calculated. Enthalpies and entropies exhibit a maximum for molar fractions of about 0.07 of organic solvent. Results are discussed in terms of enhancement of the structuration of the aqueous network.     

Modelisation of the Association Mechanism of a Series of Huperzine Derivatives Used for Alzheimer Disease with Human Serum Albumin: Effect of the Magnesium Cation

The role of the Mg²⁺ cation on huperzine molecule binding (drugs used for Alzheimer disease) on human serum albumin (HSA) was studied by affinity chromatography. The thermodynamic data corresponding to this binding were determined for a wide range of Mg²⁺ concentrations (x). For each solute, the huperzine binding on HSA was divided into two Mg²⁺ concentration regions. For a low x value, below x_c (1.2 mM), the binding decrease with x. For x above x_c the hydrophobic effect and van der Waals interactions between the huperzine molecule and the HSA implied a decrease in its binding. These results showed that for patients with Alzheimer disease, an Mg²⁺ supplementation during treatment with these huperzine molecules can increase the active pharmacological molecule concentration.     

Microwave-assisted synthesis of mGluR1 ligands: carbon, nitrogen and oxygen linked derivatives of pyrido[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-ylamines

The syntheses of 6-fluoropyrido[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-ylamine derivatives is reported herein. Methods for generating C, N and O linked analogues under microwave irradiation are described.     

Complexes pondérés sur les compactifications de Baily-Borel: Le cas des variétés de Siegel

In this work, we calculate the trace of a Hecke correspondance composed with a power of the Frobenius endomorphism on the fibre of the intersection complexes of the Baily-Borel compactification of a Siegel modular variety.

Our main tool is Pink's theorem about the restriction to the strata of the Baily-Borel compactification of the direct image of a local system on the Shimura variety. To use this theorem, we give a new construction of the intermediate extension of a pure perverse sheaf as a weight truncation of the full direct image.

More generally, we are able to define analogs in positive characteristic of the weighted cohomology complexes introduced by Goresky, Harder and MacPherson.

     

Characterization of Glycosyltransferase Activity of Wild-Type Leuconostoc mesenteroides Strains from Bulgarian Fermented Vegetables

Glycosyltransferase activity of 13 Leuconostoc mesenteroides strains isolated from Bulgarian fermented vegetables was investigated. All the strains displayed a mucoid phenotype on sucrose-containing agar media. Strains were characterized according to carbohydrate fermentation, species-specific multiple PCR using several primers, repetitive element-PCR fingerprinting using (GTG)₅ primers and glycosyltransferase activity. Level of activity and cellular localization (soluble or cell-associated) were variable among strains. Precipitation of exopolysaccharides produced from sucrose by the soluble fractions from these strains allowed recovery of only glucans and further characterization by ¹H and ¹³C NMR analysis and enzymatic digestion with dextranase revealed dextran production. However, levans could be detected in presence of raffinose as fructosyl donor. Both fructosyltransferase and glucosyltransferase encoding genes were detected by PCR and both active enzymes were detected after functional characterization by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and in situ polymer production after incubation with sucrose. This work therefore showed that concomitant production of glucosyltransferase and fructosyltransferase is widespread in L. mesenteroides strains.
