Novel Method for Soluble‐Polymer‐Supported Synthesis of 3,4,5‐Trisubstituted Isoxazoles

A practical and efficient liquid‐phase synthesis of 3,4,5‐trisubstituted isoxazoles using poly(ethylene glycol) as supported is described. Soluble‐polymer‐supported nitrile oxide generated in situ reacted with chalcones to afford polymer‐supported isoxazolines, which were cleaved by sodium methoxide to generate 3,4,5‐trisubstituted isoxazoles instead of 3,4,5‐trisubstituted isoxazolines. This sequential process provided a novel method to synthesize 3,4,5‐trisubstituted isoxazoles.     

Oxidation of Aliphatic α,β-Unsaturated Aldimines to Amides Specifically by Oxone with AlCl3

α,β-Unsaturated aldimines were specifically oxidized to amides with Oxone in the presence of AlCl₃ as a Lewis acid in CH₂Cl₂. No migration of aryl group occurred in the rearrangement reaction.     

Green Method for the Synthesis of Benzo[f]pyrimido[4,5-b]quinoline Derivatives Catalyzed by Iodine in Aqueous Media

A convenient one-pot synthesis of benzo[f]pyrimido[4,5-b]quinoline derivatives is described via three-component reaction of benzaldehydes, naphthalen-2-amine, and barbituric acid at room temperature in aqueous media catalyzed by iodine. Compared with other methods, this three-component reaction used a green solvent, gave good yields, and was operationally simple.     

Study on the “Tin-Ene” reaction of α-bromoacetophenone and metallic tin with aldehydes

β-hydroxy ketones were obtained in good yields by the “tin-ene” reactions of α-bromoacetophenone and metallic tin with aldehydes.     

Expeditious Approach to Coumarins via Pechmann Reaction Catalyzed by Molecular Iodine or AgOTf

An efficient and facile route for the synthesis of coumarins via the Pechmann reaction catalyzed by molecular iodine or AgOTf was described.     

One-pot synthesis of multisubstituted quaterphenyls and cyclopropanes

An efficient one-step synthetic route toward multifunctionalized quaterphenyls 3 or cyclopropanes 4 is developed from substituted chalcones 1 and sulfones 2 in good yields via a regioselective [3C+3C] or [1C+2C] annulation. The reaction features mild conditions, multisubstitution, and functional groups tolerance and is transition metal catalyst-free. The protocol provides a novel alternative to the conventional methodologies for the synthesis of quaterphenyls or cyclopropanes.     

Prins Cyclization of Styrenes or Acetophenone Catalyzed by DBSA in Water

Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) was proved to be an efficient catalyst for Prins cyclization of styrenes and formaldehyde or acetaldehyde in water. A tandem dehydration/Prins cyclization reaction using a tertiary alcohol and formaldehyde as substrates proceeded very well by using DBSA as catalyst. Acetophenone, which is less reactive compared with styrene, can also react with formaldehyde when catalyzed by DBSA in water to afford 1,3-dioxan-5-ylphenylmethanone in good yield.     

Synthesis of poly(l-lactic acid) with improved thermal stability by sulfonic acid-catalyzed melt/solid polycondensation

Melt/solid polycondensation (MP/SSP) is deemed as an alternative synthetic route besides ring-opening polymerization (ROP) in synthesizing poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA). However, it is found that PLLA synthesized by MP/SSP has much poorer thermal stability than that by ROP due to more residual Sn(II) metallic catalyst in the former, but sulfonic acids does not show any detrimental effect on the thermal stability of PLLA. To synthesizing PLLA with good thermal stability by MP/SSP, a variety of commercially available sulfonic acids were screened as catalysts in MP/SSP of PLLA. Among these nonmetallic catalysts, it was found that 1,3-propanedisulfonic acid (PSA) and 1,5-naphthalene disulfonic acid (NSA) exhibited satisfactory catalytic reactivity and PLLAs with excellent thermal stability, high molecular weight, little coloration and good optical purity were successfully synthesized by MP/SSP. The decomposition temperature was increased by 80–100 °C in comparison to SnCl₂-catalyzed PLLA, and the thermal stability is comparable to commercial PLLA produced by ROP.     

Potential infrared liquid crystals

Principles for selecting potential infrared nematic liquid crystals are described. Optical and electro-optic properties of two cyanotolanes, 4-n-alkyl-4′-cyanotolanes and three commercial liquid-crystal mixtures were chosen for evaluation. Their applications for modulating infrared radiation are addressed.     

Fused-ring and linking group effects of proton donors and acceptors on simple H-bonded liquid crystals

Two fused-ring structures, 6-decyloxy-2-naphthoic acid C₁₀ONA (3) and 6-dodecyloxyisoquinoline IS (8), were synthesized and utilized as proton donor and acceptor moieties to construct a series of simple mesogenic supramolecules. The other complementary hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) moieties are benzoic acids, thiophenecarboxylic acid and pyridines containing different alkyl chain lengths connected by ether and ester linkages, i.e. 4-alkoxybenzoic acid C _n OBA (1), terephthalic acid monoalkyl ester C _n COOBA (2), 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid monodecyl ester C₁₀COOTHA (4), 4-alkoxypyridine C _n OP (6) and isonicotinic acid alkyl ester C _n COOP (7). Several series of simple mesogenic supramolecular dimers were constructed from 1:1 molar ratios of proton donors (C _n OBA, C _n COOBA, C₁₀ONA and C₁₀COOTHA) and proton acceptors (IS, C _n OP and C _n COOP), though the proton acceptor C _n COOP induced phase separation in all complexes. In order to investigate their fused-ring and linking group effects on the mesogenic properties of the H-bonded complexes, analogous simple supramolecular structures are compared. Supramolecular architecture and the distinct mesomorphism of these simple H-bonded liquid crystalline materials were confirmed by polarizing optical microscopy, DSC and powder X-ray diffraction experiments.
