We investigated the effect of fatty acids such as stearic acid (SA, 18:0), oleic acid (OA, 18:1), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6) on a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayer by determining the phase transition temperature, fluorescence anisotropy of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH), and detergent insolubility. Treatment with unsaturated fatty acid broadened and shifted the phase transitions of the DPPC bilayer to a lower temperature. The phase transition temperature and the value of fluorescence anisotropy of DPH at 37 degrees C decreased progressively with increasing treatment amounts of unsaturated fatty acid. A large amount of the DPPC bilayer treated with unsaturated fatty acid was dissolved in Triton X-100, obtaining a low level of detergent insolubility. These modifications of the bilayer physical properties were most pronounced with DHA and EPA treatment. These data show that unsaturated fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, induce a marked change in the lipid bilayer structure. The composition of fatty acids in the DPPC bilayer was similar after treatment with various unsaturated fatty acids, suggesting that the different actions of unsaturated fatty acids are attributed to change in the molecular structure (e.g., kinked conformation by double bonds). We further explored the change in physical properties induced by fatty acids dispersed in a water-in-oil-in-water multiple emulsion and found that unsaturated fatty acids acted efficiently on the DPPC bilayer, even when incorporated in emulsion form.  相似文献

We present results on the measurement of Lambda and Lambda(macro) production in Au+Au collisions at square root of (S (NN) = 130 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The transverse momentum spectra were measured for minimum bias and for the 5% most central events. The Lambda;/Lambda ratios are constant as a function of p(T) and the number of participants. The measured net Lambda density is significantly larger than predicted by models based on hadronic strings (e.g., HIJING) but in approximate agreement with models which include the gluon-junction mechanism.  相似文献

A theoretical treatment for the effect of thermal vibration on the X-ray scattering intensity for a helical polymer crystal is presented. The treatment involves assumptions that (1) the unit cell of the crystal contains only one polymer chain and (2) fluctuations of the atomic positions are small. The temperature factor of the intensity of Bragg reflections is expressed in terms of mean squares of fluctuations of helical parameters. Quantification of small, dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) cholesterol is clinically significant. We propose a practical technique to estimate the amount of sdLDL cholesterol using dynamic light scattering (DLS). An analytical solution in a closed form has newly been obtained to estimate the weight fraction of one species of scatterers in the DLS measurement of two species of scatterers. Using this solution, we can quantify the sdLDL cholesterol amount from the amounts of the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which are commonly obtained through clinical tests. The accuracy of the proposed technique was confirmed experimentally using latex spheres with known size distributions. The applicability of the proposed technique was examined using samples of human blood serum. The possibility of estimating the sdLDL amount using the HDL data was demonstrated. These results suggest that the quantitative estimation of sdLDL amounts using DLS is feasible for point-of-care testing in clinical practice.  相似文献

The nature of smectic A liquid crystals and the phase transitions from smectic A to nematic phases are studied in the homologous series of 4-(4'-octyloxy-benzoyloxy)benzylidene-4'-substituted anilines, in which the substituents are H, F, Cl, Br, I, NO2 and CN. Measurements have been performed for the dipole moment of the molecule, the smectic A lattice period, the temperatures and the entropies of phase transitions, and the temperature dependence of the orientational order parameter, all of which provide information on the intermolecular pair potentials. It is shown that the introduction of a terminal polar substituent brings about counteracting contributions to the stability of the smectic A state. It is suggested that the reentrant nematic phase transition can appear in the strongly polar mesogens if the extent of antiparallel association of the molecules increases on lowering the temperature.  相似文献

A new liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC/MS) method has been developed for the quantitative analysis of plasmalogens in human plasma using a nonendogenous plasmalogen (1-O-1′-(Z)-tricosenyl-2-oleoyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine, PLS 23:0/18:1) as an internal standard. 1-O-1′-(Z)-Tricosenyl glyceryl ether was prepared by reacting lithioalkoxyallyl with 1-iodoeicosane as the key intermediate in the formation of PLS 23:0/18:1. In LC/MS analyses, PLS 23:0/18:1 generated significant fragment ions in positive and negative modes. In positive ion mode, the [M+H]+ of PLS 23:0/18:1 yielded unique fragments with cleavages at the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of the glycerol backbone. In negative ion mode, the [M+CH3COO] of PLS 23:0/18:1 resulted in characteristic fragmentation at the sn-2 and sn-3 positions. 1-O-1′-(Z)-Hexadecenyl-2-linoleoyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (PLS 16:0/18:2) and 2-arachidonoyl-O-1′-(Z)-hexadecenyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (PLS 16:0/20:4) were chemically synthesized as PLS 23:0/18:1. The calibration curves obtained for PLS 16:0/18:2 and PLS 16:0/20:4 were linear throughout the calibration range (0.04–1.60 pmol). The LOD (S/N = 5:1) was 0.008 pmol and the LOQ (S/N = 6:1) was 0.01 pmol for both PLS 16:0/18:2 and PLS 16:0/20:4. Plasma concentrations of PLS 16:0/18:2 and PLS 16:0/20:4 were 4.0 ± 1.3 μM and 3.5 ± 1.2 μM (mean ± SD), respectively, in five healthy volunteers.  相似文献
