An improved large scale synthesis of 1,4-anhydro-4-thio-d-ribitol

An improved large scale synthesis of 1,4-anhydro-4-thio-d-ribitol (4) from d-ribose has been accomplished by combining the O-allyl and O-p-methoxybenzyl protecting groups. Compound 4 was obtained in 31% yield in eight steps with three chromatographic separations.     

Fluctuations in time intervals of financial data from the view point of the Gini index

We propose an approach to explain fluctuations in time intervals of financial markets data from the view-point of the Gini index. We show the explicit form of the Gini index for a Weibull distribution: A good candidate to describe the first passage time of foreign exchange rate. The analytical expression of the Gini index compares well with the value obtained from empirical data.     

Comparisons of O-acylation and Friedel-Crafts acylation of phenols and acyl chlorides and Fries rearrangement of phenyl esters in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid: effective synthesis of optically active homotyrosines

Reactions involving phenol derivatives and acyl chlorides have to be controlled for competitive O-acylations and C-acylations (Friedel-Crafts acylations and Fries rearrangements) in acidic condition. The extent for these reactions in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH), which is used as catalyst and solvent, is examined. Although diluted TfOH was needed for effective O-acylation, concentrated TfOH was required for effective C-acylations in mild condition. These results have been applied to the novel synthesis of homotyrosine derivatives. Both Fries rearrangement of N-TFA-Asp(OBn)-OMe and Friedel-Crafts acylation of phenol with N-TFA-Asp(Cl)-OMe in TfOH afforded the homotyrosine skeleton, followed by reduction and deprotection afforded homotyrosines maintaining stereochemistry of Asp as an optically pure form.     

A new method for the stereoselective construction of angular methyl group of fuzed cyclic ethers

A convenient method for the stereoselective construction of angular methyl group of fuzed cyclic ethers is described. Reactions of mixed thioacetals with Me₂Zn/Zn(OTf)₂ afforded the corresponding methylated products in good yields. Various protective groups such as MOM ether, benzylidene acetal, TBS ether, and pivaloyl group were stable under the reaction conditions.     

Photoisomerization of 2′-deoxyribofuranosyl and ribofuranosyl 2-phenylazoimidazole

Novel photo responsive nucleosides, 1-N-(2′-deoxyribofuranosyl) 2-phenylazoimidazole and 1-N-ribofuranosyl 2-phenylazoimidazole have been designed and synthesized. trans-cis Photoisomerizations of the nucleosides with irradiation at a specific wavelength have been observed and the isomerizations are perfectly reversible.     

Effect of preparative conditions on crystallinity of apatite particles obtained from simulated body fluids

Preparation of colloidal hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles under body fluid conditions was investigated with focusing on the effect of preparative conditions on crystallinity of the resulting particles. Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane was added to 1.5SBF (a solution having 1.5 times higher ion concentrations than those of a simulated body fluid, SBF) to increase the solution pH, which resulted in induction of homogeneous nucleation of HAp in the solution. Colloidal HAp particles having diameters about 300 nm were obtained. When the reaction was proceeded at 70°C and the sample was dried by heating, it was effective to obtain HAp particles having high crystallinity. Experimental results support that remaining water in the sample contributed to increase HAp crystallinity.     

Synthesis of mono- and 1,3-diaminocalix[4]arenes via Ullmann-type amination and amidation of 1,3-bistriflate esters of calix[4]arenes

Practical methods are described for the preparation of monoamines 4 and 1,3-diamines 5, bearing one or two amino group(s) instead of the hydroxy group(s) at the 28-position or at both the 26- and 28-positions of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (1a) and p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (1b), via the Ullmann-type amination or amidation. Thus, the copper-catalyzed or mediated amination of the 1,3-bistriflate ester (2a) of 1a with benzylamine affords either mono(benzylamino) triflate 7a or 1,3-bis(benzylamine) 8 in a high yield, depending on the reaction conditions. On the other hand, the 1,3-bistriflate ester (2b) of 1b resists disubstitution and produces, under stoichiometric conditions, mono(benzylamino) triflate 7b. The disubstitution of 2b is achieved by amidation with tosylamide, giving 1,3-bis(tosylamide) 17b. The hydrogenolysis of the benzylamino moiety of 7a, followed by the hydrolysis of the Tf moiety, affords monoamine 4a, while the hydrogenolysis of 8 affords 1,3-diamine 5a. The amino moiety of 7b can be deprotected under acidic conditions to give, after hydrolysis, monoamine 4b. The hydrolysis of 17b affords 1,3-diamine 5b. The overall yields of compounds 4a, 4b, 5a, and 5b are 72%, 45%, 78%, and 24%, respectively, based on commercially available compounds 1 and are much higher than the ones previously reported in the literature.     

A coumarin-based fluorescent probe for Hg2+ and Ag+ with an N'-acetylthioureido group as a fluorescence switch

For detection of Hg(2+) and Ag(+), we have developed a coumarin-based probe with an N'-acetylthioureido group as a novel fluorescence switch, in which the hydrogen bond formation between the N-hydrogen and the acetyl O atom markedly increases the susceptibility of the probe toward desulfurization by Hg(2+) and Ag(+).
