The crystal structure and absolute configuration of the antitumor platinum complex trans(OH)-Pt(OH)2(malonato)(1R,2R-cyclohexanediamine).

The absolute configuration of the anti-tumor complex trans(OH)-Pt(OH)2(malonato)(1R,2R-cyclohexanediamine) was determined by X-ray anomalous scattering technique. The final unit cell was monoclinic, space group P2(1) with a = 9.142 A, b = 7.788 A, c = 11.946 A, beta = 96.48 degrees, Z = 2. The crystal structure was determined by direct method and difference Fourier synthesis, and refined to R = 0.025 and Rw = 0.033 based on 2768 independent reflections. The platinum atom has roughly octahedral coordination. The cyclohexane ring has the expected chair configuration, with two amino groups in equatorial positions while the malonato ligand, in contrast, shows a boat conformation for six membered Pt O-C-C-C-O ring.     

Selective chemical vapor deposition synthesis of double-wall carbon nanotubes on mesoporous silica

Double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) have been selectively synthesized over Fe/Co loaded mesoporous silica by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of alcohol. Several silica materials with desired pore diameter and morphology have been investigated for the DWNT growth. The diameter distribution and selectivity of the DWNT are found to depend on the reaction temperature, pore size, and thermal stability of the support material. A high-yield synthesis of DWNTs has been achieved at 900 degrees C over high-temperature stable mesoporous silica. The outer diameter of DWNTs is found to be in the range of 1.5-5.4 nm with a "d" spacing of 0.38 +/- 0.02 nm between inner and outer layers, which is much larger than those of multiwall carbon nanotubes.     

A New Family of Indoaniline-Derived Calix[4]arenes: Synthesis and Optical Recognition Properties as a Chromogenic Receptor(1)

A new family of indoaniline-derived calix[4]arenes has been synthesized for the purpose of developing a new chromogenic receptor. A condensing reaction of calix[4]arene (1) with 4-(diethylamino)-2-methylaniline hydrochloride (2) in the presence of an oxidizing agent under alkaline conditions affords mono- (3), 1,2-bis- (4), 1,3-bis- (5), and tetrakisindoaniline-derived (6) calix[4]arenes after careful column chromatography. Compound 3 is crystallized from a CHCl(3)-MeOH solution, and the crystal structure was determined by X-ray analysis. The crystal is monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, Z = 4, a = 19.507(6) ?, b = 18.591(6) ?, c = 8.524(2) ?, beta = 94.69(2) degrees. The final R value for 2406 reflections of F(o) > 3sigma(F(o)) is 0.085. A unique intramolecular hydrogen-bonding network involving the carbonyl oxygen of indoaniline for 3 implied that the quinone carbonyl group as an acceptor of the chromophore can easily be subjected to an electrostatic interaction in the lower rim. Indeed, 1,3-bis(indoaniline)-derived 2,4-bis((ethoxycarbonyl)methoxy)calix[4]arene 7, prepared by the reaction of 5 with ethyl bromoacetate in the presence of NaH, is capable of undergoing an efficient ion-dipole interaction between the binding cation and the two quinone carbonyl groups of the chromophores, so that a selective Ca(2+)-induced pronounced color change (wavelength change > 100 nm) occurs with an association constant on the order of 10(6) in 99% EtOH, making 7 of potential use as an optical sensor for Ca(2+) detection. The IR and NMR studies have indicated that Ca(2+) is encapsulated in the cavity made by the distally located OCH(2)CO(2) groups on the lower rim of the cone-shaped calix[4]arene segment. Interestingly, however, the shape of the cavity in which Ca(2+) has been encapsulated does not have a C(2) axis of symmetry, as inferred from the (1)H-(1)H COSY experiment. On the other hand, 1,2-bis(indoaniline)-derived analogue 8 shows no response with metal ions, which can be interpreted to mean the absence of a cavity for encapsulation on the lower rim.     

Palladium-catalyzed cycloheptatriene formation by [3+2+2] cocyclization of 2-substituted allylic alcohols and alkynes

Cycloheptatrienes were obtained by the reaction of 2-substituted allylic alcohols with alkynes in the presence of catalytic amounts of palladium complexes and p-toluenesulfonic acid.     

High performance liquid chromatography with an electrochemical detector in the cathodic mode as a tool for the determination of p-nitrophenol and assay of acid phosphatase in urine samples

Utilizing a commercially available helium-purging device and PEEK tubes for all tubing, especially for connection between the mobile phase and pump, high performance liquid chromatography with an electrochemical detector (ECD/HPLC) at the cathodic mode is a simple and precise method for the determination of p-nitrophenol (NP). Studies with cyclic and hydrodynamic voltammetry indicated that 25% aqueous MeOH containing 0.1% (v/v) CF(3)CO(2)H and -0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl are the best mobile phase and detection potential for cathodic ECD/HPLC. With the present system, the limits of detection and determination were 0.2 and 0.25 microM, respectively, and up to 50 microM, a linear calibration curve was afforded. Within-day precisions for the analysis of 5 and 50 microM NP were 0.8 and 0.7% (n=6), respectively, and between-day precisions (n=6) for these samples were 3.5 and 2.2%, respectively. Compared with the commonly used Bessey-Lowry-Brock method, cathodic ECD/HPLC was useful for the assay of acid phosphatase in urine samples with p-nitrophenyl phosphate disodium salt as a substrate.     

Facile synthesis of polyamide dendrimers from unprotected AB2 building blocks

[structure: see text]. A fast, inexpensive, and highly efficient synthesis of aromatic polyamide dendrimers without the need for protection and deprotection steps has been developed. Dendrons and third-generation polyamide dendrimers were easily prepared by a convergent approach involving activation of a focal point with thionyl chloride, followed by condensation with unprotected AB2 building blocks.     

A new method of plutonium speciation in sea water

A new method of plutonium speciation in large volume of sea water was developed by using adsorption of Pu(IV)-Xylenol Orange chelate and Pu-Arsenazo chelate on XAD-2 resin, respectively. The tetravalent plutonium ion reacts selectively with Xylenol Orange in acid solution and that adsorbed on XAD-2 resin. Total plutonium can be collected onto the resin in the form of its Arsenazo-III complex. The determination of plutonium then was carried out by alpha-ray spectrometric method after decomposition of organic complexes and ion exchange separation. The present method is confirmed for convenient and rapid preconcentration procedure for plutonium shipboard chemistry.     

Synthesis of Six-Membered Compounds by Environmentally Friendly Cyclization Using Indirect Electrolysis

[Ni(cyclam)](ClO(4))(2)-catalyzed indirect electroreduction of olefinic bromides produced six-membered compounds in low to high yields. The synthetic intermediate 49 of Ipecac and Corynanthe alkaloids was obtained in 88% yield in a highly stereoselective manner. Lactam 66, the synthetic precursor of tacamonine, was prepared in 49% yield as a mixture of two diastereoisomers. The electrolysis of the bromoacetates gave the debrominated compounds in good yields.     

Rapid oligosaccharide synthesis using a fluorous protective group

The Bfp-OH, a novel fluorous protecting reagent, was able to be easily prepared. The Bfp group was readily introduced to a carbohydrate, removed in high yield, and recyclable after cleavage. The use of the Bfp group made it possible to synthesize a pentasaccharide by minimal column chromatography purification. Each synthetic intermediate was able to be easily purified only by simple fluorous-organic solvent extraction and monitored by TLC, NMR, and MS.
