Immobilization of RuS2 Nanoparticles Prepared in Reverse Micellar System onto Thiol-Modified Polystyrene Particles and their Photocatalytic Properties

RuS₂ nanoparticles, smaller than 3 nm in diameter, were prepared by H₂S gas injection into the AOT/isooctane reverse micellar solution containing RuCl₃ aqueous solution. The nanoparticle size was found to be independent of the W_o (water content) value of the reverse micellar system, as shown by TEM observation. The recovery and immobilization of the RuS₂ nanoparticles from reverse micelles onto thiol-modified polystyrene particles (PSt-SH) were successfully carried out, by the addition of PSt-SH into the reverse micellar solution under conditions of mild stirring. The resulting composites, PSt-RuS₂, showed photocatalytic activity for H₂ generation form aqueous solution containing 2-propanol and Na₂SO₃ as sacrificial electron donors.     

Spatiotemporally controlled contraction of micropatterned skeletal muscle cells on a hydrogel sheet

We have developed gel sheet-supported C(2)C(12) myotube micropatterns and combined them with a microelectrode array chip to afford a skeletal muscle cell-based bioassay system. Myotube line patterns cultured on a glass substrate were transferred with 100% efficiency to the surface of fibrin gel sheets. The contractile behavior of each myotube line pattern on the gel was individually controlled by localized electrical stimulation using microelectrode arrays that had been previously modified with electropolymerized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). We successfully demonstrated fluorescent imaging of the contraction-induced translocation of the glucose transporter, GLUT4, from intracellular vesicles to the plasma membrane of the myotubes. This device is applicable for the bioassay of contraction-induced metabolic alterations in a skeletal muscle cell.     

Manipulation of Single‐Stranded DNA by Using an Artificial Site‐Selective DNA Cutter Composed of Cerium(IV)/EDTA and Phosphonate–Oligonucleotide Conjugates

An artificial site‐selective DNA cutter to hydrolyze single‐stranded DNA at a desired site was prepared from Ce^IV/ethylenediamintetraacetic acid (EDTA) and two ethylenediamine‐N,N,N′,N′‐tetrakis(methylenephosphonic acid)–oligonucleotide conjugates. By using this cutter, the sense strand of a blue fluorescent protein (BFP) gene was selectively cut at a predetermined site in the chromophore‐coding region. The upstream fragment obtained by the site‐selective scission was ligated with the downstream fragment of the closely related green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene so that the 5′‐ and 3′‐end portions of the chromophore came from the BFP fragment and the GFP fragment, respectively. The recombinant gene was successfully expressed in E. coli and the chimeric chromophore emitted green fluorescence as expected.     

Conductive liquid crystalline compounds having a piperazine structure

New conductive thermotropic liquid crystalline materials having a piperazine ring in the central core: 1-[4-(9-decenyloxy)phenyl]-4-alkylpiperazines ( 6 ) were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviours of these compounds and their conductivity in the liquid crystal phase were measured. The principal features of these compounds are to exhibit a smectic B phase around room temperature (for example 6 : Cr 50 SmB 81 I, °C) and to exhibit a large dark current (6d: 430 μA cm^-2, applied voltage 20 V, at 70°C) in the smectic B phase.     

Halving Steiner 2-designs

A Steiner 2-design S(2,k,v) is said to be halvable if the block set can be partitioned into two isomorphic sets. This is equivalent to an edge-disjoint decomposition of a self-complementary graph G on v vertices into K_ks. The obvious necessary condition of those orders v for which there exists a halvable S(2,k,v) is that v admits the existence of an S(2,k,v) with an even number of blocks. In this paper, we give an asymptotic solution for various block sizes. We prove that for any k?5 or any Mersenne prime k, there is a constant number v₀ such that if v>v₀ and v satisfies the above necessary condition, then there exists a halvable S(2,k,v). We also show that a halvable S(2,2ⁿ,v) exists for over a half of possible orders. Some recursive constructions generating infinitely many new halvable Steiner 2-designs are also presented.     

Photoluminescence studies of localized excitons in GaSe1−xSx solid solutions

We have measured the photoluminescence spectra of indirect excitons localized by alloy fluctuation in GaSe_1?xS_x solid solutions. The presence of the mobility edge for the localized exciton states is essential for explaining the observed luminescence spectra.     

E 6,7,8 magnetized extra-dimensional models

We study 10D super Yang–Mills theory with the gauge groups E ₆, E ₇ and E ₈. We consider the torus/orbifold compactification with magnetic fluxes and Wilson lines. They lead to 4D interesting models with three families of quarks and leptons, whose profiles in extra dimensions are quasi-localized because of magnetic fluxes.     

Neural expression and post-transcriptional dosage compensation of the steroid metabolic enzyme 17β-HSD type 4

Background  

Steroids affect many tissues, including the brain. In the zebra finch, the estrogenic steroid estradiol (E₂) is especially effective at promoting growth of the neural circuit specialized for song. In this species, only the males sing and they have a much larger and more interconnected song circuit than females. Thus, it was surprising that the gene for 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 4 (HSD17B4), an enzyme that converts E₂ to a less potent estrogen, had been mapped to the Z sex chromosome. As a consequence, it was likely that HSD17B4 was differentially expressed in males (ZZ) and females (ZW) because dosage compensation of Z chromosome genes is incomplete in birds. If a higher abundance of HSD17B4 mRNA in males than females was translated into functional enzyme in the brain, then contrary to expectation, males could produce less E₂ in their brains than females.     

pH-responsive movement of cucurbit[7]uril in a diblock polypseudorotaxane containing dimethyl beta-cyclodextrin and cucurbit[7]uril

[Structure: see text] A polypseudorotaxane consisting of cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7])/N,N'-(3-phenylenebis(methylene)dipropargylamine (PMPA), [2]pseudorotaxane, and 2,6-O-dimethyl beta-cyclodextrin (DM-beta-CD)/alpha,omega-bisazidopropylene glycol 400 [2]pseudorotaxane was synthesized using the "click" reaction. The polypseudorotaxane structure was maintained in aqueous solution over a wide range of pH values with the DM-beta-CD units contributing to increased solubilization of the polypseudorotaxane without dethreading. The pH-responsive movement of the CB[7] units in the polypseudorotaxane was also observed.     

A generalization of a theorem of Imai and its applications to Iwasawa theory

It is proved that, if $K$ is a complete discrete valuation field of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with residue field satisfying a mild condition, then any abelian variety over $K$ with potentially good reduction has finite $K(K^{1/p^\infty })$ -rational torsion subgroup. This can be used to remove certain conditions assumed in some theorems in Iwasawa theory.
