A practical synthesis of 4′-thioribonucleosides

A practical synthesis of 4′-thioribonucleosides starting from inexpensive l-arabinose is described. 1,4-Anhydro-2,3-O-isopropylidene-4-thioribitol, which was prepared by using a novel reductive ring-contraction reaction, was converted to the 5-O-silylated sulfoxides. The Pummerer-type thioglycosylation of the sulfoxides gave the 4′-thioribonucleosides stereoselectively.     

Grinding-induced equimolar complex formation between thiourea and ethenzamide

We prepared and characterized a grinding-induced equimolar complex of thiourea with ethenzamide. When thiourea and ethenzamide were co-ground at a molar ratio of 3 : 1, new powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) peaks were observed in addition to PXRD peaks of thiourea crystals. The optimum stoichiometry of the new structure was confirmed as 1 : 1 mol/mol. Effect of grinding time on the thiourea-ethenzamide equimolar complex formation was investigated by using PXRD, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The equimolar crystal structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements of the single crystal which was recrystallized from ethanol. It was found that the intermolecular hydrogen bond formations between thiourea and ethenzamide molecules contributed to the equimolar complex formation. The complex formation was not observed in the cases where benzamide, salicylamide or 3-ethoxybenzamide was co-ground with thiourea. 2-Alcoxyl benzamide structures should be required for the grinding-induced equimolar complex formation with thiourea.     

Site-selective photocycloadditions of 2-pyrones with electron-poor olefins and the derivation from the cycloadducts

Photosensitized cycloaddition of 4,6-dimethyl-2-pyrone ( 1 ) with methacrylonitrile ( 3b ) afforded two types of [2 + 2]cycloadducts, 4b and 6b , across the C₅-C₆ and C₃-C₄ double bonds in 1 , respectively. Photosensitized reactions of 1 with dimethyl maleate and dimethyl cyclobutene-1,2-dicarboxylate gave [2 + 2]cycload-ducts 4d, 4e across the C₅-C₆ double bond, in addition to [4 + 2]cycloadduct 9d or bicyclo[4.2.0]octadiene 10e . The photoreactions of methyl 2-pyrone-5-carboxylate ( 2 ) with 3b and 2-chloroacrylonitrile ( 3c ) gave [4 + 2]cycloadducts 5b, 5c in addition to [2 + 2]cycloadducts 11b and 11c across the C₅-C₆ double bond in 2 . The photocycloaddition mechanism was explained from results calculated by means of PM3-CI method. Namely, the site- and/or regio-selective products, 4, 5, 8, 9 and 10 were thought to come from the same site-selective radical intermediates in the case of electron-poor olefins. Pyrolysis and/or hydrolysis of the cycload-ducts 4e, 5b, 5c gave 5,6-dihydro-2-pyrone 12 or benzene derivatives.     

Method to determine quadruple points of a two-component system containing a simple hydrate phase and behavior of the system near these points

A method for determining quadruple points of a two-component system containing a simple hydrate phase is proposed. This method utilizes the quasi-static change of the system along three-phase equilibrium lines and was proved to be able to determine the quadruple points as accurately as the conventional method. By using this method, even though some preparation is necessary, a quadruple point can be determined in just a single experimental run. The behavior of the system near the quadruple points was also examined experimentally, for both the quasi-static and the irreversible change cases. At the quadruple points, the temperature and pressure of the system were kept constant for a while, as at the triple point of water. In both cases, the representative point of the state of the system passed through the quadruple point on a p–T diagram.     

Computer-aided structure elucidation methods

Computer-aided structure elucidation methodology is discussed. Major processes involved in computer-aided structure elucidation systems are partial-structure elucidation, structure generation, and structure examination. For the three representative systems CONGEN, CASE, and CHEMICS, these processes are examined. There are four necessary conditions for automated chemical structure elucidation systems: reliability, width of application, ease of modification and portability.     

Phase relations in NaxCrxTi8−xO16 at 1350 °C and crystal structure of hollandite-like Na2Cr2Ti6O16

Phase relations of rutile, freudenbergite, and hollandite structures were examined in the pseudobinary system NaCrO₂-TiO₂ (i.e., Na_xCr_xTi_8−xO₁₆) at 1350 °C. The hollandite structure was obtained in the composition range 1.7?x?2.0. The symmetry of the samples at room temperature was tetragonal for x=1.7 and 1.75, and monoclinic for x=1.8 and above. Single crystals of monoclinic hollandite Na₂Cr₂Ti₆O₁₆ were grown and the structure refinement has been carried out using an X-ray diffraction technique. The space group was I2/m and cell parameters were a=10.2385(11), b=2.9559(9), c=9.9097(11)Å, and β=90.545(9)° with Z=1. The Na ion distribution in the tunnel was markedly deformed from that in the tetragonal form. It was suggested that Cr/Ti ratios were different between the two framework metal sites.     

Epitaxial Growth of Sr x Ba1 − x Nb2O6 Thin Films Prepared from Sol-Gel Process

In this study, we prepared Sr _x Ba_{1 – x} Nb₂O₆ (x = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7) thin film on 0.75 wt% La doped SrTiO₃ (100) and (110) single crystal substrates. A homogeneous coating solution was prepared with Sr and Ba acetates and Nb(OEt)₅ as raw materials, and acetic acid and diethlene glycol monomethyl ether as solvents. The substrates were coated with the solution by spin coating method. As-coated thin films were heated from 973 to 1273 K in air. The grains of the thin film on La doped SrTiO₃ (100) were pillar shaped and arranged in right angle to each other. On the other hand, the grains of these thin films on La doped SrTiO₃ were pillar shape and arranged in one direction. The crystallographic relationship of the thin film between Sr _x Ba_{1 – x} Nb₂O₆ and substrate that the 130 and 310 direction of the thin film on the substrate were oriented with c-axis in parallel to the substrate surface. On the other hand, (hk0) phase diffractions of Sr _x Ba_{1 – x} Nb₂O₆ thin film on the substrate (110) were investigated in the XRD theta-2theta measurement. It is expected that the Sr _x Ba_{1 – x} Nb₂O₆ (x = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7) were highly oriented or epitaxial growing on La doped SrTiO₃ (110) single crystal substrate.     

Installation of carbon chain onto 2-cyclohexene-1,4-diol monoacetate

Alkylation of cyclohexenyl monoacetate 1 with R₂Cu(CN)(MgCl)₂ or RMgBr/CuCN (cat.) in Et₂O produced trans 1,2-isomers 4, while arylation and alkenylation of 1 was accomplished with lithium borates 5 and a nickel cat. to afford trans 1,4-isomers 3 selectively. Furthermore, several transformations of the products were carried out to demonstrate synthetic advantages of the present reactions.     

Thalidomide as a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor and its structural development

Thalidomide has been found to exhibit weak nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-inhibitory activity. Structural development studies of thalidomide showed that some N-2,6-dimethylphenylhomophthalimide analogs possess NOS-inhibiting activity.
