The use of public randomization in discounted repeated games

This paper presents an example where the set of subgame-perfect equilibrium payoffs of the infinitely repeated game without public randomization is not convex, no matter how large the discount factor is. Also, the set of pure-strategy equilibrium payoffs is not monotonic with respect to the discount factor in this example. These results are in sharp contrast to the fact that the equilibrium payoff set is convex and monotonic if public randomization is available.     

Fullerene as a standard sample for adjusting the NMR spectral resolution in multiple-quantum magic-angle-spinning experiments.

A method using fullerene for adjusting the NMR spectral resolution for multiple quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) experiments is proposed. To observe its (13)C MAS signal, it is not necessary to apply (1)H decoupling, unavailable with single-resonance MQMAS probes. Although (13)C T(1) of fullerene is rather long, a recycle time of 5 s in shimming yields its signal with sufficiently high sensitivity if setting the appropriate Ernst angles corresponding to magnetic fields. It is demonstrated that so-adjusted high resolution is reflected in the (87)Rb MQMAS spectra of RbNO(3).     

Associative desorption of adsorbed oxygen promoted by translational energy of incident O2 molecules

Effects of the translational energy of incident oxygen molecules on surface processes from dissociative adsorption to subsequent associative desorption on Pt(1 1 1) have been investigated by means of supersonic molecular beam scattering. The reaction rate of associative desorption increases with the incident translational energy. The enhanced associative desorption can be attributed to nonthermal diffusion of dissociated oxygen, promoted by the translational energy of incoming molecules.     

Isotropic transition of amphiphilic side-chain type liquid crystalline di-block copolymers

The effects of nitrogen (N₂) pressure on amphiphilic di-block copolymer, PEO₁₁₄-b-PMA(Az)₄₀, were investigated by scanning transitiometry. The isotropic transition temperature increased with the increase of pressure above 20 MPa. The hydrostatic pressure effects evaluated with the Clapeyron equation were smaller than the value obtained by mercury as a pressurizing medium because the amount of absorbed gas decreases the volume change at the isotropic transition.     

Precise determination of Pu isotopes in a seawater reference material using ID-SF-ICP-MS combined with two-stage anion-exchange chromatography.

In order to obtain the precise Pu isotope composition of Irish Sea water reference material issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA-381), we analyzed the activities of (239)Pu, (240)Pu and the atom ratio of (240)Pu/(239)Pu by a highly sensitive isotope dilution SF-ICP-MS method combined with two-stage chromatographic separation and purification. With a mean chemical yield of 65% for (242)Pu tracer, the experimentally established values for (239)Pu, (240)Pu and (239+240)Pu activities are in good agreement with the certified ones. For the (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio, we obtain a value of 0.2315 +/- 0.0008 with a high precision (RSD, 0.35%), which is much more precise than the information value of 0.22 +/- 0.03 (RSD, 13.6%) provided by the IAEA certification report. The precise determination of Pu isotopes in this seawater reference material will be useful for the validation of analytical methods for the study of radionuclides in the marine environment.     

High-throughput synthesis and characterization of Mg1−xCaxO films as a lattice and valence-matched gate dielectric for ZnO based field effect transistors

Using composition-spread technique, we have grown metastable Mg_1−xCa_xO solid solution films on ZnO layers by pulsed laser deposition. All the films exhibited (1 1 1) oriented cubic phase. Despite a large miscibility gap, no phase separation took place at growth temperatures up to 700 °C, whereas an optimal growth temperature was found at 400 °C in terms of the crystallinity. The composition-spread films were characterized by X-ray diffraction mapping technique. Both lattice parameters and diffraction intensity increased with increasing the CaO composition. The present isovalent heterointerfaces realized the perfect lattice-matching by properly adjusting the CaO composition, leading to particular interest for ZnO based field effect transistors.     

Quantum efficiency of GaAs/AlGaAs thin films with two-dimensional photonic crystals

The optical properties of GaAs/AlGaAs thin films with photonic crystals were investigated by measuring their photoluminescence spectra. The spectral intensities, lifetimes, and quantum efficiencies decreased greatly compared with those in blank material without photonic crystals. The quantum efficiencies in the material were also calculated from spectral intensities and lifetimes and the quantum efficiencies calculated from those two methods agreed with each other to some extent.
