Resonantly enhanced nonlinear conductance in long quantum point contacts near pinch-off

We report on a remarkable resonance in the differential conductance of long quantum point contacts (QPCs) that is observed as a precursor to regular quantized transport. This effect is increasingly pronounced in longer QPCs, in which the differential conductance may resonantly exceed 2e2/h. From a study of the experimental characteristics of this feature, we suggest that it may be associated with the formation of a well-resolved energy gap that opens dynamically as a result of enhanced many-body interactions in long QPCs.     

Local structure study of T′ cuprate superconductors

Undoped T′-type cuprates are believed to be charge transfer (Mott-Hubbard) insulators. Recent observation of undoped superconducting T′-type cuprates suggests half-filling weakly correlated metallic electron states (Tsukada et al.), which is against the fundamental picture. Here we report the local structures of undoped T′-(La³⁺,Y³⁺)₂CuO₄ and doped T′-(La³⁺,Ce⁴⁺)₂CuO₄ thin-film single crystals by polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAS). The in-plane (E//ab) polarized Cu K-EXAFS data shows a remarkable Cu-O bond distance displacement. The broadened Cu-O distribution suggests a large local lattice distortion in T′-type structures, which might influence the electronic structure.     

On the rate of convergence of solutions in free boundary problems via penalization

The rate of convergence of approximate solutions via penalization for free boundary problems are concerned. A key observation is to obtain global bounds of penalized terms which give necessary estimates on integrations by the nonlinear adjoint method by L.C. Evans.     

Simultaneous determination of erlotinib and its isomeric major metabolites in human plasma using isocratic liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and its clinical application

This study developed a method for the simultaneous determination of erlotinib and its isomeric major metabolites, OSI‐413 and OSI‐420, in human plasma using an isocratic liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Plasma specimens deproteinized with acetonitrile were separated using a 3‐µm particle size octadecylsilyl column. The m/z values of the precursor and product ions for the analytes were as follows: erlotinib, 394.2/278.2; and OSI‐413 and OSI‐420, 380.2/278.2. The total run time was 21 min and no peaks interfering with the analytes and internal standard (d₆‐erlotinib) in human plasma were observed. The calibration curves of erlotinib, OSI‐413 and OSI‐420 were linear over the concentration ranges of 10–3000, 2–500 and 2–100 ng/mL, respectively. The pretreatment recovery ratios were >86.1%. The intra‐ and inter‐assay precisions and accuracies were <12.7 and 89.0–108.9% for all analytes. This validated method was applied to the determination of plasma samples in lung cancer patients receiving 150 mg of oral erlotinib. The plasma concentration ranges of erlotinib, OSI‐413 and OSI‐420 were 373–2354, 15.7–379 and 2.5–43.6 ng/mL, respectively. In conclusion, the present method can be helpful for evaluating the plasma exposures of erlotinib and its major isomeric metabolites in clinical settings. 3,3-Dimethoxypropylsulfonyl Group: A new versatile protecting and activating group for amine synthesis

3,3-Dimethoxypropylsulfonyl (Dimps) chloride was prepared and used as a new versatile sulfonating agent for ammonia, primary and secondary amines to afford corresponding Dimps-amides in excellent yields. The resulting N-nonsubstituted and N-monosubstituted Dimps-amides, activated amines, were alkylated satisfactorily under new Mitsunobu conditions. The Dimps group was removed by treatment in aqueous solution under acidic followed by basic conditions. Furthermore, epilachnene, the defensive droplets from the Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis, was synthesized utilizing this Dimps methodology in short steps.     

Structural changes of poly-L-lysine in solution and lyophilized form

Two structural changes of poly-l-lysine have been studied by various spectroscopic techniques; one is a structural change of a random coil sample in solution to a mixture of alpha-helix and beta-sheet during rapid freezing in the lyophilizing process, and the other is a pressure-induced structural change from an alpha-helix to a beta-sheet structure for a lyophilized sample.     

Development of polysilane-supported palladium/alumina hybrid catalysts and their application to hydrogenation

Novel immobilized Pd catalysts, polysilane-supported palladium/alumina hybrid catalysts, have been developed. The catalysts showed high catalytic activity for hydrogenation, and could be used in an organic solvent or under solvent-free conditions.
