In this paper, an adsorption model that is based on the statistical mechanics approach was applied to study the saturation phenomena in adsorption to calculate the minimum pressure needed to attain the complete surface coverage on a physical adsorption. The fundamental integral equation, Theta(T)(Q)=integral N(Q)Theta(Q)dQ, for the calculation of the coverage degree of the surface was developed for an exponential distribution function, N(Q)=(m/RT)exp(-mQ/RT), and the representation of local adsorption sites is given by the Langmuir expression, Theta(Q)=b(0)C exp(Q/RT)/(1+b(0)C exp(Q/RT)). At high values of the pressure C, a solution of the fundamental integral equation was obtained by imposing the condition b(0)C>1. The expression for the saturation condition, b(0)C>m/(m+1), was obtained; that is, the saturation phenomenon is dependent on two parameters, correlated with the energetic heterogeneity and adsorption energy of the system. The pressure in the analysis of the cited expression shows that, for low m values (more heterogeneous systems), saturation is attained for b(0)C>m, while for m congruent with 1 (more homogeneous systems), the saturation is attained for b(0)C>0.5.  相似文献

We investigated the hypothesis that the strength of the activation of the intra‐S DNA damage checkpoint varies within the S phase. Synchronized diploid human fibroblasts were exposed to either 0 or 2.5 J m?2 UVC in early, mid‐ and late‐S phase. The endpoints measured were the following: (1) radio‐resistant DNA synthesis (RDS), (2) induction of Chk1 phosphorylation, (3) initiation of new replicons and (4) length of replication tracks synthesized after irradiation. RDS analysis showed that global DNA synthesis was inhibited by approximately the same extent (30 ± 12%), regardless of when during S phase the fibroblasts were exposed to UVC. Western blot analysis revealed that the UVC‐induced phosphorylation of checkpoint kinase 1 (Chk1) on serine 345 was high in early and mid S but 10‐fold lower in late S. DNA fiber immunostaining studies indicated that the replication fork displacement rate decreased in irradiated cells at the three time points examined; however, replicon initiation was inhibited strongly in early and mid S, but this response was attenuated in late S. These results suggest that the intra‐S checkpoint activated by UVC‐induced DNA damage is not as robust toward the end of S phase in its inhibition of the latest firing origins in human fibroblasts.  相似文献

The presence of substituting elements in magnetically ordered structure of crystals may change the shape of Mössbauer spectra of these materials. this fact was used to determine whether there is an ionic substitution of Ni, Co, Mn and Al for Fe in synthetic goethites. The approximate distribution function of the effective magnetic field in the Fe nucleusp′ (Hn) was obtained from the Mössbauer spectra. It was found that the mean value ofp′ (Hn) and its integral width can be taken as a measure of substitution in goethite.  相似文献

Enzymes cleaving the biopolymer adhesives of fouling organisms are attracting attention for the prevention of biofouling. We report a versatile and robust method to confine the serine protease Subtilisin A (or Subtilisin Carlsberg) to surfaces to be protected against biofouling. The approach consists of the covalent immobilization of the protease onto maleic anhydride copolymer thin film coatings. High‐swelling poly(ethylene‐alt‐maleic anhydride) (PEMA) copolymer layers permitted significantly higher enzyme loadings and activities than compact poly(octadecene‐alt‐maleic anhydride) (POMA) films. Substantial fractions of the immobilized, active enzyme layers were found to be conserved upon storage in deionized water for several hours. Ongoing studies explore the potentialities of the developed bioactive coatings to reduce the adhesion of various fouling organisms.

Using data from the EPA's EGRID and Clean Air Markets databases, we investigate the energy (technical) and emissions (ecological) efficiencies of 437 of the largest US electricity generators. We focus on fossil-fuel-based electricity generating plants because of their significant impact on industry environmental performance, especially with respect to air media emissions. Data envelopment analysis is used to determine the relative technical and environmental performance of these plants and whether win-win opportunities and end-of-pipe versus in-process (reactive versus proactive) practices relate to these efficiencies. The results show that win-win opportunities in terms of simultaneous technical (operational) efficiency and ecological efficiency do not appear to exist.  相似文献

An intensity curvature sensor using a Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) with three coupled cores is proposed. The three cores were aligned and there was an air hole between each two consecutive cores. The fiber had a low air filling fraction, which means that the cores remain coupled in the wavelength region studied. Due to this coupling, interference is obtained in the fiber output even if just a single core is illuminated. A configuration using reflection interrogation, which used a section fiber with 0.13 m as the sensing head, was characterized for curvature sensing. When the fiber is bended along the plane of the cores, one of the lateral cores will be stretched and the other compressed. This changes the coupling coefficient between the three cores, changing the output optical power intensity. The sensitivity of the sensing head was strongly dependent on the direction of bending, having its maximum when the bending direction was along the plane of the cores. A maximum curvature sensitivity of 2.0 dB/m−1 was demonstrated between 0 m and 2.8 m.  相似文献

We introduce a new two-parameter lifetime distribution obtained by compounding the generalized exponential and exponential distributions. We assume that the shape parameter of the generalized exponential distribution is a random variable having the exponential distribution. The shapes of the density and hazard rate functions are derived. The model parameters are estimated by maximum likelihood, and an application of the proposed distribution is presented.

In this paper we derive second- and third-order bias-corrected maximum likelihood estimates in general uniparametric models. We compare the corrected estimates and the usual maximum likelihood estimate in terms of their mean squared errors. We also obtain closed-form expressions for bias-corrected estimates in one-parameter exponential family models. Our results cover many important and commonly used distributions. Newly-developed data envelopment analysis techniques permit simultaneous consideration of ‘good and bad’ outputs in evaluating efficiency. We use these techniques to determine joint ecological and technical efficiencies of the 437 largest fossil-fueled electricity-generating plants in the United States.
