Toward the Exact WKB Analysis of the PII Hierarchy

We develop the exact WKB analysis of the P _II hierarchy introduced by Gordoa et al. [ 5 ] in this paper; our particular interest is in the relation between the Stokes geometry of a higher order Painlevé equation in the hierarchy and that of its underlying Lax pair. An important observation is that Stokes curves of the Painlevé equation may cross, reflecting the higher order character of the equation, and in a neighborhood of the crossing point an unexpected degeneracy of the Stokes geometry of the Lax pair may occur along a curved ray emanating from the crossing point.     

Charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase from a monoclinic single domain of NaV2O5 uniquely determined by resonant x-ray scattering

The present resonant x-ray scattering has been performed on a monoclinically split single domain of NaV(2)O(5). The observation of a critically enhanced contrast between V(4+) and V(5+) ions has led us to the unequivocal conclusion of the charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase of NaV(2)O(5) below T(c) = 35 K. In spite of the possible four types of configuration of the zigzag-type charge-order patterns in the ab plane (A,A',B and B'), the stacking sequence along the c axis is determined as the AAA'A' type by comparison with model calculations.     

Propagation of solitary ion acoustic waves in inhomogeneous plasmas

A WKB solution for the propagation of a solitary ion acoustic wave in a plasma with a density gradient is obtained.     

Critical electric fields of AlGaN in AlGaN-based vertical conducting diodes on -SiC substrates

We have succeeded in obtaining high critical electric fields from AlGaN layers using the p-InGaN/i-Al_xGa_1−xN/n-Al_xGa_1−xN (x=0–0.22) vertical conducting diodes grown on n-SiC substrates by low-pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The breakdown voltage (V_B) increases with increasing Al composition of the AlGaN layer. The corresponding critical electric fields are calculated to be 2.4 MV/cm for GaN and 3.5 MV/cm for Al_0.22Ga_0.78N. The critical electric field is proportional to the bandgap energy to a power of 2.5. This bandgap energy dependence is much stronger than that in the empirical expression proposed by Sze and Gibbons. The figure of merit, , increases with increasing Al composition, indicating the AlGaN-based p–i–n diodes are promising for high-power and high-temperature electronic device applications.     

Density-fluctuation-induced swelling of polymer thin films in carbon dioxide

We report an anomalous swelling of polymer thin films in carbon dioxide (CO(2)) which is associated (in both locus and form) with the density fluctuation ridge that forms along the extension of the coexistence curve of gas and liquid in the P-T phase diagram. Neutron reflectivity results showed that CO(2) could be sorbed to a large extent ( approximately 60%) in thin polymer films even when the bulk miscibility of the polymer with CO(2) is very poor. The anomalous swelling is found to scale with the polymer radius of gyration (R(g)) and extends to a distance approximately 10 R(g).     

Atomic level analysis of biomolecules by the scanning atom probe

Utilizing the unique features of the scanning atom probe (SAP) the binding states of the biomolecules, leucine and methionine, are investigated at atomic level. The molecules are mass analyzed by detecting a single atom and/or clustering atoms field evaporated from a specimen surface. Since the field evaporation is a static process, the evaporated clustering atoms are closely related with the binding between atoms forming the molecules. For example, many thiophene radicals are detected when polythiophene is mass analyzed by the SAP. In the present study the specimens are prepared by immersing a micro cotton ball of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in the leucine or methionine solution. The mass spectra obtained by analyzing the cotton balls exhibit singly and doubly ionized carbon ions of SWCNT and the characteristic fragments of the molecules, CH₃, CHCH₃, C₄H₇, CHNH₂ and COOH for leucine and CH₃, SCH₃, C₂H₄, C₄H₇, CHNH₂ and COOH for methionine.     

Studies on the chemical constituents of stem bark of Millettia leucantha: isolation of new chalcones with cytotoxic,anti-herpes simplex virus and anti-inflammatory activities

Four new chalcone derivatives (1, 4, 7, 10) were isolated from the stem bark of Millettia leucantha KURZ (Leguminosae) along with two known ones (2, 6) and five known flavones (3, 5, 8, 9, 11). Structure elucidation and unambiguous assignment of the isolates were achieved with the aid of 1D and 2D NMR extensive studies. Correlation of 10 to 4 was successfully done by reduction with Et(3)SiH/CF(3)CO(2)H. Moderate cytotoxic activity was observed in chalcones (1, 10), whereas dihydrochalcones (4, 6) showed moderate anti-Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) activity. Interestingly, flavone 8 showed significant anti-inflammatory effects inhibiting both cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and -2.
