CHOICE OF COATINGS FOR THE OPTICAL ELEMENTS IN THE IRRADIATION SYSTEM OF VACUUM-ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION ABOVE 50 nm

The spectral throughput of a vacuum-ultraviolet irradiation system at the SOR-RING facility was examined with various combinations of aluminum-and gold-coated optical elements in a 2.2-m modified Wadsworth monochromator. We found that the optimum was a combination of an aluminum-coated collimating mirror, concave grating, and plane deflecting mirror, and a combination of a gold-coated collimating mirror, concave grating and an aluminum-coated plane deflecting mirror in the wavelength regions 190-110 nm and 110-50 nm, respectively.     

Subincanadines A-C,novel quaternary indole alkaloids from Aspidosperma subincanum

Three novel quaternary indole alkaloids with an unprecedented 1-azoniatricyclo[4.3.3.0(1,5)]undecane moiety, subincanadines A-C (1-3), as well as two new indole alkaloids with a 1-azabicyclo[5.2.2]undecane moiety, subincanadines D (4) and E (5), and a new indole alkaloid with a 1-azabicyclo[4.3.1]decane moiety, subincanadine F (6), have been isolated from the barks of Aspidosperma subincanum Mart, and the structures of 1-6 and the stereochemistry of 1-3 were elucidated by spectroscopic data and chemical means.     

1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1-alkanols as silylcarbene equivalent

Silylcarbenes are generated by the pyrolysis of 1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1-alkanols with elimination of trimethylsilanol.     

Effect of TRX-liposomes size on their prolonged circulation in rats

Newly formulated cationic liposomes (TRX-liposomes) with four different mean diameters were injected into twelve male rats via the lateral tail vein in order to evaluate the effect of liposomal size on pharmacokinetic parameters. TRX-liposomes disappeared from the blood according to the one-compartment model and demonstrated maximum and minimum half-lives of ca. 14 h (mean diameter of 114.3 nm) and ca. 5 h (mean diameter of 285.9 nm), respectively. This prolonged half-life tended to decrease at the boundary of 114.3 nm mean diameter. The optimal size (114.3 nm) for prolonged circulation of TRX-liposomes was consistent with that of pegylated liposomes such as Doxil((R)), however, the half-life was different among these liposomes. The electric charge of the TRX-liposomal surface is assumed to be responsible for this difference. The results of the present study will be very useful in the design of long-circulating cationic liposomes.     

Photoelectron and penning ionization electron spectroscopic investigation of trimethylsilyl- and t-butyl-thiophenes

Penning ionization electron spectroscopy and CNDO/S calculations have been successfully applied to the analyses of the UV photoelectron spectra of 2- and 2,5-bistrimethylsilylthiophene and 2-t-butylthiophene. The relative intensities of the π type bands are greatly enhanced in the Penning spectra compared with those of the UV photoelectron spectra.     

LETHAL AND MUTAGENIC ACTION OF VACUUM-AND FAR-ULTRAVIOLET RADIATIONS ON DRY X174 PHAGE

Killing and mutation of dry X174 phages (amber mutant) were investigated with vacuum-UV (130, 150 and 190 nm) and far-UV (254 nm) radiations. The sensitivity to killing was greatest at 130 nm; the sensitivity (in terms of energy fluence) at 130 nm was about 17 times higher than that at 150 nm. The reversion frequency of amber mutants to pseudo-wild type at 190 nm was lower than at 254 nm. Comparison of the induction rate of revertants per survivor showed that mutagenicity after 130 nm radiation, which may raise the ionization process, and after X-rays was similar.     

Stereospecific synthesis of eight- and nine-membered cyclic ethers by Eu(fod)3-mediated cyclization of hydroxy epoxides

An efficient and versatile method for the stereospecific construction of α,ω-cis- and α,ω-trans-disubstituted eight- and nine-membered cyclic ethers was developed. Cyclization of the hydroxy epoxides promoted by Eu(fod)₃ proceeded via an S_N2 process and exo mode to provide the corresponding cyclic ethers in excellent yields.     

Unambiguous Determination of the Absolute Configurations of Acetylene Alcohols by Combination of the Sonogashira Reaction and the CD Exciton Chirality Method – Exciton Coupling between Phenylacetylene and Benzoate Chromophores

The CD exciton chirality method was applied to various phenylacetylene alcohols to determine their absolute configurations; the long axis polarized –^* transition (_max=252nm) of the 4-methoxyphenylacetylene chromophore couples with the transition (_max=257nm) of the 4-methoxybenzoate group to generate intense exciton split CD Cotton effects, from the signs of which the absolute configurations of phenylacetylene alcohols were unambiguously determined. As an extension of the results, a new methodology for determining the absolute configurations of acetylene alcohols having the HCCCH(OH)-moiety by combination of the Sonogashira reaction and the CD exciton chirality method has been developed and applied. Since the –^* transition of acetylene triple bond is located below 180nm, it is difficult to observe ideal bisignate CD Cotton effects due to the exciton coupling between acetylene and benzoate chromophores. To observe the ideal exciton split Cotton effects necessary for the unambiguous determination of absolute configuration, the terminal acetylene group was converted, by the Sonogashira reaction, to the 4-methoxyphenylacetylene moiety, which exhibits an intense –^* absorption band polarized along the long axis of the chromophore at 252nm. As a partner of exciton coupling, 4-methoxybenzoate showing a –^* band at 257nm was introduced into the alcohol moiety, and the benzoates formed showed intense bisignate CD Cotton effects, from the signs of which the absolute configurations of original acetylene alcohols could be determined in an unambiguous manner.
