Stereoselective one-pot three-component coupling approach towards the synthesis of the AC ring system of taxanes

The stereoselective one-pot three-component coupling reaction was accomplished by 1,4-addition of the protected cyanohydrin ether 9f to cyclohexenone 10g and subsequent addition of the resulting enolate to formaldehyde in high yield for the formation of the AC ring system of taxanes. We found that the bulky substituents at the 10-position in the A ring prevent the desired 1,4-addition. Similarly, the bulky trialkylsiloxy groups at the 4-position in the C ring prevent the 1,4-addition and electron-donating alkoxy groups at the same position induce the undesired retro-Michael reaction.     

Diastereoselective photochromism of a bisbenzothienylethene governed by steric as well as electronic interactions

Introduction of an asymmetric center to C-2 of one of the benzothiophene rings of bisbenzothienylperfluorocyclopentene results in a highly diastereoselective photochromic system. The stereogenic center bears a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, and a methoxymethoxy group. The steric as well as the electronic repulsions gave an 87-88% diastereomer excess in various solvents at room temperature with 80-85% conversion to the colored form. The enantioselective synthesis was also carried out. Upon photoirradiation in hexane, a change in optical rotation at 820 nm, where neither the open form nor the colored form absorbs light, was observed repeatedly.     

Antimony(III) Oxide Film on a Cellulose Fiber Surface: Preparation and Characterization of the Composite

Cellulose/antimony(III) oxide composites, Cel/Sb(2)O(3), with oxide loadings of 1.7, 5.4, and 9.2 wt% were prepared by reacting the precursor SbCl(3) reagent with cellulose in dry ethanol solution. The reaction of the Lewis acid and the cellulose fibers occurred at the~amorphous domains of the biopolymer, increasing the crystallinity degree of the composite compared with that of the untreated cellulose. The scanning electron microscopy images and metal mapping for all samples showed that the oxide film layer uniformly covered the fiber surfaces with no detectable agglomerates of the oxide particles. The synchrotron X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the antimony oxide film was obtained as a crystalline phase with orthorombic structure. The atomic ratios of O/Sb, determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, indicated that, for Cel/Sb(2)O(3) samples with 9.3 wt% loading, the fiber surface is nearly saturated by the oxide layer. The thermal stability of Cel/Sb(2)O(3) compared to that of untreated cellulose is practically unaffected. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.     

A Sol-Gel Synthesis for Thermally Stable Aniline/Silica Material

Aniline/silica sol-gel material was obtained. The aniline was immobilized on the silica surface using chloropropyltrimethoxysilane as bridge reagent. The base activator NaH was used to produce a fast SN₂ reaction between the base and the alkylorganosilane. The resulting modified silica was characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy using an oven cell. The organic coverage on the surface was proportional to the organic precursor concentration. The aniline/silica materials are thermally stable up to 300°C, in high vacuum.     

Intramolecular nucleophilic carbonyl trapping of alpha-ketenyl radicals by an amino group

Free-radical carbonylation of omega-alkynylamines with tributyltin hydride gives a mixture of alpha-methylene lactams and alpha-stannylmethylene lactams. Nucleophilic addition of an internal amino group to the carbonyl group of alpha-ketenyl radicals is proposed as the cyclization step. The subsequent unusual 1,4-H shift from the resulting 1-hydroxyallyl radical, followed by elimination of the beta-tributyltin radical leads to the formation of alpha-methylene lactams.     

Optically active 1,2-bis(1-arylhydroxymethyl) ferrocene: a new, efficient chiral ligand for scandium-catalyzed asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction

[reaction: see text] The Sc(OTf)3/FERRODIOL (2) complex was prepared at -78 degrees C in CH2Cl2 in the presence of 2,6-lutidine and MS 4A. The chiral scandium Lewis acid-catalyzed asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene (3) with 3-acyloxazolidin-2-ones (4) effectively produced the adduct (5) in a high yield with good selectivity, i.e., endo/exo = 90:10 up to 91% ee (endo).     

The influence of Na<Superscript>+</Superscript> on the anilinepropylsilica xerogel synthesis by using the fluoride nucleophilic catalyst

Anilinepropylsilica xerogel was obtained by using an appropriate organosilane and tetraethyl orthosilicate as precursor reagents. The gelation was carried out using HF and NaF as catalysts. The presence of Na⁺ (when NaF was used) resulted in a decrease in the final organic content of the materials. This effect was interpreted as an inhibition of the organosilane polycondensation possibly due to the Na⁺ interaction with the SiO^- groups of the hydrolyzed organosilane. The presence of Na⁺ also results in morphological changes in the xerogels.     

Catalytic,asymmetric Mannich-type reactions of alpha-imino esters bearing readily removable substituents on nitrogen

[reaction: see text] Catalytic, enantioselective Mannich-type reactions of alpha-imino esters bearing readily removable substituents on nitrogen are described. Several N-carbamate-protected alpha-imino esters, which are readily prepared from 2-bromoglycine esters using a polymer-supported amine, reacted with silicon enolates to afford the desired adducts in high yields with high enantioselectivity using a copper(II)-diamine complex. Easy deprotection of the product amine and transformation to free alpha-amino acid derivatives have also been demonstrated.
