Convenient green preparation of dipeptides using unprotected α-amino acids

Dipeptides and amides were obtained in high yields from N-carbobenzyloxy α-amino acids and 3-phenylpropanoic acid with unprotected α-amino acids via the corresponding mixed carbonic carboxylic anhydrides using ethyl chloroformate and triethylamine by an ecological and convenient method in which the protection of C-terminals is not needed.     

Analysis of visual perception of light emitting diode brightness in dense fog with various droplet sizes

Road signs must provide a conspicuous signal to a wide variety of drivers over a broad range of environmental and geometric conditions. Recently, there are an increasing number of applications in which light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used as the light source, including critical transportation signaling. In the presence of fog, the resulting visual signal is disturbed due to light scattering by airborne water droplets. By measuring LED brightness with human spectral sensitivity in various densities and various droplet sizes (10, 30, 50, and 100 μm), it is understood that the particle size distribution (fog droplet size) and density of fog does affect visibility in fog. The colored LEDs that contain a yellow component had high brightness evaluation, blue component had low brightness evaluation in all densities and different droplet sizes. The result in this paper can contribute to air and land traffic safety and the prevention of accidents.     

Determination of fluoxetine enantiomers in rat plasma by pre-column fluorescence derivatization and column-switching high-performance liquid chromatography

A column-switching HPLC method employing both octadecylsilica (ODS) and chiral columns with fluorescence detection was developed for the determination of enantiomer of fluoxetine (FLX), an antidepressant drug, in rat plasma. Racemic FLX was derivatized with a fluorescent reagent, 4-(N-chloroformylmethyl-N-methyl)amino-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-COCl) or 4-(N-chloroformylmethyl-N-methyl)amino-7-N,N-dimethylaminosulfonyl-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (DBD-COCl) and the enantiomeric separation of the resultant derivatives was examined on an amylose-based chiral column (CHIRALPAK AD-RH) in the reversed-phase mode. The derivative with NBD-COCl (NBD-FLX) showed a sufficient separation factor (a) and resolution (Rs) compared with that with DBD-COCl. Thus, FLX was derivatized with NBD-COCl and the resultant NBD-FLX was first quantified on the ODS column and then introduced to the CHIRALPAK AD-RH column via a six-port switching valve to examine the enantiomeric ratio. The intra- and inter-day accuracy (97.6-112.7%) and precision (1.47-10.60%) were satisfactory in the range 10-1000 nM FLX and the limit of quantification was approximately 10 nM. The absolute recoveries of FLX with hexane from rat plasma were in the range 87.5-92.2% (n = 3). The method was applied to determine FLX enantiomers in the plasma of rats administered FLX orally, and it was shown that the R-isomer was eliminated faster than the S-isomer.     

Pseudotetrahedral polyhaloadamantanes as chirality probes: synthesis,separation, and absolute configuration

Pseudotetrahedral, conformationally as well as configurationally stable 1-bromo-3-chloro-5-fluoro- (4) and 1-bromo-3-chloro-5-fluoro-7-iodoadamantane (5) (and some related compounds) were prepared by our recently devised phase-transfer catalytic halogenation protocol; the optical antipodes of 4 were separated by HPLC on chiral phase in ee > 99%, and the absolute configurations were assigned by matching observed and computed circular dichroism spectra. Structure 5 is the first chiral aliphatic hydrocarbon containing all stable (nonradioactive) halogens; its structure was proven by NMR spectroscopy and by X-ray crystal data. We emphasize that the combination of experiment and theory is very powerful in assigning absolute configurations even for molecules without typical chromophors, with small values for the optical rotation, and without an atom at the stereogenic center.     

UV dose measurements of photosensitive dermatosis patients by polycrystalline GaN-based portable self-data-acquisition UV monitors

We have developed a UV monitor with polycrystalline (poly-) gallium nitride (GaN) UV sensors and evaluated its performance from the viewpoint of its effectiveness for use with photosensitive dermatosis patients. The poly-GaN UV sensor is sensitive to UV light from 280 to 410 nm even without optical filters. The UV monitor is a portable self-data-acquisition instrument with a minimum detection level (defined as average UV intensity over 290 to 400 nm) of 2 microW/cm2 and can store UV dose data for 128 days. It allows easy measurement of four orders of magnitude of ambient UV intensity and dose from indoor light to direct solar radiation in summer. Trial use of the UV monitor by five xeroderma pigmentosum patients started in June 2000 and was carried out for 1 year. It was demonstrated that the UV monitor was useful in improving their quality of life.     

Enzymatic silicone oligomerization catalyzed by a lipid-coated lipase

A lipid (1)-coated lipase can catalyze the oligomerization of diethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS) in isooctane containing 2wt% water, where the polymerization occurs at the OH group of the coating lipid (1) in the enzyme cavity.     

Direct monitoring of DNA cleavages catalyzed by an ATP-dependent deoxyribonuclease on a 27 MHz quartz-crystal microbalance

Kinetic studies of enzymatic DNA cleavage reactions (the enzyme binding, hydrolysis along DNA strands, and then release of the enzyme from the completely hydrolyzed ssDNA) were carried out on a 27 MHz quartz-crystal microbalance.     

Oligo(octithienylene-diethynylene)s as unprecedentedly long conjugated nanomolecules

[reaction: see text] A series of oligo(octithienylene-diethynylene)s alternately composed of octithiophene and diacetylene units have been prepared by a random Eglinton coupling reaction among mono- and diethynyloctithiophenes. The largest compound isolated in the oligomeric series is comprised of twelve octithiophene units and eleven diacetylene units, and its molecular length reaches ca. 43 nm, which is the longest among single-component conjugated nanomolecules.     

Reversible control of enzymatic transglycosylations in supercritical fluoroform using a lipid-coated beta-D-galactosidase

The transgalactosylation rate catalyzed by the lipid-coated beta-d-galactosidase in supercritical fluoroform (scCHF3) can be reversibly controlled by changing temperature or pressure (reflecting polarity changes) without damaging enzymes.
