Heavy photon states in photonic chains of resonantly coupled cavities with supermonodispersive microspheres

We propose and demonstrate a "bottom-up" approach to constructing photonic structures for photon manipulation. Supermonodispersive polymer microspheres are used as building blocks and a size uniformity better than 0.05% could be obtained by sorting the spheres using spectroscopic methods. The spheres are positioned in a V groove on a silicon substrate and form a photonic chain with resonant coupling of the optical whispering-gallery modes. Photonic band modes are clearly observed in fluorescence and resonant scattering spectra, and an excellent agreement with a tight-binding model calculation is found. Heavy photon states and a group index as high as 40 are obtained.     

Ultrafast optical switching to a metallic state by photoinduced mott transition in a halogen-bridged nickel-chain compound

We demonstrate the ultrafast photoinduced Mott transition from a charge transfer insulator to a metal in a halogen-bridged Ni-chain compound by pump-probe reflection spectroscopy. Upon the irradiation of a 130-femtosecond laser pulse, the spectral weight of the gap transition is transferred to the inner-gap region. When the photoexcitation density exceeds 0.1/Ni site, the Drude-like high-reflection band appears in the infrared region, signaling the formation of a metallic state. The photogeneration of the metallic state and the subsequent recovery to the original gapped state occur within a few picoseconds.     

Direct addition of supercritical alcohols, acetone or acetonitrile to the alkenes without catalysts

The reactions of the alkenes with supercritical organic compounds under non-catalytic conditions were investigated. The H and CR₂OH, CH₂COCH₃ or CH₂CN of supercritical alcohols (CHR₂OH), acetone (CH₃COCH₃) or acetonitrile (CH₃CN) added to the CC bonds of alkenes form C-C bonds between the α-carbons of the supercritical organic compounds and the sp² carbons of the alkenes.     

PLQP & Company: Decidable Logics for Quantum Algorithms

We introduce a probabilistic modal (dynamic-epistemic) quantum logic PLQP for reasoning about quantum algorithms. We illustrate its expressivity by using it to encode the correctness of the well-known quantum search algorithm, as well as of a quantum protocol known to solve one of the paradigmatic tasks from classical distributed computing (the leader election problem). We also provide a general method (extending an idea employed in the decidability proof in Dunn et al. (J. Symb. Log. 70:353–359, 2005)) for proving the decidability of a range of quantum logics, interpreted on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. We give general conditions for the applicability of this method, and in particular we apply it to prove the decidability of PLQP.     

Dineutron Formation and Breaking in 8He

We investigate the structures of the 0⁺ states in ⁸He from the viewpoint of dineutron correlation, i.e., spatial correlation between two neutrons coupled to a spin singlet. In this paper, we mainly discuss the \({0^+_2}\) state which is a candidate for the two-dineutron condensate state. This state has one α and two compact dineutrons expanded widely with little correlation with each other to form a gaslike structure.
