13C NMR spectroscopic studies of the behaviors of carbonyl compounds in various solutions

¹³C NMR spectroscopic studies were performed for carbonyl compounds having a hydroxyl group, a carboalkoxy group, an acetoxy group, or a carboxyl group in various solvents with different polarities for observation of their behaviors of ¹³C NMR chemical shifts of carbonyl carbons in solutions. It was found that the chemical shifts of the carbonyl carbons in ¹³C NMR have good correlation with the empirical parameter for solvent polarities, E_T^N, depending on the structures. Inter- or intramolecular hydrogen bonding and dipolar-dipolar interactions appear to play a key role in this observation.     

A Practical Synthesis of 6-Acetylsalicylic Acid Methyl Ester

A new and efficient synthesis of the title compound is reported. The method includes a regioselective ortho-lithiation step in none polar solvents at an ambient temperature and the overall yield for 5 steps is more than 70% from a commercially available 3-hydroxyacetophenone.     

Statistical Prediction under an Order Restriction

In this paper, a statistical prediction problem under ordered location and scale parameters are considered. Double-shrinkage predictors are given which use all the available data and improve on single-shrinkage predictors, and hence the best equivariant predictors.     

Reaction of α,β‐unsaturated ketones with cerium(IV) salts in alcohol

Reaction of α,β‐unsaturated ketones with cerium(IV) salts or lanthanide triflates in alcohols gave good yields of the corresponding β‐alkoxy compounds. In the case of 2‐cyclopentenone and 2‐cyclohexenone, the 1,1,3‐trialkoxy acetal derivatives were obtained preferentially accompanied by β‐alkoxyketone, except 2‐cycloheptenone. However, in the reaction of 2‐cycloheptenone with alcohol using cerium(IV) sulfate (CS)‐molecular sieve, 1,1,3‐trialkoxy derivatives were obtained. Also, in the cases of 1‐penten‐3‐one, 4‐hexen‐3‐one and 3‐hepten‐2‐one, 1,1,3‐trialkoxy derivatives were obtained preferentially. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Synthesis of unimolecular reversed micelle consisting of a poly(L‐lactide) shell and hyperbranched D‐mannan core

A novel biodegradable unimolecular reversed micelle consisting of a poly(L ‐lactide) (PLA) shell and a hyperbranched D ‐mannan (HBM) core, that is, a chestnut‐shaped polymer (PLA–HBM), was synthesized by the polymerization of L ‐lactide on HBM with 4‐(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) as the catalyst. The obtained polymers were soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, and chloroform but insoluble in H₂O. The molecular weights of the PLA chain on PLA–HBM tended to increase with increasing polymerization time. The number of PLA chains on PLA–HBM could be controlled by the ratio of DMAP to the sugar unit in HBM. The obtained copolymer, PLA–HBM, acted as a unimolecular reversed micelle with an encapsulation ability toward the hydrophilic molecule. In addition, the entrapped hydrophilic molecules were slowly released from the core of PLA–HBM, and the release rate was accelerated by the breaking of the PLA chains of the shell when proteinase K as a hydrolase of PLA was used. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Convenient preparation of dichloromethyl alkyl ethers

Dichloromethyl alkyl ethers have been synthesized from alkyl formates (C1–C4) and oxalyl chloride in the presence of catalytic amount of N-methylformanilide. N,N-Dimethylformamide is not suitable for the reaction. The method has the advantages of simple experimental procedure, which is applicable to large scale synthesis, without use of harmful reagents.     

Palladium-catalyzed diastereoselective synthesis of homoaldol equivalent products

A palladium-catalyzed reaction of easily accessible 3-(pinacolatoboryl)allyl acetates and aldehydes provides facile access to synthetically useful homoaldol equivalent products with high diastereoselectivity. The reaction presumably proceeds via allylation of aldehydes with α-acetoxy allylboronates that produced in situ by reductive elimination from allylic gem-palladium/boryl intermediates.     

Hamilton-Jacobi Equations with Discontinuous Source Terms

We study the initial-value problem for a Hamilton-Jacobi equation whose Hamiltonian is discontinuous with respect to state variables. Our motivation comes from a model describing the two dimensional nucleation in crystal growth phenomena. A typical equation has a semicontinuous source term. We introduce a new notion of viscosity solutions and prove among other results that the initial-value problem admits a unique global-in-time uniformly continuous solution for any bounded uniformly continuous initial data. We also give a representation formula of the solution as a value function by the optimal control theory with a semicontinuous running cost function.
