Adaptive echolocation sounds of insectivorous bats, Pipistrellus abramus, during foraging flights in the field

Echolocation pulses emitted by wild Pipistrellus abramus were investigated while foraging for insects in the field. Similar to other European pipistrelles, the frequency structure during foraging varied. During the search phase, the bats emitted long shallow frequency-modulated pulses 9-11 ms in duration, whereas the maximum pulse duration of the bats approaching a large target wall in the laboratory was 3 ms. No significant difference was observed between decreases in the interpulse interval during these two approach flights. It is concluded that the bats use a long quasi-constant frequency pulse to find a weak echo from a small prey target.     

Global stability of a multistrain SIS model with superinfection and patch structure

We study the global stability of a multistrain SIS model with superinfection and patch structure. We establish an iterative procedure to obtain a sequence of threshold parameters. By a repeated application of a result by Takeuchi et al. [Nonlinear Anal Real World Appl. 2006;7:235–247], we show that these parameters completely determine the global dynamics of the system: for any number of patches and strains with different infectivities, any subset of the strains can stably coexist depending on the particular choice of the parameters.     

Hybrid Planar Wiggler with a Period of 2 cm for Higher Harmonic FEL Lasing

A hybrid planar wiggler with a period of 20 mm has been studied as the simplest one which gives the strong field including some higher harmonic components by selecting proper sizes of the ferromagnetic and the permanent magnet. Small gap length of the wiggler and small width of permendur satisfy these conditions to a certain degree.Gain analysis of FEL suggests that for high wiggler field of K>1 1.6, higher harmonic gains are improved primarily due to its strong field, and for low wiggler field of K< 1 1.6, they are mainly due to the modification of the wiggler field distribution.     

Oligomeric Alkoxysilanes with Cagelike Hybrids as Cores: Designed Precursors of Nanohybrid Materials

Well‐defined alkoxysilane oligomers containing a cagelike carbosiloxane core were synthesized and used as novel building blocks for the formation of siloxane‐based hybrid networks. These oligomers were synthesized from the cagelike trimer derived from bis(triethoxysilyl)methane by silylation with mono‐, di‐, and triethoxychlorosilanes ((EtO)_nMe_3?nSiCl, n=1, 2, and 3). Hybrid xerogels were prepared by hydrolysis and polycondensation of these oligomers under acidic conditions. The structures of the products varied depending on the number of alkoxy groups (n). When n=2 and 3, microporous xerogels (BET surface areas of 820 and 510 m² g^?1, respectively) were obtained, whereas a nonporous xerogel was obtained when n=1. ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopic analysis suggested that partial rearrangement of the siloxane networks, which accompanied the cleavage of the Si–O–Si linkages, occurred during the polycondensation processes. By using an amphiphilic triblock copolymer surfactant as a structure‐directing agent, hybrid thin films with a 2D hexagonal mesostructure were obtained when n=2 and 3. These results provide important insight into the rational synthesis of molecularly designed hybrid materials by sol–gel chemistry.     

Stepwise elongation effect on the two-photon absorption of self-assembled butadiyne porphyrins

Butadiyne-porphyrin dimer arrays, which were generated by complementary coordination of the central zinc atom to imidazolyl followed by metathesis, were elongated stepwise and their 2PA properties were explored.     

Synthesis and inhibitory effect on fat accumulation of (-)-ternatin derivatives modified in the beta-OH-D-Leu(7) moiety

An efficient synthesis of (-)-ternatin derivatives directed toward their SAR at the beta-OH-D-Leu(7) moiety and their biological activities against 3T3-L1 murine adipocytes are described.     

Stereoselective synthesis of benzyl-protected β-galactosides by propionitrile-mediated glycosylation

β-Selective galactosylation was studied using a series of 2-O-benzylated phenyl 1-thio-galactosides and glycosyl acceptors in propionitrile with BSP-TTBP-Tf₂O. The glycosylation enabled us to synthesize useful precursors of N-acetyllactosamine and core 1 O-glycoserine derivatives in a highly convergent manner.
