Photocontrol of lactate dehydrogenase-spiropyran collagen membrane

Collagen fibrils were modified with β-l-[3,3-dimethyl-6′-nitrospiro-(indoline-2,2′-2H-benzopyran)] propionic anhydride. The spiropyran collagen membrane showed reverse photochromism. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, E.C. 1.1.1.27) was entrapped in the spiropyran collagen membrane. The activity of the LDH-spiropyran collagen membrane decreased under visible-light irradiation, and then increased again after incubation in the dark. The optimum pH of the LDH-spiropyran collagen membrane was displaced toward lower pH values under visible-light irradiation. The activity change of the LDH-spiropyran collagen membrane under visible-light irradiation depended on the LDH content.     

Lasing conditions in recombining helium plasmas

Lasing conditions for He have been evaluated numerically. We have used a collisional radiative model to calculate overpopulation densities Δn_ij, which are defined as differences between population densities per unit statistical weight of the upper and lower excited levels i and j, respectively. Laser oscillations for the level pairs 2¹P-3¹S, 2¹P-4¹S, 2¹P-3¹D, 2¹P-4¹D, 3¹D-4¹F, 3¹P-4¹S, 3¹P-4¹D, and 3³P-4³S are possible when the electron densities are within well defined limits at low electron temperature (T_e = 0.1 eV). For level pairs of the singlet state, the inversion mechanism for He is the same as for H. Only collisional processes produce population inversion in the triplet level pair 3³P-4³S.     

Doping dependence of the vortex glass and sublimation transitions in the high-T<Subscript>c</Subscript> superconductor La<Subscript>2-x</Subscript>Sr<Subscript>x</Subscript>CuO<Subscript>4</Subscript> as determined from macroscopic measurements

Magnetization and ac-susceptibility measurements are used to characterize the mixed phase of the high-temperature cuprate superconductor La_2-xSr_xCuO₄ over a large range of doping (0.075 0.20). The first order vortex lattice phase transition line H_FOT(T), the upper critical field H_c2(T) and the second peak H_sp(T) have been investigated up to high magnetic fields (8 Tesla applied perpendicular to the CuO₂ planes). Our results reveal a strong doping dependence of the magnetic phase diagram, which can mainly be explained by the increasing anisotropy with underdoping. Within our interpretation, the first order vortex lattice phase transition is due to the sublimation (rather than melting) of the vortex lattice into a gas of pancake vortices, whereas the second peak is related to the transition to a more disordered vortex glass state.     

Spontaneous racemization and epimerization behavior in solution of chiral nitroxides

[reaction: see text] Enantiomerically enriched samples of chiral cyclic nitroxides with a 4-hydroxyphenyl group on the stereogenic center bearing the NO radical group undergo unprecedented spontaneous racemization and/or epimerization in aprotic solvents, which can be well accounted for by the multistep equilibrations involving planar quinoid intermediates.     

Possible one-dimensional 3He quantum fluid formed in nanopores

Heat capacity measurements have been made down to 5 mK for 3He fluid films adsorbed in one-dimensional (1D) nanometer-scale pores, 28 A in diameter, preplated with 4He of 1.47 atomic layers. At low 3He density, the heat capacity shows a density-dependent, Schottky-like peak near 150 mK asymptoting to the value corresponding to a 2D Boltzmann gas at high temperatures. The peak behavior is attributed to the crossover from a 2D gas to a 1D state at low temperatures. The degenerate state of the 1D 3He fluid is indicated by a predominantly linear temperature dependence below about 30 mK.     

Nickel-catalyzed arylcyanation of alkynes

A nickel catalyst coordinated by trimethylphosphine is found to effect the addition reaction of Ar-CN bonds in aromatic nitriles across alkynes to give rise to various beta-arylalkenenitriles.     

Supramolecular ion channels from a transmembrane bischolic acid derivative showing two discrete conductances

Bischolic acid derivative 1 linked by m-xylylene dicarbamate at the 3,3'-position was synthesized and the single ion channel properties were examined. Compound 1 showed two clearly distinct conductances, 9.5 (type A) and 25.3 pS (type B), under 500 mM KCl symmetric salt conditions, whereas various conductances, ranging from 5-20 pS, were observed in the tetramethylether analogue reported previously. Results indicate that the replacement of four methylether groups with hydroxyls at the 7, 7', 12, and 12' positions in the bischolic acid framework influences the stability of aggregated (supramolecular) ion channel structures. Ion permeability ratios (potassium/chloride and potassium/sodium) for each type of channel were also determined.     

Photorefractive effect in the relaxor ferroelectric material 0.91Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.09PbTiO3

The photorefractive effect in a nominally undoped 0.91Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.09PbTiO3 single crystal is measured. We report what is, to our knowledge, the first observation of the photorefractive effect in Pb-based relaxor ferroelectric crystals. The crystal is grown by the flux solution method. Then it is cut into a 2 mm x 4 mm x 8 mm piece and electrically poled along the [111] direction. The coupling constant of the two-wave mixing is 17 cm(-1), and the normalized time constant under 1-W/cm(2) illumination is 12 s at a wave-length of 476 nm. The effective trap density is calculated as 5 x 10(16) cm(-3) from the Debye screening length under the assumption of Kukhtarev's band-transport model. The dominant carrier is identified to be holes from the direction of two-wave mixing energy transfer.     

π-Face-selective hetero Diels-Alder reactions of 3,4-di-tert-butylthiophene 1-oxide. An excellent trapping reagent for thioaldehydes and thioketones

Hetero Diels-Alder reactions of 3,4-di-tert-butylthiophene 1-oxide (1) with thioaldehydes and thioketones take place exclusively, except the reaction with thiobenzophenone, at the syn-π-face of 1 with respect to the SO bond. The π-face selectivity was explained in terms of the extent of conformational changes of 1 that are brought about in the process to the transition states.     

Porphyrin hetero-dimer as charge separating system for photocurrent generation

Introducing a porphyrin bearing electron acceptor onto a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) using a supramolecular method to form a hetero-dimer increased the photocurrent value compared with using porphyrin without an electron acceptor.
