In this paper the affine connection approach will be used to calculate the elastic constants of nematic liquid crystals. Following this approach, which was originally conceived to compute the nematic viscosity coefficients, an expression for the elastic constants, without adjustable free parameters, will be formulated in terms of a temperature dependent metric, whose non‐isotropic part is proportional to the tensorial order parameter of the nematic phase. The dependence of the elastic constants on the scalar order parameter, in the geometry of the nematic molecules, and in the anisotropic part of the molecular interaction, will be determined. 相似文献

Adsorption and desorption of toluene on bare and TiO2-coated silica with a mean pore size of 15 nm under dry and humid conditions were studied using toluene breakthrough curves and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of toluene and CO2. Two TiO2/silica samples (either partially or fully covered with TiO2) were prepared with 50 and 200 cycles of TiO2 atomic layer deposition (ALD), respectively. The capacity of silica to adsorb toluene improved significantly with TiO2-thin film coating under dry conditions. However, toluene desorption from the surface due to displacement by water was more pronounced for TiO2-coated samples than bare samples under humid conditions. In TPD experiments, silica with a thinner TiO2 film (50-ALD cycled) had the highest reactivity for toluene oxidation to CO2 both in the absence and presence of water. Toluene adsorption and oxidation reactivity of silica can be controlled by modifying the silica surface with small amount of TiO2 using ALD. 相似文献

The first enzyme-catalyzed kinetic resolution of tert-butyl-3-hydroxy-4-phenylpyrrolidine-1-carboxylate is presented. Enzyme, solvent and temperature optimization resulted in a new resolution method with E = 40 enantioselectivity. The acetate derivative of the (+)-(3S,4R) enantiomer formed while the (?)-(3R,4S) isomer remained intact. Very good enantioselectivities (E > 200) were achieved in the enzyme-catalyzed alcoholysis of the racemic acetate in i-propanol and t-butanol where the (+)-(3S,4R) enantiomer was prepared in pure form (ee > 99.7%). Absolute configuration of the (?)-(3R,4S)-enantiomer was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. 相似文献

Since ancient times, various herbs have been used in Asia, including Korea, China, and Japan, for wound healing and antiaging of the skin. In this study, we manufactured and chemically analyzed a novel distillate obtained from a fermented mixture of nine anti-inflammatory herbs (Angelica gigas, Lonicera japonica, Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz., D. opposita Thunb., Ulmus davidiana var. japonica, Hordeum vulgare var. hexastichon Aschers., Xanthium strumarium L., Cnidium officinale, and Houttuynia cordata Thunb.). The fermentation of natural plants possesses beneficial effects in living systems. These activities are attributed to the chemical conversion of the parent plants to functional constituents which show more potent biological activities. In our current study, the distillate has been manufactured after fermenting the nine oriental medical plants with Lactobacillus fermentum, followed by distilling. We analyzed the chemical ingredients involved in the distillate and evaluated the effects of topical application of the distillate on ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin damage in Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice. Topical application of the distillate significantly ameliorated the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of the dorsal skin against photodamage induced by UVB radiation. Additionally, our current results showed that topical application of the distillate alleviated collagen disruption and reduced levels of proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 1 β expressions) in the dorsal skin against UVB radiation. Taken together, our current findings suggest that the distillate has a potential to be used as a material to develop a photoprotective adjuvant. 相似文献

The paper reports the development of cement clinker-supported nickel (with metal loadings of 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt% and 20 wt%) catalysts for glycerol dry (CO2) reforming reaction. XRF results showed that CaO constituted 62.0% of cement clinker. The physicochemical characterization of the catalysts revealed 32-folds increment of BET surface area (SBET) with the addition of nickel metal into the cement clinker, which was also corroborated by FESEM images. Significantly, XRD results suggested different types of Ni oxides formation with Ni loading, whilst Ca3SiO5 and Ca2Al0.67Mn0.33FeO5 were the main crystallite species for pure cement clinker. Temperature-programmed reduction analysis yielded three domains of H2 reduction peaks, viz. centered at approximately 750 K referred to as type-Ⅰ peaks, another peaks at 820 K denoted as type-Ⅱ peaks and the highest reduction peaks, type-Ⅲ recorded at above 1000 K. 20 wt% Ni was found to be the best loading with the highest XG and H2 yield, whilst the lowest methanation activity. Syngas with lower H2/CO ratios (0.6 to 1.5) were readily produced from glycerol dry reforming at CO2-to-Glycerol feed ratio (CGR) of unity. Nonetheless, carbon deposit comprised of whisker type (Cv) and graphitic-like type (Cc) species were found to be in majority on 20 wt%Ni/CC catalysts. 相似文献

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an infection that arises after endotracheal intubation affecting patients under intensive care. The presence of the endotracheal tube (ETT) is a risk factor since it is colonized by multispecies biofilm. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) could be a strategy to decontaminate ETTs. We verify if methylene blue (MB) associated with external illumination of the ETT could be an alternative to destroy biofilm. We performed an in vitro and ex vivo study. In vitro study was performed with P. aeruginosa biofilm grew over ETT for 7 days. After treatment, the surviving cells were cultured for 3 days and the biofilm was analyzed by crystal violet absorbance. Ex vivo study employed ETT obtained from extubated patients. aPDT was performed with MB (100 µm ) and red LED (λ = 640±20 nm). We quantified the biofilm thickness and used scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence technique to verify morphological and functional changes after aPDT. Our results showed that bacteria remain susceptible to aPDT after sequential treatments. We also attested that aPDT can reduce biofilm thickness, disrupt biofilm attachment from ETT surface and kill microbial cells. These data suggest that aPDT should be investigated to decrease VAP incidence via ETT decontamination. 相似文献
