Gas permeability and permselectivity of fluorinated polybenzoxazoles

Gas permeability and permselectivity are investigated for polybenzoxazoles from bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane (BAHHP) and aromatic diacid chlorides. Effects of thermal cyclization on the permeation properties are also investigated. The polybenzoxazole from BAHHP and 4,4′-(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropylidene)dibenzoyl chloride (HFDB) displays high performance for CO₂/CH₄ separation ( $ {\rm P}_{{\rm CO}_2 } $ = 6.1 × 10^?9 cm³ (STP) cm^?1 s^?1 cm-Hg^?1, and $ {{{\rm P}_{{\rm CO}_2 } } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{{\rm P}_{{\rm CO}_2 } } {{\rm P}_{{\rm CH}_4 } }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {{\rm P}_{{\rm CH}_4 } }} $ = 38 at 35°C). The polybenzoxazole from BAHHP and 2,6-naphthalene dicarbonyl chloride displays high performance for H₂/CO or H₂/CH₄ separation ( $ {\rm P}_{{\rm H}_2 } $ = 2.4 × 10^?9 cm³ (STP) cm^?1 s^?1 cm-Hg^?1, $ {{{\rm P}_{{\rm H}_2 } } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{{\rm P}_{{\rm H}_2 } } {{\rm P}_{{\rm CO}} }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {{\rm P}_{{\rm CO}} }} $ = 71, and $ {{{\rm P}_{{\rm H}_2 } } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{{\rm P}_{{\rm H}_2 } } {{\rm P}_{{\rm CH}_{\rm 4} } }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {{\rm P}_{{\rm CH}_{\rm 4} } }} $ = 250). Permeation properties for the polybenzoxazole from BAHHP and HFDB are close to those for a polyimide of similar chemical structure. Hydrosilylation of α,β-unsaturated nitriles and esters catalyzed by tris (triphenylphosphine)chlororhodium

The hydrosilylation of α,β-unsaturated nitriles and esters such as acrylonitrile, crotononitrile, cinnamonitrile, ethyl and methyl acrylate, ethyl and methyl crotonate and ethyl and methyl methacrylate using tris(triphenylphosphine)chlororhodium as a catalyst is described. The hydrosilylation of α,β-unsaturated nitriles provided α-adduct exclusively in high yield except in the case of trichlorosilane which afforded β-adduct with acrylonitrile. On the other hand, the hydrosilylation of α,β-unsaturated esters gave rather complex results. The selectivity of the reactions was dramatically affected by the substituent of the ester group and that on the β-carbon. Thus, the hydrosilylation of ethyl acrylate with triethylsilane afforded a β-adduct, but, that of ethyl crotonate using the same hydrosilane gave a 1,4-adduct exclusively. Possible mechanisms for these reactions are discussed.     

Non‐contact evaluation of the electrical conductivity of thin metallic films by eddy current microscopy

An eddy current microscopy technique to evaluate the electrical conductivity of thin metallic films in a non‐contact manner is reported. A narrow track formed in an approximately 100 nm thick Au film was prepared, and a Co–Cr coated magnetic tip was driven to oscillate above the track both with and without current passing through the track. Despite the absence of current, the electromagnetic interaction between the tip and the stray magnetic field from the track gave rise to a phase delay in the probe. This was due to an eddy current being induced within part of the track. Moreover, measurements of the phase change in the probe oscillation for different metallic films with thicknesses of about 100 nm found this to be proportional to the electrical conductivity of the film. Finally, the electrical conductivity of an Al film was evaluated using the eddy current microscopy technique. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Radical cascade reaction with 1,4-dienes and 1,4-enynes using 2-(iodomethyl)cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylate as a homoallyl radical precursor: one-step synthesis of bicyclo[3.3.0]octane derivatives

[reaction: see text] Radical cascade reaction with various 1,4-dienes and 1,4-enynes using dimethyl 2-(iodomethyl)cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylate as a homoallyl radical precursor smoothly proceeds through an iodine atom transfer mechanism to give functionalized bicyclo[3.3.0]octane derivatives in good yields.     

A pitch-synchronous analysis of hoarseness in running speech

A method of pitch-synchronous acoustic analysis of hoarseness requiring a voice sample of only four fundamental periods is presented. This method calculates a noise-to-signal (N/S) ratio, which indicates the depth of valleys between harmonic peaks in the power spectrum. The spectrum is calculated pitch synchronously from a Fourier transform of the signal, windowed through a continuously variable Hanning window spanning exactly four fundamental periods. A two-stage procedure is used to determine the exact duration of the four fundamental periods. An initial estimate is obtained using autocorrelation in the time domain. A more precise estimate is obtained in the frequency domain by minimizing the errors between the preliminary calculated power spectrum and the predicted spectrum spread of a windowed harmonic signal. Analysis of synthesized voices showed that the N/S ratio is sensitive to additive noise, jitter, and shimmer, and is insensitive to slow (8 Hz) modulation in fundamental frequency and amplitude. An analysis of pre- and postoperative voices of six patients with benign laryngeal disease showed that the N/S ratio for vowel /u/ in running speech consistently improved after surgery for all subjects, in agreement with their successful therapeutic results.     

Formation of cyclic organosilicon compounds via organopolysilyl anions starting from methoxymethyldisilanes. A mechanistic study

In the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium methoxide, sym-dimethoxytetramethyldisilane was converted into α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes, MeO(SiMe₂)_nOMe where n ? 3, at room temperature. On the other hand, similar treatment of the disilane in THF solution gave cyclic polysilanes, (Me₂Si)_n where n = 5–7. Decomposition of the disilane in the presence of diphenylacetylene afforded a trisilacyclopentene derivative under similar conditions. This compound was obtained also by the reaction between α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes and diphenylacetylene in the presence of sodium methoxide. These cyclic products most likely were formed via permethyl polysilyl anion intermediates derived from α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes. Also, the formation of α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes could be elucidated in terms of the mechanism involving the base-assisted, concerted nucleophilic substitution or stepwise substitution by silyl anions, rather than the successive dimethylsilylene (Me₂Si:) insertion reaction.     

Charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase from a monoclinic single domain of NaV2O5 uniquely determined by resonant x-ray scattering

The present resonant x-ray scattering has been performed on a monoclinically split single domain of NaV(2)O(5). The observation of a critically enhanced contrast between V(4+) and V(5+) ions has led us to the unequivocal conclusion of the charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase of NaV(2)O(5) below T(c) = 35 K. In spite of the possible four types of configuration of the zigzag-type charge-order patterns in the ab plane (A,A',B and B'), the stacking sequence along the c axis is determined as the AAA'A' type by comparison with model calculations.
