Unprecedented alkylation of silicon enolates with alcohols via carbenium ion formations catalyzed by tin hydroxide-embedded montmorillonite

The solid acid, tin hydroxide-embedded montmorillonite, catalyzes the unprecedented alkylation of various silicon enolates with primary, secondary and tertiary benzylic alcohols as well as secondary allylic alcohols. The acid catalysis of Sn-Mont was not only higher than that of the other ion-exchanged montmorillonites (M-Mont; M = H, Ti, Fe and Al), but also higher than that of the typical homogeneous acid catalysts such as BF₃·OEt₂, TMSOTf and TfOH.     

PREPARATION OF PHOTOFUNCTIONAL POLYMER THIN FILMS BY LANGMUIR-BLODGETT TECHNIQUE

Polymer LB films containing photofuntional groups were prepared by the copolymerization of N-dodecylacrylamide (DDA), which has an excellent property to form a stable monolayer and LB multilayerswith photofunctional monomers. Tris(2, 2'-bipyridine) ruthenium complex, Ru(bpy)_3~(2+), one of the most well-known redox-active sensitizer, was incorporated into the DDA copolymer. The photogalvanic effect based onthe photoinduced electron transfer using the ruthenium complex in the polymer LB monolayer was discussed.     

Palladium(II)-catalyzed carboxylation of benzene and other aromatic compounds with carbon monoxide under very mild conditions

Aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, anisole, and naphthalene were carboxylated by palladium(II) acetate catalyst with carbon monoxide in the presence of potassium peroxodisulfate in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. The aromatic carboxylic acids were formed in good yields; for example, the carboxylation of benzene with carbon monoxide proceeds quantitatively under the optimal conditions.     

An Efficient Method for the Conjugation of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Components by Solid‐Phase‐Assisted Disulfide Ligation

Chemical conjugation between hydrophilic and hydrophobic components is difficult because of their extremely different solubility. Herein, we report a new versatile method with a solid‐phase‐assisted disulfide ligation to overcome the difficulty of conjugation attributed to solubility. The method involves two steps in a one‐pot process: 1) loading of a hydrophobic molecule onto a resin in an organic solvent, and 2) release of the solid‐supported hydrophobic molecule as a conjugate with a hydrophilic molecule into an aqueous solvent. This strategy allows the use of a suitable solvent system for the substrates in each step. Conjugates of a water‐insoluble drug, plinabulin, with hydrophilic carriers that could not be prepared by solution‐phase reactions were obtained in moderate yields (29–45 %). This strategy is widely applicable to the conjugation of compounds with solubility problems.     

A new convergent route to aldohexoses from a common chiral building block

Synthesis and complexing properties of double armed diaza‐15‐crown‐5 and diaza‐18‐crown‐6 ethers having 4′‐hydroxy‐3′,5′‐disubstituted benzyl groups

A series of double armed diaza‐15‐crown‐5 ethers (9a ‐ 16a) and diaza‐18‐crown‐6 ethers (9b ‐ 16b) have been prepared by the Mannich reaction of 2,6‐disubstituted phenols with the corresponding N,N'‐dimethoxymethyldiaza‐crown ethers in benzene. The crystal structures of the diaza‐18‐crown‐6 ethers having iso‐propyl (10b) , tert‐butyl (11b) , and mixed methyl and tert‐butyl groups (12b) at positions 3′ and 5′ of the phenolic side arms were determined using X‐ray diffraction methods. Competitive transport by these ligands for sodium, potassium and cesium cations were measured under basic‐source phase and acidic‐receiving phase conditions.     

Hydrogen bond network-stabilisation of blue phases by addition of a chiral N-(10-hydroxydecyl)succinimide derivative and alkane diols

Blue phases (BPs) obtained by doping a commercially available liquid crystalline compound (4-butyl-N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)aniline (EBBA)) with (2R,3R)-2,3-bis(4-octyloxyphenylbenzoyloxy)-N-(hydroxydecyl)succinimide (1) were highly stabilised by the addition of a small amount of alkane diols. Especially, addition of only 0.5 mol% of octane-1,8-diol increased the BP–Iso transition temperature by 10 K and widened the BP temperature range up to 35 K. A model stabilisation mechanism based on the construction of a hydrogen bond network in each disclination zone in BPs was proposed.

The structures of a novel gastroprotective substance AI-77-B and its analogues AI-77-C, D, F and G, which are produced by Bacillus pumilus, are described. Five of the asymmetric centers of AI-77-B have S absolute stereochemistry confirmed by X-ray in combination with chemical studies.     

On global stability of an HIV pathogenesis model with cure rate

In this paper, applying both Lyapunov function techniques and monotone iterative techniques, we establish new sufficient conditions under which the infected equilibrium of an HIV pathogenesis model with cure rate is globally asymptotically stable. By giving an explicit expression for eventual lower bound of the concentration of susceptible CD4⁺ T cells, we establish an affirmative partial answer to the numerical simulations investigated in the recent paper [Liu, Wang, Hu and Ma, Global stability of an HIV pathogenesis model with cure rate, Nonlinear Analysis RWA (2011) 12 : 2947–2961]. Our monotone iterative techniques are applicable for the small and large growth rate in logistic functions for the proliferation rate of healthy and infected CD4⁺ T cells.
