Asymmetric borane reduction of ketones promoted by menthopyrazole‐zncl2 complex

The enantioselective reduction of ketones was accomplished by borane in the presence of pyrazole derivatives, particularly 2‐methoxymethyl‐3‐phenyl‐1‐menthopyrazole (8). The catalysis of zinc chloride makes it possible to lower the reaction temperature below 0 °C, and to promote enantioselectivity.     

Intramolecular 1,3‐Dipolar Cycloaddition‐Mediated Stereoselective Synthesis of Disubstituted Cyclopentane: A Simple Model for the Cyclopentane Ring System of Polycyclic Oroidine Alkaloids

We present a diastereoselective synthesis of disubstituted cyclopentane 8 having a nitrogen‐containing quaternary carbon center, which is found in axinellamine A ( 5 ) and related compounds. During this work, we found that the 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition product 24 immediately underwent intramolecular redox reaction at the newly formed morpholin‐2‐one moiety, thus affording disubstituted cyclopentane containing a tertiary amine ( 9 ) stereoselectively in good yield. The amine 9 was successfully converted into guanidine 31 , which corresponds to 8 , through iminium cation–enamine isomerization.     

Expansion of Photostable Luminescent Radicals by Meta-Substitution

Polychlorinated pyridyldiphenylmethyl radicals having substituents meta to the position bearing the carbon-centered radical (α-carbon) are synthesized. All of them are stable in ambient conditions in solutions and fluorescent in cyclohexane. The fluorescence of the radicals with bromo, phenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, or 2-pyridyl substituents are enhanced in chloroform, while the emission of the radicals with 2-thienyl or 2-furyl substituents are quenched in chloroform. DFT and TD-DFT calculations indicate that the first doublet excited states of the former are locally excited, while the first doublet excited states of the latter are charge transfer states from the π-electron-donating substituent to the accepting radical. The latter also show much higher photostability under 370-nm light irradiation compared with the first reported photostable fluorescent radical, (3,5-dichloro-4-pyridyl)bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical (PyBTM), with pronounced bathochromic shifts of the fluorescence.     

Synthesis and isomerization of conjugated oligomers containing azoimidazole unit

The Suzuki (for O1 – O3 ) and Stille (for O4 ) coupling polymerization of 2‐(phenylazo)imidazole bearing the benzyl protecting group at the 1‐position gave conjugated oligomers. The transformation from the neutral imidazole in the conjugated oligomer O2 , consisted of the alternating 2,5‐didecyl‐1,4‐phenylene unit, to the cationic imidazolium salt O2S was performed. Depending on the chemical structure of coupling partners, the absorption maximum of conjugated oligomers showed red shift or blue shift from that of the model compound M with the benzene ring at the 4,5‐positions. The absorption maximum wavelength of the cationic conjugated oligomer O2S showed a blue shift from that of the neutral conjugated oligomer O2 . The trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization of the azoimidazole unit in conjugated oligomers was observed by irradiating the light at 436 nm, and the conversion degree to the cis structure had a rough correlation with the maximum absorption wavelength of materials. The trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization in the film state was sluggish. On the other hand, the cis‐to‐trans thermal isomerization of the azoimidazole unit was confirmed and the absorbance returned to the initial state before the photoisomerization. The trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization of the cationic conjugated oligomer O2S required large energy, and the prolonged light irradiation might decompose the azoimidazole unit. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Proteome analysis of Oncorhynchus species during embryogenesis

To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying normal and abnormal development of two salmonids, masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) and rainbow trout (O. mykiss), we used two-dimensional (2-D) electrophoresis to construct a series of 2-D maps during the embryonic period. We identified all visible protein spots on the 2-D map by assigning numbers for masu salmon and rainbow trout, and we determined N-terminal sequences of proteins for one hundred of the spots, that appear at very high concentrations in the whole embryos of masu salmon and rainbow trout. We also characterized embryonic stages according to the periods of appearance of spots. Most of the N-terminal sequences were identical or at least highly similar to partial sequences reported for vitellogenin (Vtg) of O. mykiss. A potential proteolytic processing of Vtg for rainbow trout is discussed in relation to the time of appearance and relative position of Vtg fragments within the complete protein sequence.     

Heterogeneous continuous flow synthetic system using cyclohexane-based multiphase electrolyte solutions

The discovery that supporting electrolytes can be effectively confined in typical organic solvents in a c-Hex-based multiphase electrolyte solution has led to the development of a novel heterogeneous continuous flow synthetic system. PTFE fiber functions as a separation filter that can efficiently isolate the c-Hex phase from multiphase electrolyte solutions. This system has demonstrated both electrochemical solvating and carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. Hydrophobic substrates can be introduced into the reactor as c-Hex solutions, which are then electrochemically transformed into the target hydrophobic products that pass through the PTFE fiber as c-Hex solutions.     

Variable Lebesgue norm estimates for BMO functions. II

The paper concerns characterization of BMO in terms of Banach function spaces. In particular, we are interested in characterizing BMO by using the variable Lebesgue norm.     

Infinitely many solutions for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with general nonlinearity

We prove the existence of infinitely many solutions for

$$\begin{aligned} - \Delta u + V(x) u = f(u) \quad \text { in } \mathbb {R}^N, \quad u \in H^1(\mathbb {R}^N), \end{aligned}$$

where V(x) satisfies \(\lim _{|x| \rightarrow \infty } V(x) = V_\infty >0\) and some conditions. We require conditions on f(u) only around 0 and at \(\infty \).

     

On the multiple existence of semi-positive solutions for a nonlinear Schrödinger system

The paper concerns multiplicity of vector solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger systems, in particular of semi-positive solutions. New variational techniques are developed to study the existence of this type of solutions. Asymptotic behaviors are examined in various parameter regimes including both attractive and repulsive cases.
