Polarization-dependent carrier dynamics in a passive InAs/InP quantum dot waveguide

We investigate carrier dynamics in a passive InAs/InP quantum dot (QD) waveguide using 255 fs optical pulses at a central wavelength of 1568 nm. We observe strong anisotropy of absorption saturation for different polarizations. Pump-probe measurements indicate the presence of carrier relaxation dynamics on a timescale in the order of tens of picoseconds due to cascaded relaxation of carriers generated by two-photon absorption (TPA) from the bulk region to the QDs via the wetting layer. These relaxation timescales are much longer than in QD amplifiers. Our observations are supported by a rate-equation model which includes TPA, showing good agreement with the pump-probe measurements.

Synchronization of a class of chaotic dynamic systems with controller gain variations

In this paper, the nonfragile control problem for synchronization of a class of chaotic dynamical systems with controller gain variations is studied. Using the Lyapunov method and LMI (linear matrix inequality) technique, a criterion for the existence of the nonfragile controller for synchronization is derived in terms of LMI. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, the control problem is applied to Genesio chaotic system.     

Assessment of thermal expansion coefficient of methylsilsesquioxane thin film

For the methylsilsesquioxane film whose optical birefringence is almost zero, it was recently reported that its vertical thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) was approximately one order of magnitude larger than the lateral CTE. Though the birefringence is not an absolute predictor of anisotropic behavior, the discrepancy in both the CTEs was so remarkable that it was essential to investigate whether the anisotropy was intrinsic property or not. If the effect of Poisson's ratio is considered in the calculation of the vertical CTE and when elastic modulus measured by surface acoustic wave spectroscopy is used in the assessment of the lateral CTE, both the CTEs are coincident with each other. Therefore, it can be concluded that the discrepancy in the CTEs can be attributed to a higher in‐plane polymer chain orientation but it can also arise from the misleadingly assumed modulus and Poisson's ratio. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Alloy formation in mechanically activated mixtures

The physical mixtures of hydroxocarbonates of Cu and Ni with aluminium were activated using a laboratory planetary mill. The chemical reactions and alloy formations as the effects of grinding were followed by the phase analysis of solid products based on the thermogravimetry and X-ray diffractometry. Experimental evidence indicates that the nature of reactions and products of mechanical activation was dependent on the amount of aluminium and time of grinding. <Superscript>40</Superscript>K activities and potassium concentrations in tobacco samples of Mexican cigarettes

Nine brands of tobacco cigarettes manufactured and distributed in the Mexican market were analyzed by γ-spectrometry to certify their non-artificial radioactive contamination. Since natural occurring radioactive materials (NORM) ⁴⁰K, ²³²Th, ²³⁵U, and ²³⁹U (and decay products from the latter three nuclides) are the main sources for human radiation exposure, the aim of this work was to determine the activity of ⁴⁰K and potassium concentration. Averages of ⁴⁰K and potassium concentration were of 1.29±0.18 Bq·g⁻¹, and 4.0±0.57%. The annual dose equivalents to the whole body from ingestion and inhalation of 26 Bq ⁴⁰K were 0.23 μSv and 15.8 μSv, respectively. The corresponding 50 years committed dose equivalents was 0.23 μSv. The total committed dose to the lungs due to inhalation of ⁴⁰K in tobacco was 16 μSv. Potassium concentrations obtained in this work were in the same range of those obtained by INAA, so showing that the used technique is acute, reproducible, and accessible to laboratories equipped with low background scintillation detectors.     

Development of a Millimeter Wave Compact Equipment for NDT of Materials

We developed a compact equipment working at 94 GHz to replace the commonly used network analyzer for nondestructive testing of materials. The compact equipment was designed to measure the variations in the amplitude and phase of the reflected signal from the material relative to a reference signal. A good accuracy of the amplitude and phase measurement of the equipment was obtained in the confirmative experiments. The distribution of a drop of water in a wood plate is clearly visible in the millimeter wave images obtained by the amplitude and phase measurement.     

Ultrasonic investigation of amorphous carbon in various frequencies at low temperatures from 2.1 to 300 K

Using pulse echo overlap measurement, the elastic behavior of amorphous carbon has been studied at ambient and low temperatures. The smaller ratio B/G of the bulk modulus to shear modulus and smaller Poisson's ratio σ at room temperature indicate that there is an intrinsic stiffening of transverse acoustic phonons in the amorphous carbon. The acoustic velocity and attenuation for longitudinal modes have been measured between 2.1 and 300 K at three frequencies of 7, 21 and 35 MHz, respectively. Their frequency and temperature dependence are observed. The elastic constant C₁₁ increases with decreasing temperature and show enhanced stiffening at low temperatures. In the 130-220 K region, the abnormal change and effect of longitudinal velocity and attenuation with temperature and frequency, and a phase transition associated with structure relaxations are discussed.     

考虑通货膨胀与最长顾客等待时间的变质性物品的库存模型

本文建立了一种考虑通货膨胀与时间价值的变质性物品的库存模型,在模型中允许短缺发生且拖后的需求速率与在缺货期间已经发生的缺货量有关.和已有相关模型的主要区别在于本模型把一个可重复的订货周期内的最大平均利润的净现值作为目标函数,且增加了在缺货期间最长顾客等待时间的限制,以确保库存系统拥有较高的服务水平.然后讨论了模型最优解的存在性与唯一性,并提供了寻求模型整体最优解的算法.最后用实例说明了此模型在实际中的应用.
