MR microscopy of micron scale structures

Magnetic resonance (MR) microscopy of up to 1–5-μm resolutions have been reported previously. The tested phantom structures, however, had widths one order of magnitude bigger than the reported resolutions, e.g., spherical beads or capillary tubes of tens-of-micron diameters or wall thicknesses have been imaged. In this study, we fabricated structures having a few micron widths on a silicon wafer and imaged them using our 1-μm-resolution MR microscopy at 14.1 T. Micron scale width structures were, for the first time, resolved by MR microscopy.     

Asymmetric Cyclic Phosphorothonamides Containing Substituted Pyridine

In order to find high-acitivity and low-toxicity pesticidal lead compounds, a type of novel, asymmetric cyclic phosphorothonamides containing substituted pyridine were synthesized via the condensation reactions of 2-chloro-4-substitutedphenyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphinane 2-sulfide with 3-aminomethylpyridine. The cis and trans isomers of the products were isolated by column chromatography on silica gel. The structures of the products were characterized by ¹ H NMR, ³¹ P NMR, MS, and elemental analyses. The configuration of 3a was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results of the preliminary bioassay showed that the new compounds possess potential fungicidal activities.     

Synthesis of some novel 5-substituted benzamido-6-arylamino-pyrazolo[3,4-D]pyrimidin-4-one derivatives for herbicidal activity

Abstract

Sixteen novel 3-methylthio-5-substituted benzamido-6-arylamino-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4 (5H)-one derivatives (4a–p) were successfully synthesized from iminophosphoranes, aryl isocyanate, and substituted benzoylhydrazine. The structures of the title compounds were elucidated by FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and HRMS. Herbicidal activity of the compounds 4a–p against Brassica napus (rape), Echinochloa crusgalli (barnyard grass), Cucumis sativus (cucumber), and Triticum aestivum (wheat) were determined. The results showed that 5-(2-chlorobenzamido)-6-phenylamino-3-methylthio-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4 (5H)-one (4c) displayed remarkable inhibition activity against the stalk and root of rape with 100% inhibition rate at the dosages of 10?mg/L and 100?mg/L, and 5-(4-nitrobenzamido)-6-phenylamino-3-methylthio-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4 (5H) -one (4d) exhibited excellent activity against the stalk and root of barnyard grass with 100% inhibition rate at the same dosages.     

Moisture absorption and diffusion in an underfill encapsulant at T > T g and T < T g

Moisture absorption and diffusion behavior of an underfill material used for electronic packaging with a glass transition temperature (T _g) slightly above room temperature have been investigated by the sorption thermogravimetric analysis technique. It has been found that moisture diffusion in this material follows the Fick’s diffusion model, and moisture absorption–desorption is reversible and repeatable. Based on moisture-induced mass gain versus time curve, the diffusion constant can be determined. It was found that below T _g, moisture diffusivity exhibits an Arrhenius temperature dependence, which changes to a different Arrhenius temperature dependence as the temperature increases to T > T _g. The change in diffusivity from T < T _g to T > T _g is accompanied by a significant decrease in the energy barrier for moisture diffusion. Results shed light on the change in moisture diffusion in polymer-based materials in the glassy and the rubbery state.     

Coagulation behaviors and in-situ flocs characteristics of composite coagulants in cyanide-containing wastewater: Role of cationic polyelectrolyte

In this paper,composite coagulants(PFS,PFSC05,PFSC1 and PFSC5),prepared by mixing polyferric sulfate(PFS)and cationic polyelectrolyte(CP)coagulants with different weight percent(Wp)of CP(Wp=0%,0.5%,1%and 5%,respectively),were adopted to treat cyanide-containing wastewater.PFSC5 exhibited superior coagulation performances at optimal conditions:the removal of total cyanide(TCN)and chemical oxygen demand(COD)was 95%–97%and 50%–55%,respectively.The effects of CP on the properties and structure of flocs were investigated by laser diffraction instrument and small-angle laser light scattering(SALLS),respectively.The results show that the flocs of PFSC5 have higher growth rate,higher strength factor and lower recovery factor than other flocs.They are also much denser and more uniform owing to the higher fractal dimension(Df)and less microflocs(10–100 m).Furthermore,the dense structure of the PFSC5 flocs can be restored after shear and is more resistant to hydraulic conditions.Particularly,detailed morphology evolution of the flocs was in-situ detected by on-line particle imaging.Due to strong ionic strength in wastewater,the CP in PFSC5 plays a significant role of adsorption,while the main mechanism of CP is electrostatic patch aggregation during the PFSC05 systems.     

Highly selective synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes from methane in a coupled Downer-turbulent fluidized-bed reactor

For the synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) from CH₄ over a Fe/MgO catalyst, we proposed a coupled Downer-turbulent fluidized-bed (TFB) reactor to enhance the selectivity and yield (or production rate) of SWCNTs. By controlling a very short catalyst residence time (1–3 s) in the Downer, only part of Fe oxides can be reduced to form Fe nano particles (NPs) available for the growth of SWCNTs. The percentage of unreduced Fe oxides increased and the yield of SWCNTs decreased accordingly with the increase of catalyst feeding rate in Downer. SWCNTs were preferentially grown on the catalyst surface and inhibited the sintering of the Fe crystallites which would be formed thereafter in the downstream TFB, evidenced by TEM, Raman and TGA. The coupled Downer-turbulent fluidized-bed reactor technology allowed higher selectivity and higher production rate of SWCNTs as compared to TFB alone.     

Organic Reactions in Ionic Liquids: Ionic Liquid Ethylammonium Nitrate–Promoted Knoevenagel Condensation of Meldrum's Acid With Aromatic Aldehydes

The Knoevenagel condensation of Meldrum's acid with aromatic aldehydes proceeded efficiently in a reusable ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate, at room temperature in the absence of any catalyst with high yields.     

Noncovalent Functionalization of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes by Anionic Polymer Poly(Sodium 4‐Styrenesulfonate) in Water

We have found that polymer poly (sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate) (PSS) is a facile and effective polymer to assist in the dispersion of MWCNTs in aqueous solutions. With the increase of the concentration of PSS solutions, the dispersibility of MWCNTs in PSS solution increases. Cast films of MWCNTs/PSS (2 wt.%) on GC electrode show a typical redox couple at scan rate of 1 V/s in phosphate buffer solution, indicating good electrical conductivity.
