Low-temperature 15N NMR spectra of reduced 1,3-heterocyclic systems

The ¹⁵N NMR spectra of the O-inside cis-fused conformer of perhydropyrido[1,2-c][1,3]thiazine shows a shielding of the nitrogen of 23.0 ppm relative to the trans-fused conformer. In contrast, ¹⁵N shifts for the cis-and trans-fused conformers of perhydro-oxazolo[3,4-a]pyridine and perhydrothiazolo[3,4-a]pyridine show corresponding shieldings of only 0.6 and 2.5 ppm, respectively.     

A mobile computerized laser radar system for observing rapidly varying meteorological phenomena

A high repetition, mobile laser radar system with a computerized real-time data acquisition and display system is described. Signal-to-noise levels of the system are compared with theoretical values, and it is found that they are affected by the shot noise in the system. An example of a stack plume observation is also presented to show the performance of the system.     

Evaluation of the signal intensity of induced peaks in indirect photometric detection of nonelectrolytes in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

Summary We have experimentally evaluated the equation representing the peak area of induced peaks in indirect photometric detection of nonelectrolytes as a function of the amount and concentration of the analyte and the visualizing agent and their capacity factor, the phase ratio of the column and the absorptivity and the pathlength of detection. Aliphatic alcohols and hydrocarbons were used as the test analytes. Most of the analytes behaved according to the relationship expressed by the equation.     

Estimation of a common parameter for pooled samples from the uniform distributions

Summary The problem to estimate a common parameter for the pooled sample from the uniform distributions is discussed in the presence of nuisance parameters. The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and others are compared and it is shown that the MLE based on the pooled sample is not (asymptotically) efficient.     

Electrical and optical properties of CuIn5S8 single crystals

Summary Several transport and optical properties have been studied onn-type CuIn₅S₈ single crystals. The energy gap at 0 K was determined from the electrical measurements to be 1.4 eV. An anisotropy of the magnetoresistance effect was found and it was suggested that the minima of the conduction band were located at points along the [100] directions ink-space. An optical-absorption band was found in an infrared region of (1÷1.6) μm and was attributed to the transitions from the lowest conduction band situated along the [100] directions to an upper conduction band. Study of structural relaxation of Ni78Si8B14 metallic glass by electrical resistivity and thermal expansion measurements

Electrical resistivity and thermal expansion measurements were made to elucidate the structural relaxation of Ni₇₈Si₈B₁₄ metallic glass, especially, the topological short range ordering. The decrease of the resistivity and the increase of its temperature coefficient were observed, and these changes due to the structural relaxation were discussed on the basis of the extended Ziman theory for metallic glasses proposed by Nagel. The densification of about 0.25% and the decrease of 4% in the thermal expansion coefficient were observed in the considerably relaxed sample. The topological short range ordering in Ni₇₈Si₈B₁₄ metallic glass occurs rapidly at the annealing temperature above 200°C.     

Stability in ecological microcosm

In attempt to clarify the significance of interspecific interactions in evolutionary ecology, the growth characteristics of bacterial populations sampled from ecological microcosms which act as fairly realistic models of natural ecosystems were investigated, with a particular emphasis on the ability of a system to remain reasonably stable in the genetic composition in spite of the occurrences of various mutants from native strains. Newly-emerged mutants in a community are inhibited in their multiplication, or excluded by a network of many elementary interactions between the different species of the populations, thus preserving the traits of the parental strains in a community. The interactions in the form of a network may be viewed as evidence for a maintenance of stability in a community.
