PHOTORECEPTOR PIGMENT IN Blepharisma: H+ RELEASE FROM RED PIGMENT

In faded cells of Blepharisma kept in a standard saline solution containing bacteria which had been cultured on agar plates containing glucose and polypepton, threshold light intensity for step-up photophobic response elevated. This result suggests that red pigment (blepharismin) contained in Blepharisma cells is involved in the step-up photophobic response. The pH of the aqueous solution of the red pigment was found to decrease when light was applied, indicating that the pigment releases H⁺ in response to light stimulation. However, faded pigment preparation by light irradiation did not show pH decrease. In the living cells faded by light irradiation, threshold light intensity for the step-up photophobic response was raised. Results suggest that H⁺ release from the red pigment induced by light irradiation might be responsible for the step-up photophobic response of the cells.     

New sterols from two edible mushrooms, Pleurotus eryngii and Panellus serotinus

Two edible mushrooms, Pleurotus eryngii and Panellus serotinus, have been investigated chemically. Two new sterols, 5alpha,9alpha-epidioxy-8alpha,14alpha-epoxy-(22E)-ergosta-6,22-dien-3beta-ol (1) and 3beta,5alpha-dihydroxyergost-7-en-6-one (2), have been isolated from P. eryngii, together with six known ones (3-8). Compound 1 was also isolated from P. serotinus. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectral data.     

Enhanced phosphorescence in intramolecular exciplex systems

Phosphorescence behavior of the series of compounds, (carbazole)-(CH₂)_n-(terephthalic acid methyl ester), which show intramolecular exciplex emission, has been studied in a rigid medium at 77 K. The phosphorescence of the carbazole moiety is enhanced by electron transfer fluorescence quenching of the carbazole residue in accord with the degree of quenching.     

Asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimate in the first order autoregressive process

Summary In this paper we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) based onT observations from the first order Gaussian process up to the term of orderT ⁻¹. The expansion is used to compare with a generalized estimate including the least square estimate (LSE) , based on the asymptotic probabilities around the true value of the estimates up to the terms of orderT ⁻¹. It is shown that (or the modified MLE ) is better than (or the modified estimate ). Further, we note that does not attain the bound for third order asymptotic median unbiased estimates.     

Studies of micro-brownian motion of a polymer chain by the fluorescence polarization method. II. Segmental motions in concentrated polymer solutions

The fluorescence polarization method has been used to study the micro-Brownian motion of a terminal segement of a polymer chain in concentrated solutions. A new apparatus for determining the fluorescence intensity and its polarization degree was designed. By using this apparatus, the rotational relaxation time 〈ρ〉 of the terminal segment of the fluorescent conjugates of polyacrylamide in aqueous polyacrylamide solutions was obtained as a function of polymer concentration from 0 to 65%, molecular weight of the conjugate from 3.5 × 10⁴ to 3 × 10⁵, and temperature from 10 to 30°C. The logarithm of 〈ρ〉 increased approximately linearly with increasing polymer concentration. This increase in 〈ρ〉, amounting to a factor of 20 times, was less marked than that in macroscopic viscosity. At concentrations less than 30%, 〈ρ〉 depended appreciably on the molecular weight of the conjugate.     

Asymmetric conjugate reduction of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and esters with chiral rhodium(2,6-bisoxazolinylphenyl) catalysts

New asymmetric conjugate reduction of beta,beta-disubstituted alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and esters was accomplished with alkoxylhydrosilanes in the presence of chiral rhodium(2,6-bisoxazolinylphenyl) complexes in high yields and high enantioselectivity. (E)-4-Phenyl-3-penten-2-one and (E)-4-phenyl-4-isopropyl-3-penten-2-one were readily reduced at 60 degrees C in 95 % ee and 98 % ee, respectively, by 1 mol % of catalyst loading. (EtO)2MeSiH proved to be the best hydrogen donor of choice. tert-Butyl (E)-beta-methylcinnamate and beta-isopropylcinnamate could also be reduced to the corresponding dihydrocinnamate derivatives up to 98 % ee.     

Disubstituted 1,6-methano[10]annulene derivatives for use in organic light-emitting diodes

Bis(carbazolylphenyl) and bis(diphenylaminophenyl) derivatives of 1,6-methano[10]annulene, which is luminescent material and contains seven-membered rings, are synthesized. The bis(phenylcarbazole) derivative 3 have high melting point and glass transition temperature. Electroluminescence characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes using these methano[10]annulenes were investigated.     

Novel excited quintet state in porphyrin: bis(quinoline-TEMPO)-yttrium-tetraphenylporphine complex

New mono- and bis[4-(3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-quinolinoyloxy)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl](meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato)yttrium(III) complexes have been synthesized, and the properties of the excited states generated by photoexcitation of porphyrin were studied by time-resolved (TR) and pulsed two-dimensional electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. A TR-EPR spectrum was observed in the quartet (S=3/2) or quintet (S=2) states generated from interactions of one or two radicals with the photoexcited triplet state of the porphyrin. The zero-field splitting D values of these states were analyzed in terms of those of the triplet and the radical-triplet pair. The spin states of the excited states were definitely assigned by measuring the mutation frequencies with pulsed EPR.     

A generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem for the one-dimensional diffusion process

The [, , ]-Langevin equation describes the time evolution of a real stationary process withT-positivity (reflection positivity) originating in the axiomatic quantum field theory. For this [, , ]-Langevin equation a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem is proved. We shall obtain, as its application, a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem for the one-dimensional non-linear diffusion process, which presents one solution of Ryogo Kubo's problem in physics.     

Synthesis of N,N,N′,N′-tetrasubstituted 1,3-bis(4-aminophenyl)azulenes and their application to a hole-injecting material in organic electroluminescent devices

After a preliminary search of the reaction conditions for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of haloazulenes with arylboronic acids, the title compounds were synthesized either by the direct coupling reaction between 1,3-dihaloazulene and the corresponding N,N-disubstituted 4-aminophenylboronic acids or by a two-step sequence involving the cross-coupling with 4-bromophenylboronic acid and subsequent Pd-catalyzed amination. Application of the title diamines to a hole-injecting material in organic electroluminescent devices was carried out to provide their prominent characteristics as a novel durable, non-cyanine and non-polyamine substance without color fade. The diamine derivatives, extended by an ethynyl unit between the azulenyl core and the 4-aminophenyl moiety, were also synthesized and found, unfortunately, unsuitable for vacuum deposition in preparing a multilayer composite.
