Facile Synthesis of Novel Pentofuranose Analogs of Phospha Sugar Derivatives

Novel pentofuranose analogs of phospha sugar derivatives were synthesized starting from 1-phenyl-2-phospholene 1-oxide ( 1 ). First, the allylic oxidation of 1-phenyl-2-phospholene 1-oxide ( 1 ) with CrO 3 in Ac 2 O-AcOH or 3-hydroxy-1-phenyl-2-phospholene ( 2 ) with MnO 2 afforded 1-phenyl-4-oxo-2-phospholene 1-oxide ( 3 ). The C-5 alkylation of 3 in the presence of NaH by using benzyl bromide or methyl iodide as electrophiles afforded the target title compounds.     

Preparation of Ring and Chain Condensed Oligophosphates

Preparations of small-ring and short-chain condensed phosphates were made by dry and wet processes, respectively. The crystallization of tetra- hexa-, and octaphosphates from the phosphate solution was not easy, and metal salts of these oligophosphates were amorphous and unstable at normal temperature. Guanidine tetraphosphate and ammonium hexaphosphate were crystalline and stable at normal temperature.     

Microwave-Accelerated Selective Acylation of (Hydroxyalkyl)phenols Using Acid Chlorides

Highly selective acylation of the alcoholic hydroxy group can be achieved with (hydroxyalkyl)phenols carrying both alcoholic and phenolic hydroxyls by the use of the most common acylating agents, acid chlorides, under microwave irradiation.     

Synthesis of Optically Active Aromatic Ether Ketone Macrocycles Containing 2,2′-Dimethoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl-6,6′-diyl Moieties

Optically active aromatic ether ketone macrocycles containing 2,2′-dimethoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl-6,6′-diyl moieties were synthesized through electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction and stepwise nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions. Structures of the resulting macrocycles were confirmed by NMR and matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass measurements.     

Spectroscopic and thermodynamic studies of binary mixtures composed of nematogenic and non-nematogenic components

The effect of a non-nematic guest, tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), on the liquid-crystaline state of the host, 4-n-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), has been investigated. It was shown by absorption spectroscopy that TCNE forms a 1 : 1 charge transfer complex with 5CB in the nematic phase, similar to that in the isotropic solution. The effect of TCNE on the transition temperature was investigated by comparison with a normal guest, 2,3-dimethylbutane (DMB), which has a molecular volume comparable with that of TCNE but has no specific interaction with the host. TCNE was found to lower the transition temperature much more strikingly than DMB, suggesting the peculiar effect of complex formation. The theoretical background is given based on molecular field theory.     

Ni‐Catalyzed [4+3+2] Cycloaddition of Ethyl Cyclopropylideneacetate and Dienynes: Scope and Mechanistic Insights

A detailed study of the Ni‐catalyzed [4+3+2] cycloaddition reaction between ethyl cyclopropylideneacetate and dienynes has been conducted, resulting in the development of a new method for the synthesis of compounds containing nine‐membered rings. We studied the reactivity of various dienynes, together with their substituent and conformational effects. The mechanism of the reaction was probed by examining the stoichiometric reactions of the Ni complexes and dienynes.
