Kinetic study of radical polymerization of dialkyl fumarates using electron spin resonance spectroscopy

The radical polymerization of dialkyl fumarates (DRF) bearing various ester alkyl groups was kinetically studied. The propagation and termination rate constants were determined using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The introduction of the bulky ester alkyl groups such as a tert-butyl group decreased the termination rate constant as expected. However, it has also been revealed that the bulky groups promote propagation despite the steric repulsion. The propagation rate and mechanism are discussed in relation to the propagation manner, i.e., tacticity of the polymer. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Stabilization of High‐Valence Ruthenium with Silicotungstate Ligands: Preparation,Structural Characterization,and Redox Studies of Ruthenium(III)‐Substituted α‐Keggin‐Type Silicotungstates with Pyridine Ligands, [SiW11O39RuIII(Py)]5−

Ruthenium(III)‐substituted α‐Keggin‐type silicotungstates with pyridine‐based ligands, [SiW₁₁O₃₉Ru^III(Py)]^5?, (Py: pyridine ( 1 ), 4‐pyridine‐carboxylic acid ( 2 ), 4,4′‐bipyridine ( 3 ), 4‐pyridine‐acetamide ( 4 ), and 4‐pyridine‐methanol ( 5 )) were prepared by reacting [SiW₁₁O₃₉Ru^III(H₂O)]^5? with the pyridine derivatives in water at 80 °C and then isolated as their hydrated cesium salts. These compounds were characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV), UV/Vis, IR, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, titration, and X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure (XANES) analysis (Ru K‐edge and L₃‐edge). Single‐crystal X‐ray analysis of compounds 2 , 3 , and 4 revealed that Ru^III was incorporated in the α‐Keggin framework and was coordinated by pyridine derivatives through a Ru? N bond. In the solid state, compounds 2 and 3 formed a dimer through π? π interaction of the pyridine moieties, whereas they existed as monomers in solution. CV indicated that the incorporated Ru^III–Py was reversibly oxidized into the Ru^IV–Py derivative and reduced into the Ru^II–Py derivative.     

Two-neutron transfer reactions on nuclei in the transitional region

The possibility of coexistence of spherical and deformed states in samarium isotopes is explored by analyzing the experimental data of the two-neutron transfer reactions, and the moment of mixing of the coexisting states and their deformation parameters are determined.     

Cinemicrophotographic study of boiling of water-in-oil emulsions

Cinemicrophotography is applied to the boiling of emulsions of water dispersed in oils whose boiling points are higher than that of water. The layer of emulsion is made thin enough to make possible a microscopic observation by transmitted light through the layer. Two alternative processes of bubble formation are found: a periodical bubble formation at specified sites on the heated solid surface contacting the emulsion and a casual bubble formation some distance away from the surface. The basic mechanisms of those processes are discussed.     

Preparation and properties of anionic transition metal complexes containing triheterocarbenium ions

Summary Thermally stable anionic tetracarbonylcobalt complexes containing triheterocarbenium ions, [Co(CO)₄]^–[cation]⁺, have been synthesized by the ion exchange reaction of [Co(CO)₄]^–PPN⁺ with the corresponding carbenium ions. Similar molybdenum complexes containing cyclopentadienyl and carbonyl ligands were also prepared. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses and by i.r. and n.m.r. spectroscopies. The ionic structures of the complexes are confirmed on the basis of their large electric conductivities.     

Observation of "partial coherence" in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with a quantum dot

We report experiments on the interference through spin states of electrons in a quantum dot (QD) embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. We have picked up a spin-pair state, for which the environmental conditions are ideally similar. The AB amplitude is traced in a range of gate voltage that covers the pair. The behavior of the asymmetry in the amplitude around the two Coulomb peaks agrees with the theoretical prediction that the spin-flip process in a QD is related to the quantum dephasing of electrons. These results constitute evidence of "partial coherence" due to an entanglement of spins in the QD and in the interferometer.     

Nonameric porphyrin assemblies--formation and intra-assembly energy transfer reactions

The nonameric porphyrin assemblies constructed with the series of free base tetraphenylporphyrins Pn having four pyrazine moieties linked with alkyl chains of different lengths, (CH2)n (n = 1, 5, 9, 17, 30), and dimeric [meso-tetrakis(2-carboxy-4-nonylphenyl)porphyrinato]zinc(II), ZnP2, show the effective light-collection effect and the typical Forster-type energy transfer from ZnP2 to Pn.
