Application of pattern recognition to structure-activity problems: Use of minimal spanning tree

A graph-theoretical algorithm based on the minimal spanning tree (MST) is applied to structure—activity problems. The method is helpful in interpreting the results of cluster analysis, and becomes useful by combining with the mapping method that illustrates approximations of a multidimensional data structure. The antibacterial spectra of cephalosporins are analyzed by the MST approach and a linear mapping method. The main diameter obtained by MST gives the representative data set and clarifies the substituent effect on the antibacterial spectra. Relations between the central nervous system activity of benzodiazepine derivatives and their physicochemical parameters are also analyzed by MST and nonlinear mapping methods. These results for cephalosporins and benzodiazepines prove that MST is very useful in understanding the position of compounds in feature space and their activities.     

Structures and fusion parameters of methoxycarbonyl-benzenes and -naphthalenes

The heats of fusion of methoxycarbonyl-benzenes (12 isomers) and -naphthalenes (32 isomers) have been determined by the differential scanning calorimetric method and the correlation of numbers and positions of methoxycarbonyl groups against the parameters of fusion (melting point, enthalpy and entropy) are discussed. The enthalpy—entropy relationship shows two correlation lines depending on the symmetry of the molecules including the positions of the substituents.     

Cinemicrophotographic study of boiling of water-in-oil emulsions

Cinemicrophotography is applied to the boiling of emulsions of water dispersed in oils whose boiling points are higher than that of water. The layer of emulsion is made thin enough to make possible a microscopic observation by transmitted light through the layer. Two alternative processes of bubble formation are found: a periodical bubble formation at specified sites on the heated solid surface contacting the emulsion and a casual bubble formation some distance away from the surface. The basic mechanisms of those processes are discussed.     

Charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase from a monoclinic single domain of NaV2O5 uniquely determined by resonant x-ray scattering

The present resonant x-ray scattering has been performed on a monoclinically split single domain of NaV(2)O(5). The observation of a critically enhanced contrast between V(4+) and V(5+) ions has led us to the unequivocal conclusion of the charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase of NaV(2)O(5) below T(c) = 35 K. In spite of the possible four types of configuration of the zigzag-type charge-order patterns in the ab plane (A,A',B and B'), the stacking sequence along the c axis is determined as the AAA'A' type by comparison with model calculations.     

Computation of multiple eigenvalues of infinite tridiagonal matrices

In this paper, it is first given as a necessary and sufficient condition that infinite matrices of a certain type have double eigenvalues. The computation of such double eigenvalues is enabled by the Newton method of two variables. The three-term recurrence relations obtained from its eigenvalue problem (EVP) subsume the well-known relations of (A) the zeros of ; (B) the zeros of ; (C) the EVP of the Mathieu differential equation; and (D) the EVP of the spheroidal wave equation. The results of experiments are shown for the three cases (A)-(C) for the computation of their ``double pairs'.

     

Electrolytic synthesis of ammonia in molten salts under atmospheric pressure

Ammonia was successfully synthesized by using a new electrochemical reaction with high current efficiency at atmospheric pressure and at lower temperatures than the Haber-Bosch process. In this method, nitride ion (N3-), which is produced by the reduction from nitrogen gas at the cathode, is anodically oxidized and reacts with hydrogen to produce ammonia at the anode.     

Reliability tests for Weibull distribution with variational shape parameter based on sudden death lifetime data

In the traditional design of reliability tests for assuring the mean time to failure (MTTF) in Weibull distribution with shape and scale parameters, it has been assumed that the shape parameter in the acceptable and rejectable populations is the same fixed number. For the purpose of expanding applicability of the reliability testing, Hisada and Arizono have developed a reliability sampling scheme for assuring MTTF in the Weibull distribution under the conditions that shape parameters in the both populations do not necessarily coincide, and are specified as interval values, respectively. Then, their reliability test is designed using the complete lifetime data. In general, the reliability testing based on the complete lifetime data requires the long testing time. As a consequence, the testing cost becomes sometimes expensive. In this paper, for the purpose of an economical plan of the reliability test, we consider the sudden death procedure for assuring MTTF in Weibull distribution with variational shape parameter.     

Adsorption behavior of VII group elements on tertiary pyridine resin in hydrochloric acid solution

We investigated the adsorption behaviors of technetium and rhenium on tertiary pyridine resin in hydrochloric acid solution. Technetium has a little larger distribution coefficient in higher concentration of hydrochloric acid region than rhenium. However, the tendency of adsorption behavior of technetium and rhenium is similar. We concluded that the rhenium can be used as the substitute for technetium. Adsorption behaviors of platinum group elements were also investigated. The separation of technetium from platinum group elements is discussed.     

广义增量法在三维扁平桁架结构的弹塑性屈曲分析中的应用

本文利用广义逆矩阵,提出了解决非线性屈曲问题的广义增量法。并用该法分析了非线性荷载-位移关系曲线(其中包括极值点)。最后,给出一数值算例—三维扁平桁架结构的弹塑性屈曲分析,证明了本文方法的正确性和实用性。
