An abrupt spin transition based on short S...S contacts in a novel Fe(II) complex whose ligand contains a 1,3-dithiole ring

The first preparation of an Fe(II) spin-crossover complex including a 1,3-dithiole ligand is reported. Crystal analyses of both the low- and the high-temperature phases reveal that short S...S contacts play a key role in an abrupt spin transition.     

High enrichment method for the determination of ultra-trace levels of cobalt by liquid—liquid extraction using water/oil/water emulsions as liquid surfactant membranes

A high preconcentration method for the determination of cobalt by graphie furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using liquid surfactant membranes was developed. Droplets of dilute hydrochloric acid in kerosene containing 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester emulsion coated with sorbitan monooleate are dispersed in an aqueous sample solution. Cobalt(II) diffuses through the liquid membrane to form the complex with the ester and the analyte ion is extracted successively into the inner acidic aqueous phase. A 550-fold enrichment of cobalt(II) and a detection limit of 10 pg ml^?1 are achieved.     

Two-step purification of cytochrome P-450 from rat liver microsomes using high-performance liquid chromatography

Cytochrome P-450 from rat liver microsomes treated with phenobarbital (PB) was separated into six fractions, as was cytochrome P-450 treated with 3-methylcholanthrene (MC), by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with an anion-exchange column. PB and MC induced three forms and one form of cytochrome P-450, respectively. The major forms induced by PB and by MC were further purified to apparent homogeneity based on sodium dodecyl(lauryl)sulphate--polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis by HPLC using a hydroxyapatite column. These new HPLC techniques are simple, rapid and useful for the purification of major forms of cytochrome P-450 from solubilized microsomes.     

Soft-core model for ionic crystals normal ionic salts and superionic conductors

Soft-core potentials are assumed for the pair interactions between ions, and with the Lennard-Jones and Devonshire cell theory, the conditions for the occurrence of sublattice melting as a transition from the normal crystalline to the super-ionic phase are obtained.     

Structural Phase Transitions of Aliphatic Nylons Viewed from the Simultaneous Measurements of WAXD and SAXS

Structural changes occurring in the high temperature region of doubly-oriented nylon 10/10 sample have been investigated through the temperature-dependent simultaneous measurements of wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scatterings, and the results were compared with the infrared spectral data as well as the molecular dynamics simulation results. In the Brill transition region of 150–180 °C the methylene segments are conformationally disordered with keeping the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. During this phase transition the stacked lamellar structure did not change very much: the lamellae are tilted by ca. 34° from the draw axis and the long period is almost 160 Å. In the temperature region immediately below the melting point the molecular chains were found to be contracted by ca. 10% the original repeating period and the intermolecular hydrogen bonds were almost broken, causing the violent rotational and translational motions of the chains around the chain axis. At the same time the long period increased remarkably from 160 Å to 410 Å and the originally tilted lamellae stood up in parallel to the draw axis.
